SUMMARY:Trees for a Changing Climate
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the annual Haverford College Arboretum\, Hardy Plant Society\, and Henry Botanic Garden Lecture\, presented by George Coombs.\n\n\nAs trees face increasing threats from climate change and novel pests and diseases\, it is essential to adapt our practices to protect and sustain our landscapes. Join the Mt. Cuba Center’s director of horticulture for an insightful discussion on strategies to safeguard their garden’s tree canopy. George Coombs will explain their strategic approach to choosing resilient species\, including the models and thought processes behind it\, their list of recommendations\, and the methods that will be used to track tree resilience over the coming decades. \n \nThis event is a partnership sponsored by Haverford College Arboretum\, the Hardy Plant Society\, and Henry Botanic Garden. At 2:00 p.m. there will be a free campus tour given by Haverford College Arboretum horticulturists. This lecture will take place in Sharpless Hall at Haverford College Arboretum and will be accompanied by light refreshments. \n \nSpeaker Biography: George Coombs is the director of horticulture at Mt. Cuba Center\, where he guides the care and development of one of the preeminent native plant gardens in America. To date\, his efforts have focused on making Mt. Cuba’s gardens more accessible to a growing number of guests and ensuring the long-term resilience of the garden. Prior to his current role\, George managed Mt. Cuba’s trial program\, publishing several research reports and helping bring new cultivars of native plants to market.

SUMMARY:Lost Forests
DESCRIPTION:Join Jonathan Wilson (Edward Drinker Cope Professor of Environmental Biology) to learn about the extinct plants of the high latitudes.\n\n\nLost Forests: Reconstructing the Extinct and Extreme Plants of the High Latitudes \nPolar environments present unique physical challenges for plants\, including endless nights in winter and continuous days in summer\, coupled with temperature\, wind\, and other stresses. However\, for the last three hundred million years\, there have been periods where trees and forests have grown at latitudes far beyond any tree on Earth today. How did they cope? In this talk\, I will discuss recent and ongoing research on fossil forests from near the poles—including Svalbard\, the Falkland Islands\, and Antarctica—and what they tell us about plant evolution and past environments. \n \nJonathan Paul Wilson is a paleobotanist and the Edward Drinker Cope Professor of Environmental Biology at Haverford College. He uses mathematical models to study the biophysical properties of extinct plants and employs these values in paleoclimatic and paleoecosystem simulations. For more information: Jonathan Wilson’s Biography. \n \nPhoto Caption: Growth rings in a cross-section of conifer wood (Protocedroxylon araucarioides) from Mesozoic Era strata in the Svalbard Archipelago \nParking for this event is in the Visitor’s Lot\, the talks location will be in Lutnick 200.

SUMMARY:Arbor Day Tree Planting
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Arbor Day with the Arboretum!\n\n\nThe Arboretum has a longstanding tradition of planting trees on Arbor Day. First observed at Haverford on April 4\, 1902\, representatives of the Pennsylvania Forestry Association came out to the campus to celebrate the holiday. It became such a popular celebration that in the early 1900s\, a song was arranged by J. H. Redfield\, Class of 1899\, and published by Hums and Noble. Over the years\, the Arboretum has planted hundreds of trees in honor of this special day. \nThis year\, our guest speaker will be our student workers. The location of the tree planting is behind VCAM. Members of Haverford College Arboretum will be able to take home their membership perk of a dividend plant during this event. Parking for off-campus community members can be found in the visitor parking lot.

SUMMARY:Bad Naturalist | Author Visit - Paula Whyman
DESCRIPTION:Paula Whyman author of Bad Naturalist is coming to campus!\n\n\nWhen Paula Whyman first climbs a peak in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in search of a home in the country\, she has no idea how quickly her tidy backyard ecology project will become a massive endeavor. She soon discovers just how much she has to learn about hands-on conservation work. Bad Naturalist is a memoir about Paula Whyman’s attempts to restore native meadows on a 200-acre mountaintop–about the obstacles she encountered\, the mistakes she made\, the failures and the all-important successes\, and the discoveries she made along the way. Douglas Tallamy calls Bad Naturalist “self-deprecating\, humorous\, and thoroughly engaging.” Washington Gardener calls it “glorious.”Whyman will share the story of her efforts to restore the land\, and she’ll answer audience questions. \nThis event will take place in VCAM 001. Her talk will be followed by a book signing. Copies of the book will be available for sale at the event in collaboration with Narberth Bookshop. \nNarberth Bookshop Information \nCurrent Hours: Sun – Mon: Noon – 5\, Tues – Sat: 11 – 7 \nNARBERTH BOOKSHOPA COMMUNITY OF READERS\, WRITERS\, AND LIFELONG LEARNERS \n221 Haverford Ave. Narberth\, PA 19072 610-664-1112 \nnarberthbookshop@gmail.com \nwww.narberthbookshop.com \nProud member of iNDiE MAiN LiNE! \n\n\n\nPaula Whyman Bio \nPaula Whyman is the author of Bad Naturalist and a finalist for the Philip D.
