SUMMARY:Mindful Birding Walk: Scott Arboretum at Swarthmore College
DESCRIPTION:Combining nature\, mindfulness\, and community engagement is such a powerful way to connect people to the environment.\n\n\nJoin us in this collaborative effort with Wild Birds Unlimited in Glen Mills\, Holly Merker (co-author of the book “Ornitherapy”\, A Mindful Birding and Forest Bathing Guide\, and Co-host of the Mindful Birding PodcastMindful Birding Network\, Founder & Member)\, and Scott Arboretum at Swarthmore College. (We will meet at the entrance of the Arboretum. Look for the sign). \nMindful Birding pairs observing birds with mindfulness techniques\, creating a practice that cultivates a heightened awareness and fosters connections. Labeling or identifying birds is not the primary focus\, but instead the intention is slowing down and noticing\, using birds as our guides. \nThrough guided instruction\, we’ll practice simple mindfulness exercises to engage our sensory awareness while intentionally tuning into the birds surrounding us. Techniques and prompts will accompany the gently guided walk\, which can enhance our observation skills\, deepening our experiences with wild birds around us. This in turn amplifies the positive benefits birds provide to our overall wellness. Participants will receive a take-home journal to foster observation and awareness\, and provide take-away techniques. \nAccessibility information: This program has been developed for most all mobility levels. This will be a slow-paced walk on wide and flat unpaved trails\, where we might sit and sometimes stand\, for short periods of time as we observe birds. “ \nPhoto of Northern Parula and apple blossoms attached. Since his retirement\, he decided to pursue his lifelong passion in photography. While his primary photographs are of \nhorticulture\, he has recently included birds\, dragonflies and butterflies to his portfolio. \nHank also serves the community by volunteering to take photographs for the Delaware Nature Society\, Bucktoe Creek Preserve\, Longwood Gardens and the Delaware Center for \nHorticulture.
