SUMMARY:Film Screening: Love Sick in the West Bank & Coyotes
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, December 11 at 7 PM for a screening of Love Sick in the West Bank & Coyotes\, the acclaimed 20-minute short film recently awarded Best Short at the BFI Film Festival. \nAbout Love Sick in the West Bank \nA Palestinian family hosts a young American tourist after a simple misunderstanding. But as chaos unfolds in their village\, it doesn’t take too long for them to become part of the absurd mayhem that immediately ensues. \nAbout Coyotes \nSet on a desolate night in the occupied West Bank\, Coyotes follows young surgeon Lubna as an unexpected breakdown on a remote road leads to an unsettling encounter with a stranger. Blending thriller elements with sharp political insight\, director Said Zagha offers a gripping look at autonomy\, vulnerability\, and the pressures facing Palestinians simply trying to live their lives. Inspired by real accounts\, Coyotes reframes familiar narratives with complex characters and a tense\, atmospheric unfolding that highlights the emotional and political landscape of the region. \nThe screening will be followed by a pre-recorded interview with the director of both films\, Said Zagha and film critic\, Joseph Fahim. Tickets are pay-as-you-wish\, with a suggested donation of $10.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception of “Stories My Father Told Me” by Helen Zughaib
DESCRIPTION:Al-Bustan Seeds of Culture Gallery is pleased to present Stories My Father Told Me\, a solo exhibition by renowned artist Helen Zughaib. The exhibition opens Thursday\, November 13th\, from 6–9 PM at Al-Bustan’s gallery\, located at 310 W Master St\, Philadelphia PA. \nThrough 25 paintings\, Zughaib brings a vivid world alive—a world derived from the stories that her father would relay to her and her siblings while growing up in Lebanon. Though rooted in her specific familial experience\, the exhibition speaks to something universal: the enduring power of storytelling to bridge generations and preserve identity. Each painting invites viewers to recall their own storytellers\, to hear echoes of familiar voices\, and to find themselves within a shared fabric of belonging.

SUMMARY:Music Behind the Bars
DESCRIPTION:Al-Bustan Seeds of Culture is thrilled to announce an extraordinary evening of live music featuring former Syrian prisoners of war Hassan Abd Alrahman\, Asaad Shlash\, Faraj Birkdar\, Kesra Kurdi\, Ibrahim Byrakdar\, Haitham Alkatreb and Adnan Hassan. These seven musicians will perform the live in concert on March 22nd\, 2025\, at 7:00 PM at Al-Bustan Seeds of Culture\, located at 310 W Master St. Philadelphia\, PA. \nThirty years ago\, a group of political prisoners formed a band inside the cells of Syria’s notorious Sednaya Prison—dubbed the “Human Slaughterhouse” by Amnesty International in 2017—to resist the oppressive noise that deepened their suffering. Using makeshift instruments crafted from food scraps\, clothing threads\, and other prison materials\, they whispered and played their songs in secret. For the first time\, 34 of these songs were documented through Eylaf Bader Eddin’s research on Sijniyya\, a newly coined term for Syrian prison songs within the country’s cultural field. Now\, decades later\, several of these musicians have reunited to perform live\, using replicas of the instruments they originally built in prison. This concert sheds light on the resilience and creative resistance that emerged within Syria’s prison system. Davidson College and its community are invited to witness this extraordinary U.S. premiere\, followed by a discussion. Al-Bustan will provide an Iftar Dinner prior to the musical performance. \nCost: Tickets are $50\, with a sliding scale option of $20 to enhance accessibility. Student tickets are available for $15. Purchase tickets here.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception of Storyburst
DESCRIPTION:All year long\, Al-Bustan’s After School Arab Arts Students make artwork with their instructor\, Saria Rosenhaj. The program introduces students to technical art forms while celebrating the depth and cultural significance of Arab arts. “Al-Bustan” is Arabic for “The Garden.” The objective of the program is to plant seeds of creative expression through cross-cultural exchange and arts education. \nAl-Bustan is excited to welcome students from John Moffet and Samuel Powel schools into the Al-Bustan Gallery to showcase their artwork through an exhibition entitled Storyburst. Over the past few months\, students at both schools participated in visual storytelling through a multitude of mixed-media projects. They drew visual inspiration from such artists as Iasmin Omar Atta and Diana Al-Hadid\, and narrative inspiration from a variety of Arabic folktales. With spirited hand puppets\, deftly-drawn comics\, miniature sculptures of brave heroes\, and much more\, this exhibition displays an abundance of student storytelling! \nAl-Bustan will host an opening reception to celebrate the students on March 13th at Al-Bustan Gallery (310 W Master St Philadelphia\, PA)\, from 5-9pm.
