SUMMARY:Bad Naturalist | Author Visit - Paula Whyman
DESCRIPTION:Paula Whyman author of Bad Naturalist is coming to campus!\n\n\nWhen Paula Whyman first climbs a peak in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in search of a home in the country\, she has no idea how quickly her tidy backyard ecology project will become a massive endeavor. She soon discovers just how much she has to learn about hands-on conservation work. Bad Naturalist is a memoir about Paula Whyman’s attempts to restore native meadows on a 200-acre mountaintop–about the obstacles she encountered\, the mistakes she made\, the failures and the all-important successes\, and the discoveries she made along the way. Douglas Tallamy calls Bad Naturalist “self-deprecating\, humorous\, and thoroughly engaging.” Washington Gardener calls it “glorious.”Whyman will share the story of her efforts to restore the land\, and she’ll answer audience questions. \nThis event will take place in VCAM 001. Her talk will be followed by a book signing. Copies of the book will be available for sale at the event in collaboration with Narberth Bookshop. \nNarberth Bookshop Information \nCurrent Hours: Sun – Mon: Noon – 5\, Tues – Sat: 11 – 7 \nNARBERTH BOOKSHOPA COMMUNITY OF READERS\, WRITERS\, AND LIFELONG LEARNERS \n221 Haverford Ave. Narberth\, PA 19072 610-664-1112 \nnarberthbookshop@gmail.com \nwww.narberthbookshop.com \nProud member of iNDiE MAiN LiNE! \n\n\n\nPaula Whyman Bio \nPaula Whyman is the author of Bad Naturalist and a finalist for the Philip D. SUMMARY:Making Stormwater Come Alive
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the annual Haverford College Arboretum\, Hardy Plant Society\, and Henry Botanic Garden Lecture\, presented by Lucy Dinsmore.\n\n\nGrading and piping may not get you excited\, but plants probably do. They are the reason green stormwater infrastructure works\, and the plant palette is expansive. This talk will look at inspiration from public gardens and private spaces\, and also show real-life solutions to landscape problems. With extreme storm events on the rise\, we can manage the effects with functional gardens. Let’s rethink our gardens and dig deeper—literally\, dig into the land to make space for water. \n \nThis event is a partnership sponsored by Haverford College Arboretum\, the Hardy Plant Society\, and Henry Botanic Garden. At 2:00 p.m. there will be a free campus tour given by Haverford College Arboretum horticulturists featuring our rain gardens. This lecture will take place in Sharpless Hall at Haverford College Arboretum and will be accompanied by light refreshments. \n\, \nSpeaker Biography: Lucy Dinsmore owns and operates Plant Lady Lucy LLC\, a design/build company specializing in native plants and stormwater solutions in PA and DE. She’s an ISA-certified arborist (International Society of Arboriculture) and was a staff horticulturist for nine years at the Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania. Lucy is also the program manager for Catch the Rain\, a rebate program in the White Clay Watershed that provides technical and financial assistance to homeowners wishing to implement green stormwater projects.
