SUMMARY:Greenhouse Yoga at the Horticulture Center
DESCRIPTION:Connect with others and your practice in the lush greenhouse setting!\n\n\n\nLOCATION\nFairmount Park Horticulture Center \n  \n\n\n\nFairmount Park Conservancy is thrilled to announce the much-anticipated return of Greenhouse Yoga at the Fairmount Park Horticulture Center on select dates throughout the winter. \nEscape the winter blues and connect with your practice in the lush\, tropical setting of the Horticulture Center’s greenhouse. These all-level classes take place on select Sundays and will be led by a rotation of experienced teachers from Tula Yoga. \nABOUT THE HORTICULTURE CENTER: The Horticulture Center in West Fairmount Park\, a modern exhibition hall and greenhouse\, was built for the Bicentennial Celebration in 1976. It sits on the site of the former Horticultural Hall\, a 1876 Centennial Exposition building. Within its walls are a visitor center and greenhouse where one can see many tropical plants and a fine collection of statues interspersed in the greenery. To learn more about the Horticulture Center\, you can visit their Instagram page. \nTICKET PRICE: $15 \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO: \n\nPlease bring your own yoga mat. The floor of the Horticulture Center is similar to an outdoor surface. You may want to bring something to place under your yoga mat (both for padding and to keep your yoga mat clean) or be prepared to clean your yoga mat after the class because it will get a little dirty.\nBring your own water and snack.\nThere are bathrooms available inside the Horticulture Center.\nAppropriate for adults and mature adolescents (minors must be ticketed and accompanied by a guardian).\nDue to the large size of the class\, we recommend yogis have at least one yoga class under their belt.\nThe temperature in the greenhouse can get fairly warm. We recommend wearing a t-shirt or tank top underneath winter layers.\nParking is available in the lot across from the Horticulture Center. Please do not leave valuables in your car!\nThere are two yoga classes being offered on each date – one from 10-11 AM and another from 11:15 AM-12:15 PM. The classes will be identical and led by the same instructor so we suggest only signing up for one each day. If attending the second class\, please note that you will not be able to enter the greenhouse until participants from the first class have left.\nParks and Rec staff are now locking the north entry gate behind the Please Touch Museum. The ONLY entrance available is the south entry off of Montgomery Drive.\nImportant pre-event information and any event updates are sent out via email. Please make sure the email address entered is correct and that you check it before coming out to the event.\n\n  \n\nPARKING/GETTING THERE: There is plenty of free parking in the lot across from the Fairmount Park Horticulture Center. As always\, never leave valuables in your car! PLEASE NOTE: if there’s no other event happening\, the Parks and Rec staff may close and lock the entry gate after class. We don’t recommend leaving your car in the lot after class has ended. If traveling by public transit\, the nearest stop is at Belmont Ave and South Georges Hill Drive – a half-mile walk from the start. The closest Indego bike station is at Parkside and Belmont Ave\, Case Building – one mile from the start.\n\n\nQUESTIONS? Please reach out to programs@myphillypark.org

SUMMARY:Little Sit: Accessible for All Birdwatching
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an inclusive birding event that celebrates diversity and birdability! \n\n\nDATE\nSunday\, October 22\, 2023 \n\n\n\nTIME\n8:00am – 11:00am \n\n\n\nLOCATION\nFairmount Park Horticulture Center\n100 N. Horticulture Dr.\nPhiladelphia\, PA 19131 \n\n\n\nFairmount Park Conservancy is thrilled to partner with In Color Birding Club\, Feminist Bird Club Philly\, Pennsylvania Center for Adapted Sports (PCAS)\, and Philly Queer Birders for a special morning of birding on October 22 from 8:00–11:00 AM. This event is intentionally accessible to BIPOC\, the LGBTQ+ community\, and those with disabilities. \nBirders seek out diversity in birds\, looking for an array of colors\, sizes\, ages\, origins\, etc. Thankfully\, there’s a movement underway among birders to similarly celebrate diversity in our fellow humans. All are welcome! We encourage people with all skill levels to attend (even if you have never been birding). \nHalloween costumes are welcome! You’re welcome to show up at any time between 8:00–11:00 AM and stay for as long or as short as you want. We’ll have a few light snacks and encourage people to bring outside chairs\, picnic blankets\, or anything that will make you comfortable spending a morning birding in one location (rather than walking). We’ll have name tags where you can write your name and pronouns if you want so you can easily meet other birding friends. After all\, birds of a feather flock together! \nAccessibility notes are listed in the ‘Know Before You Go’ and ‘Parking/Getting There’ sections below; however\, if you have any other questions\, requests\, or needs\, please reach out to programs@myphillypark.org. \nWHAT IS A “LITTLE SIT”? \nThe Little Sit is our answer to a typically day-long\, stationary birding event called a “big sit\,” where groups try to see as many birds in one location as possible. It’s also a departure from our normal format of taking a bird hike where a lot of terrain is covered and we go to the birds. Instead\, with the Little Sit\, we find a stationary position and let the birds come to us! \nAbout Partner Organizations \n\nIn Color Birding Club is an organization founded in 2021 to make the birding experience a positive one for BIPOC folks and their allies. This includes: organizing inclusive events\, giving back to underserved communities of color\, and inspiring youth.\nPhilly Queer Birders started in March 2021 as a way to create queer community\, learn about our feathered friends\, and explore all the great birding that Philadelphia has to offer. They typically meet up monthly and have held events at FDR Park\, John Heinz NWR\, The Woodlands\, and more.\nFeminist Bird Club was founded by Molly Adams in 2016 as a way to leverage both their passion for birds and their passion for social justice into a cohesive whole. Since then\, the Feminist Bird Club has expanded to chapters across North America and in the Netherlands.\nPennsylvania Center for Adapted Sports has been a leader in providing adapted sports to persons with disabilities for decades. Administered from its office on Boathouse Row\, PCAS currently operates 13 sport and wellness programs year-round\, with a focus on building inclusive communities with barrier-free and supportive settings.\n\n\nTICKET PRICES: This event is FREE\, but we do ask that you RSVP so we can send pre-event info. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO: \n\nCome anytime between 8:00–11:00 AM and stay as long or as short as you’d like.\nThere are ADA-accessible bathrooms inside the Horticulture Center. Enter via the ramp on the parking lot side of the building\, marked on this map.\nBYOB – as in\, please bring your own binoculars. If you don’t have any\, no problem! We will have about 35 pairs of binoculars on hand to borrow. You can also bring your own bird book or download an identification app such as Merlin.\nAppropriate for all\, including families with children! Minors must be accompanied by a guardian.\nThis is a fully outdoor event so please dress according to weather conditions.\nPlease bring your own water (drinking water is not available in the park).\nBring sunscreen and bug spray.\nFriendly dogs on a leash are welcome.\nHalloween costumes are welcome!\n\n\nPARKING/GETTING THERE: We will be located in the backside of the building. If driving in from Horticultural Drive\, there are accessible parking spaces in the front and around the back of the building. There is also plenty of parking (including accessible parking spaces) available in the large lot marked on this map. As always\, NEVER leave valuables in your car! SEPTA Bus 38 (in both directions) drops off at Belmont Avenue near the Horticulture Center\, also marked on the map. \n\nQUESTIONS? Please reach out to programs@myphillypark.org \n
