SUMMARY:Audubon Christmas Bird Count with Wissahickon Trails
DESCRIPTION:Participate in the 126th Audubon Christmas Bird Count! Join Wissahickon Trails staff and explore Four Mills Nature Reserve to count all the winter species we see and hear. \nThis important\, long-running wildlife census collects data across North America (and a bit of South America) to assess the health of bird populations\, and to help guide conservation action. More information on the history of the Christmas Bird Count can be found here: https://www.audubon.org/conservation/history-christmas-bird-count \nPrevious years have found Winter Wren\, Brown Creeper\, and Barred Owl at this site. All levels of birders welcome (including beginners!) \nThe walk will last approximately 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Sturdy\, waterproof shoes are recommended. Bring binoculars (or borrow ours!) \nWe are happy to offer this program at no cost to participants\, but if you are able\, a $10 suggested donation would be greatly appreciated. Wissahickon Trails is a local\, community-supported nonprofit. Our budget depends entirely on the generosity of our supporters—individuals\, foundations\, and corporations.  Donate online today. \n\nAccessibility Information \nThe walk will be approximately 1 mile over fairly flat natural trails (roots and stones common) at a slow walking pace\, with multiple stops for standing and listening. Access to trails requires crossing two bridges with multiple steps\, additionally two short stepping stone crossings are on the route. Restrooms are available.

SUMMARY:Healthy Soil\, Healthy Water: Composting for a Thriving Watershed with Colleen Falicki
DESCRIPTION:Everything is connected—from the scraps in your kitchen to the water in our streams. When food waste is composted instead of thrown away\, it transforms into a powerful soil conditioner that benefits watersheds in major ways: \n\n\nReduces runoff: Compost-enriched soil acts like a sponge\, holding rainwater and filtering out pollutants before they reach rivers and streams. \n\n\n\n\nBuilds healthier landscapes: Compost restores soil health\, which supports stronger plants and ecosystems that naturally protect water quality. \n\n\n\n\nReduces chemical pollution: By naturally enriching your soil\, compost decreases the need for synthetic fertilizers\, which often wash into waterways\, causing harmful algae blooms and disrupting ecosystems. \n\n\nBy choosing to compost\, you’re protecting your plants and your local waterways.\n \nJoin  Colleen Falicki  to discover how simple composting can be and how it helps preserve our water—one scrap at a time. \nAccessibility information:  \nThe first floor of the Four Mills Barn (where the program takes place) is wheelchair accessible and has heating/air conditioning\, a water bottle refilling station\, accessible all gender bathrooms\, and seating available. The first floor family restroom has a private changing table and there is a nearby private area that can be used as a lactation room.

SUMMARY:Great Backyard Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Each February\, for four days\, the world comes together for the love of birds. Over these four days people spend time in their favorite places watching and counting as many birds as they can find and reporting them using eBird. These observations help scientists better understand and protect global bird populations. \nJoin Wissahickon Trails for a family friendly\, kid-focused event to learn about\, count and celebrate birds. We’ll spend some time learning about bird identification\, how to use binoculars\, and take a walk around the Four Mills Preserve to count all the birds we can find. \nDress for the weather as we will be spending some time outside. The trails may be wet or muddy\, so be prepared. | Bring binoculars if you have them or borrow ours if you don’t. \nThe Great Backyard Bird Count is an inter-organizational effort between the Cornell Lab of Ornithology\, National Audubon Society\, and Birds Canada. \nAccessibility Notes \nThe walk will be approximately 0.5 miles over fairly flat natural trails (roots and stones common) at a slow walking pace\, with multiple stops for standing and listening. Access to trails requires crossing two bridges with multiple steps\, additionally there is a short stepping stone crossing on the route. Restrooms are available.
