SUMMARY:Relics and Ruins: West Park
DESCRIPTION:Relics and Ruins: West Park\n\nJoin us for a hike to learn about some of Fairmount Park’s historical hidden gems!\n\nDate\nSaturday\, March 21 \n\n\n\nTime\n9:00 am – 12:00 pm \n\n\n\nLocation\nBelmount Plateau Parking Lot \n1800 Belmont Mansion Drive\nPhiladelphia PA\, 19131 \n\n\n\nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy’s John Sigmund\, Director of Partnerships and Sponsorships and park history enthusiast\, for a three-mile guided hike to explore the relics and ruins of Fairmount Park. \nAs one of America’s oldest urban parks\, Fairmount Park has accumulated many layers of history – sometimes literally! A closer exploration of the landscape reveals the ruins of abandoned infrastructure and buildings that go back to the beginnings of the 178-year-old park system and occasionally\, even further. Most of the year\, nature cloaks these hidden treasures in dense growth\, but the bare woods of winter provide the perfect time to go off the beaten path. \nIf you’re fascinated by Philly history and discovering hidden treasures of the park’s past\, this hike is not to be missed! \nThis is the event page for the March 21 West Park hike; however\, there will also be an East Park hike on March 7 (more info here). Sign up for one date or for both! \nPlease note\, this hike will have some challenging sections that require agility. Since we will occasionally venture off trail\, you are encouraged to wear sturdy hiking boots and rugged outerwear that can withstand scrapes from sharp sticks and branches (please\, no fashion or formal wear! :)). \nEstimated distance: about three miles\nLevel: moderate\nTerrain: mainly hilly trails \nMarch 7: Relics & Ruins\, East Park\nSome haunting historic highlights on this tour include: the smallest surviving structure designed by Frank Furness\, two forgotten spring heads and a spooky springhouse popular in neighborhood lore\, a WPA-built bathroom\, and the hidden ruins of a colonial-era mansion that burnt down 36 years ago. Meet at Woodford Mansion. \nMarch 21: Relics & Ruins\, West Park\nWe’ll start at Belmont Plateau and touch upon a section the Trolley Trail. Next\, we’ll find the hidden remnants of rail tracks from the Philadelphia Columbia Railroad. Finally\, we’ll explore the ruins of the George’s Hill Reservoir\, taking in one of the most secret and spectacular city views. Meet at the Belmont Plateau parking lot. \nINSTRUCTOR BIO: John Sigmund is a multidisciplinary artist\, history lover\, and urban park enthusiast with years of experience as a nonprofit manager and arts educator. Born and raised in Philadelphia\, he spent a decade living in Austin\, San Antonio\, and New York City\, but made a happy homecoming to go back to school at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. John has the proud distinction of actually living in Fairmount Park– he and his partner Jaime are resident caretakers at Lemon Hill Mansion. And although Lemon Hill is his home base\, John is an enthusiastic advocate for all of the historic houses in the park system. \nTICKET PRICE: $15 \n\n\nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO: \n\nOn the ticketing page\, you can sign up for one event or for both.\nThis hike is roughly three miles over mainly hilly trails.\nAppropriate for adults and mature adolescents (minors must be ticketed and accompanied by a guardian).\nPlease dress according to weather conditions and wear good hiking shoes (boots/sneakers).\nBring water (drinking water is not available in the park) and a snack.\nUnfortunately\, there are no bathrooms along the hike route so please plan accordingly.\nWe will leave a few minutes after the scheduled start time. Please arrive at the departure location at least five minutes early. We cannot guarantee that latecomers can join after the group has departed.\nImportant pre-event information and any event updates are sent out via email. Please make sure the email address entered is correct and that you check it before coming out to the event.\n\n\nPARKING/GETTING THERE: We will meet at the Belmont Plateau parking lot across from Belmont Mansion\, overlooking the city skyline. Andrew joined the Farm Philly team in December as Urban Greening Coordinator. His past work experience and education in conservation\, ecological restoration\, and social impact strategy combined with his passion for community and urban agriculture made the position a natural fit. He brings this experience to Farm Philly where he is managing the Community Compost Network and Land Access Program. Andrew enjoys the opportunity to engage local community gardeners and urban farmers as they gain access to resources needed to support their work. \nOriginally from Harrisburg\, Andrew moved to Philly in 2010 for graduate school in Landscape Architecture/Ecological Restoration at Temple University and never left. Andrew loves trees and talking about their connection to the land and the past. He lives in Germantown with his family and their numerous pets.
