SUMMARY:Nighthawk Night with Feminist Birding Club Philly at Awbury Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:Join Feminist Bird Club Philly on Thursday\, Sept. 10 from 6:30 – 8:00pm at Awbury Arboretum for a mostly stationary outing. Feel free to bring chairs\, blankets\, and/or a snacks! We’ll be looking for Common Nighthawks migrating at dusk as well as some other fall migrants! We’ll set up up the hill from the lower pond (near Washington Lane Regional Rail Station at 6235 Clearview St.; here’s a pin to the meet up location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/jrV3RHbtEz2dLJPm7). Stop by anytime between 6:30 – 8:00pm and stay for as long or as short as you’d like. \n\n\n\n\nWe will have extra binoculars available for anyone who needs to borrow them. Sign-up is encouraged for this event and we’ll be sending updates to people who register in the event that we need to make weather-related changes/cancellation. Please email feministbirdclub.philly@gmail.com with any questions\, or message us on instagram @fbc.philly. \n\nAt FBC Philly events\, everyone must be respectful of one another. DESCRIPTION:Friday\, August 14 | 7:30-9:30pm | The Lightning House at The Farm at Awbury  \nAs we move into late summer\, crickets\, katydids\, cicadas and grasshoppers have begun filling the night air with their rhythmic sounds. \nJoin us at dusk on Friday\, August 14th to tune into the vibrations and acoustic ecology of our local stridulators. Entomologist Joe Sweeney will introduce us to the anatomy of these ancient musicians\, as Pete Angevine\, Eugene Lew and Brooke Sietinsons guide us through a series of sonic investigations with instruments such as the clave\, and guiro that emulate cricket songs. The entire Lightning House will resonate with cricket song to live improvisation. As darkness falls we will use the technique of light trapping to attract the bugs into a special viewing. \nLight seasonal refreshments served. This event is FREE & open to all.

SUMMARY:After-School Enrichment: Intro to Archery & Wilderness Survival and Intermediate Wilderness Survival
DESCRIPTION:This fall\, Awbury’s AdventureWoods is the place to be for hands-on outdoor fun! Children ages 8–11 can join Intro to Archery & Wilderness Survival on Thursdays\, Sept 25–Oct 30\, 2025\, from 4–6 PM\, where they’ll learn the basics of archery\, try their hand at carving\, cook over a campfire\, and practice core survival skills like foraging\, knot-tying\, shelter-building\, and first aid. For older adventurers ages 11–15\, the Intermediate Wilderness Survival program runs Tuesdays\, Sept 23–Oct 28\, 2025\, from 4–6 PM\, taking things to the next level with advanced archery drills\, tool carving\, matchless fire-starting\, cooking\, and more complex survival challenges. Both 6-week sessions meet at AdventureWoods\, 6060 Ardleigh St.\, and cost $150 ($140 for Member Families)\, with space limited to 16 participants per group.

These donations support Philly Goat Project’s free year-round programming\, including community goat walks\, children’s literacy events in libraries & schools\, environmental education events throughout city parks\, youth job training programs\, animal-assisted therapy events\, and bereavement programming. \nDonated Christmas trees provide delicious snacks for the goats\, and what they don’t eat is turned into wood chips for trails in city parks and community gardens thanks to a partnership with the Philadelphia Sanitation Department. Decorations should be removed from trees before donating them. \nGuests can enjoy an afternoon packed with activities at this year’s Christmas Tree-Cycle festivals\, including: \n● Farm Explorations: Discover the magic of the farm.\n● Roaring Fire Pit: Warm up with free s’mores and hot cocoa.\n● Games: Kids can participate in fun games in the Farm Olympics at Awbury and games for all ages at both locations\n● Goat Petting Zone: Meet and cuddle the goats of Philly Goat Project.\n● Quiet Visiting Area: A calm space for guests with special needs.\n● Philly Goat Project Swag Tables: Swag will be available\, including Philly Goat Project’s 2025 calendar showcasing the goats at Philadelphia landmarks. This year’s calendar features the goats on Lincoln Financial Field\, home of the Philadelphia Eagles\, and on stage at the Kimmel Center alongside the Philadelphia Orchestra. \nAttendees are welcome to join the festivities even without a tree. \nSee Philly Goat Project’s social media and website for more details!
