This workshop welcomes people from traditionally marginalized identities to experience and enjoy nature through birding. No experience is necessary! Learn to identify local bird species using the binoculars and field guides provided. \nThis program is part of Yannick Lowery’s ongoing project as Artist in Residence. His work reimagines Glen Foerd as a site of leisure instead of labor by highlighting the experiences of workers throughout the site’s history. Through programs like this\, he invites the public into his research. \nThis workshop is free to attend. Please register in advance. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTroy Bynum\, owner of TB Wildlife Photography LLC\, is not only an enthusiastic birder but also a passionate wildlife photographer from Philadelphia\, PA. Troy’s work focuses on capturing and showcasing the remarkable colors\, intricate patterns\, and rich textures that are abundant throughout the natural world. His work has beenpublished by Discovery Warner Bros.\, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology\, Grid Magazine\, Northern Virginia Bird Alliance\, The Chestnut Hill Local\, and other regional publications. \nTroy is also an avid birder and experienced guide\, leading regional and international birding tours with Hillstar Nature\, Delmarva Birding Weekends\, DC Bird Alliance\, Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay\, and TB Wildlife Photography LLC to name a few organizations. Troy also volunteers as Field Trip Chair for Liberty Bird Alliance where he coordinates and often leads domestic and international birding trips for the members. He currently lives in Montgomery County with his wife and daughter and loves spending his free time with them birding\, hiking\, biking\, or playing bird-themed board games.

SUMMARY:Birdwatch Kayak Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided kayak tour focused on the birds of the Poquessing Creek and Delaware River. We will be joined by Bria\, Senior Coordinator of Audubon Mid-Atlantic at the Discovery Center\, who will teach us about the birds we encounter out on the water. Bria will also cover the use of digital tools to identify what we see and hear\, so you will leave with a better handle on how to identify birds out in the wild! \nPlease bring your own binoculars to the event! Note that the Free Library of Philadelphia offers birding backpacks (including binoculars) for loan at multiple locations. \nWe will mostly paddle in tandem (two-person) kayaks\, so if you arrive solo\, you may get paired with a new friend. This activity is open to all ages 12+\, and minors must be accompanied by an adult. \nPlease reach out to Colleen at cwinslow@glenfoerd.org if the cost of this event is prohibitive. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearn more\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFYI: Be prepared for summer temperatures and moderate physical exertion. Getting in and out of your boat can be a wet and muddy experience\, so wear appropriate clothing and consider bringing something to change into after the activity. DESCRIPTION:Last chance to see some wintering gulls in Philly!\n\n\nGlen Foerd mansion sits along the Delaware River in the northeastern-most corner of Philly and is one of the best places in the city to study gulls during the winter. While there is no guarantee\, we are hoping to see a rare gull such as Iceland or Glaucous Gull. There should also be a good amount of waterfowl out on the river and we can discuss how to distinguish Double-crested Cormorants from the Great Cormorants that visit the area in winter.  \nWe plan this as a stationary event overlooking the river\, but if folks want\, we can also explore the parkland surrounding the mansion. Please dress according to the expected weather. We will meet at 10.30 am at the flagpole along the river. Folks can join at any point during the event.  \nThere is limited parking on-site and along the surrounding roads so please share a ride if you can. The location is also reachable by bus lines 19 and 84. The Torresdale regional rail station is a 15 min walk away.  \nNo binoculars? No worries! SUMMARY:Mudlarking with Cory Kram
DESCRIPTION:Mudlarking is the act of looking for discarded remnants along creeks and riverbanks during low tide. In this workshop\, former Glen Foerd Artist in Residence Cory Kram will lead participants to the Poquessing Creek (a former dumping ground in the early 1900s) for a treasure hunt! \nAntique bottles\, ceramic shards\, buttons\, marbles\, and bottle-stoppers are just some of the many objects that visitors may find in the creek. Participants will collect these objects\, wash them\, and take them home as souvenirs. A corresponding creek clean-up will occur during the mudlarking. Let’s see what we can find! \nParticipants should dress in warm clothes and wear study shoes/boots. Note that the ground will be relatively solid due to the cold\, but feel free to bring a backup pair of shoes to change into. This event offers a choice between a guided walk with naturalist Mike Weilbacher\, a yin-style yoga class with Melissa Gyuraki\, and creative crafts for the whole family brought to you by our very own Lily P.A.D.S educators. Please dress warmly for this excursion. \nYin-style Yoga in the Mansion with Melissa Gyuraki: Join us for a calming yoga practice that honors rest and reflection with just a touch of inner heat as we move into winter and welcome the return of sunlight. Join JJ Tiziou and walk leaders for a day-long walk along to Northeast border of Philadelphia beginning with coffee and donuts at Glen Foerd. \nThe group will be leaving from Glen Foerd at 8:30am and walking north towards Somerton. \nSegments are estimated to take roughly 12-15 miles and 6-8 hours. DESCRIPTION:Make your own paper out of recycled cotton rag and foraged plant inclusions! Join teaching artists from the Paper Think Tank and transform cotton rag pulp into beautiful sheets of paper. \nThe workshop will begin with an introduction\, historical overview of hand papermaking in Philadelphia and a brief demo. From there\, participants can make a variety of handmade papers using the prepared pulp and extra materials foraged around Glen Foerd. This workshop is suitable for all skill levels. \nThis workshop will be held outside at the Glen Foerd Carriage House at the end of the driveway. In the case of inclement weather\, the workshop will be held inside the Carriage House. \nFor questions about this event\, please contact us. \nPaper Think Tank is a community accessible hand papermaking studio\, housed in Brandywine Workshop and Archives in Philadelphia\, dedicated to making paper\, collaborating with artists\, and growing the paper\, print\, and book arts communities of the city. \nPaper Think Tank produces sustainable and local handmade paper and books using invasive plants and renewable resources. This is a unique opportunity as our usual tours remain on the PA side of the river. \nOnce we arrive on the Island\, you’ll have the freedom to explore at your own pace—stroll along the nature trails\, relax on the beach or paddle around the island’s peaceful coves. \nLunch will be provided by Glen Foerd to keep you fueled for the adventure. \n Participants will be in tandem kayaks and paddling with another participant. General admission for this Fundraiser is $75 per person. Please consider selecting a $100 or $125 donation ticket to further support our environmental programs. \nFundraisers like this one\, along with generous community support\, help us keep many of our programs free or low-cost. Your contributions make it possible for us to welcome a diverse range of visitors and ensure that this beautiful estate—and the natural environment that surrounds it—remains accessible to all. \n**Please be advised\, river currents and tide changes can make this a difficult experience for some. This event is designed for participants who possess the ability to paddle for an extended period in open water. DESCRIPTION:Join us at Glen Foerd for open boating! We’ll have canoes\, rowboats\, and kayaks for guests to explore parts of the Poquessing Creek and Delaware River. This activity is open to all ages\, though be prepared for summer temperatures and moderate physical exertion. Minors must be accompanied by an adult. Getting in and out of your boat can be a wet and muddy experience. Please wear appropriate clothing and consider bringing something to change into after the activity. Don’t forget your water\, snacks\, and sunscreen! \nThis is a walk-up\, first-come\, first-served event. Boat space is limited. Glen Foerd staff will do our best to ensure as many people get out on the water as possible\, but we can not make any guarantees. \n The meeting point for this event will be behind the Carriage House.
