SUMMARY:Hike and Book Discussion: Bridges and Crossings
DESCRIPTION:Meeting at Crefeld Street Trailhead (8900 Crefeld St—Lavender Trail)\nDistance: 4 miles\nDifficulty Level: Moderate (some inclines and declines\, uneven surfaces)\nAudience: 18+\nParking: There is free street parking all along Crefeld. See map for details.\nRestrooms: None\nLove reading? Love hiking? Love chatting about books with other hikers? Join Trail Ambassadors Lisa Kleiman\, Jean McWilliams\, Pat Jacona for a morning hike and book discussion! Wissahickon Valley Park is dotted with bridges\, large and small! Taking inspiration from the park\, let’s read books with a bridge or crossing theme. You can find a list of books on Amazon or try some of the following suggestions:\nBridge of Sighs – Richard Russo (Oprah Book Club selection)\nBridge to Teribithia – Katherine Patterson (Children’s book)\nThe Bridge of San Luis Rey – Thornton Wilder\nThe Bridges of Madison County – Robert James Waller\nBridge over the River Kwai – Pierre Boulle\nA View from the Bridge – Arthur Miller (a play)\nThe Bridges at Toko-ri – James Michener\nThe Bridge at Andau – James Michener\nThe Crossing – Cormac McCarthy\nCaleb’s Crossing – Geraldine Brooks\nThe Crossing – Jason Mott\nCrossing to Safety – Wallace Stegner\nThe Crossing – Michael Connolly\nWe will meet at the Crefeld Street Trailhead and start our walk on the Lavender Trail\, crossing small wooden and stone bridges. Our hike will take us across Wissahickon Creek on some of the larger park bridges as well.\nWe will walk on both Forbidden Drive and the wooded trails on both sides of the creek during this 4 mile hike. If you can’t get to (or finish) a book\, come anyway! You might get a few good book recommendations\, and you will always have a chat with other FOW hikers. Dress in layers for the weather and bring along water and snacks as needed. The walk will be at a moderate pace and there will be some hills.\nRegistration is required for all events so that participants can be informed of weather or other emergency cancellations.\nUnless otherwise specified\, Trail Ambassador Walks may be on rocky\, rugged trails that may be wet and slippery. Wear sturdy shoes or boots with socks. Walks are cancelled in heavy rain or icy conditions. Service animals are always welcome. For more information contact Marisa Miller at miller@fow.org. Visit www.fow.org for updates.\nRegister below!
