SUMMARY:The Hype About Hydrogen - A Book Event with Dr. Joseph Romm
DESCRIPTION:Join PCSSM in hosting Dr. Romm to talk about his new book!\n\n\nPlease join the Penn Center for Science\, Sustainability and the Media (PCSSM) in hosting PCSSM Senior Research Fellow Dr. Joseph Romm for a book talk and event on his upcoming book “The Hype About Hydrogen: False Promises and Real Solutions in the Race to Save the Climate” which critically examines hydrogen and other “false promises” as well as the real climate solutions that can be scaled up now. It is a complete revision and update to his 2004 book. He presents a compelling analysis of the risks and inefficiencies of hydrogen\, fusion\, e-fuels\, and small nuclear reactors—warning that misallocated investments in these technologies could exceed $1 trillion by 2040. \nRomm was Acting Assistant Secretary of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy in the 1990s\, overseeing a $1 billion budget on climate solutions. He holds an MIT physics PhD\, has authored 11 books\, and is a Senior Research Fellow at the UPenn Center for Science\, Sustainability\, and the Media where he researches climate solutions. In 2009\, Rolling Stone named him one of 100 “People Who Are Reinventing America” and Time named him “The Web’s most influential climate-change blogger.” Nobel-prize-winning economist Paul Krugman said\, “I have learned a lot of what I know about energy economics from Joe Romm.” \nWith decades of expertise\, Romm delivers well-researched and thought-provoking insights that are essential to the climate conversation. We hope you can join us for this engaging discussion! \nPCSSM Director Dr. Michael Mann will introduce Dr. Romm and the event. \nThis event will be in person and books will be available for purchase and signing at the end of the event. Beverages and snacks will be available for event attendees. \n\nDate: April 17\, 2025 \nTime: 4-5pm \nLocation: The Agora Room (1st Floor)\, Annenberg Public Policy Center\, 202 S 36th Street\, Philadelphia\, PA 19104 \n \nPlease note that while this event is organized by PCSSM\, the views\, opinions\, and statements are that of the speaker and do not necessarily reflect the views of PCSSM. PCSSM aims to promote varied viewpoints in fostering productive conversations in the climate and energy space.

SUMMARY:"Bridging the Gap Between Climate Science and Action" with Katharine Hayhoe
DESCRIPTION:Join PCSSM for a talk from climate scientist and climate communicator Katharine Hayhoe.\n\n\nPlease join the Penn Center for Science\, Sustainability and the Media (PCSSM) and the Annenberg Public Policy Center (APPC) for a talk from renowned climate scientist and climate communicator Dr. Katharine Hayhoe with an introduction from PCSSM Director Dr. Michael Mann. \nTalk Abstract: Scientists are often stereotyped as detached\, value-free thinkers\, yet it is often our humanity that compels us to address complex crises like climate change. The real question is not whether scientists should engage with society\, but how we can do so in ways that advance truth and\, increasingly\, justice. Drawing on social science research and her own experience\, Hayhoe will explore how engaging both minds and hearts enables science to move beyond simply informing to inspiring collective action for a better future. \n\nThis event will be in-person only in the Agora Room (first floor) in the Annenberg Public Policy Center (202 S 36th Street).
