SUMMARY:Seed Jewelry Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In case of inclement weather\, this workshop will be rescheduled to 3/28. \nJoin artist Eric César Morales for an art-making workshop! Participants will learn to weave intricate jewelry with seeds harvested from around Philadelphia\, including the grounds of Bartram’s Garden\, as well as seeds collected from Latin America and the Pacific. We will learn about the historical and cultural significance of each type of seed\, including their roles in art\, music\, food\, medicine\, and folktales.  \nParticipants will design and weave their own bracelets out of seeds! All materials are provided\, and interested participants will have the chance to hand-drill a few of their own seeds. Designed for all ages and experience levels\, this workshop welcomes everyone—from children to seniors—to engage creatively with nature\, culture\, and craft!

This free series\, facilitated by Luna and organized in partnership with Family Practice and Counseling Network (FPCN)  requires no prior registration and welcomes participants of all abilities! \nPlease bring a yoga mat\, towel\, and water bottle. We’ll have extra water and a limited supply of mats on hand as well. While the class begins at 3:15\, participants are encouraged to gather and ground themselves in the space from 3-3:15pm. Classes will meet indoors in the Barn. SUMMARY:We Come from Mermaids I: African Diaspora and Water (Classroom)
DESCRIPTION:Led by Chandrika Francis of Oshun Swim School. Bartram’s Garden is partnering with Oshun Swim School this fall to offer a series of swimming and water-related workshops for Southwest Philadelphia residents. \nThis classroom-based workshop is an invitation to immerse yourself in the rich history of the African Diaspora and water!  Learn more about the ways our ancestors engaged with water for resistance and joy during slavery times and during the Middle Passage\, as well as the multitude of rich aquatic traditions in pre-European Atlantic African cultures. Through games\, conversation\, readings\, lectures\, and meditation\, we will tap into the joy\, liberation\, resistance\, and wisdom that connect us to our ancestors. \nPlease note this workshop centers the Black experience but welcomes folks of all identities. \n  \nPizza will be provided! If pizza doesn’t work for you due to dietary restrictions\, reach out to cwang@bartramsgarden.org or (215) 729-5281 x116 so we can accommodate your needs. \n  \n*COVID-19 Precautions: Class size limited to 15 students.  To increase access\, students and instructors are required to be vaccinated\, mask\, or both.
