DESCRIPTION:Dive into the future of trash with a panel discussion on burning\, recycling\, and composting. What's next for Philly and what can we do?\n\n\nCouncilmember Mark Squilla has introduced a new bill called the “Zero Waste Circular Economy Act” that would transition how Philadelphia manages waste to a recovery-based system that prioritizes composting\, reuse\, repair\, remanufacturing and recycling. Using long-term contracts that help drive private investment as a primary mechanism to fund implementation and create economic opportunity\, the bill has garnered the support of the Parker Administration. \nCouncilmember Jamie Gauthier’s “Stop Trashing Our Air Act\,” which calls for a complete ban on incineration\, set the stage for this new bill by drawing public attention to how Philadelphia manages its waste\, but critics of CM Squilla’s bill say that it doesn’t go far enough in the short term. What does this mean and what’s next for waste management in Philadelphia? \nJoin us for a panel discussion on this very important topic that affects all of us. Speakers Maurice Sampson from Phoenix Collaborations and Samantha Wittchen from Circular Cities Network will share their thoughts and lead a discussion on the topic. DESCRIPTION:Herald in the change of seasons with a fall plant walk in Mt Airy 's beloved Carpenter woods with your friends and fellow coop members!!\n\n\nHerald in the change of seasons with an early fall plant walk! We’ll spend time with our woody plant friends – trees and shrubs – studying bark\, twigs and buds\, as well as the lingering fruits of autumn. We will be honing our botanical skills and also discussing the medicinal properties of the plants we encounter. We’ll gather at the entrance of Carpenter’s Woods (at South Mt Pleasant and Greene St) and explore the trails through the lovely woods there. This walk is for anyone looking to start their journey with plants or curious to learn more about them. We will be outside\, so come ready for any weather\, rain or shine! (We’ll cancel only if there is severe or dangerous weather.) \nThis workshop is hosted by Simone Davis\, an herbalist\, gardener\, educator\, and founder of Nommo Apothecary. As a clinical herbalist of 9 years\, she has run a Brooklyn Apothecary for 3 years and oversees a free Community Herb Clinic. Simone also joined the Co-op as Outreach Coordinator this past early Spring after relocating to Philly from New York.

The current plan is for the major store renovation\, which will require a temporary closure of the store\, to take place in Summer 2027. Less disruptive preparatory work on the backyard and on the store’s exterior will begin this summer.  \nWe want to be sure to do what we can through this renovation to address members’ needs\, in addition to updating equipment\, front end queueing\, and a few other key store features.  \nPlease join us for a Member Forum to see where we are with the project\, and to provide feedback. Additionally\, we will present information about a possible Member Loan campaign so that members can help support the project – and earn interest.  \nFinger food and drinks will be served at the meeting.

There will be breakout sessions just for folks working in co-op management\, or for those working on co-op boards\, or for those working for a scrappy startup. ALL are welcome (it’s a co-op thing).The conference will run from 9:00am to 3:00pm and will include a light breakfast\, lunch\, and opportunities for socializing and networking with fellow cooperators. There will be many flavoring options including fruits of the season. Popsicles\, parfaits and mini ice cream sandwiches will be on the menu to quench the warm weather heat.  \nBring an appetite for sampling. This will be a free workshop and all ages are welcome. \nThe demo starts at 1pm. Please arrive a few mins before 1pm. SUMMARY:Habitat Gardens in Action at Historic Hope Lodge with Paige Menton
DESCRIPTION:Join us as the gardeners at  Historic Hope Lodge  show us how to bring our habitat gardens to life by touring the grounds of the property.\n\n\nJoin Paige Menton at Historice Hope Lodge in Fort Washington PA to see Habitat Gardens in action. Hear from Weavers Way Environment Committee grant recipients about successes and struggles as they created their gardens and see one garden in its full glory. The gardeners at Hope Lodge will share their experiences with their gardens and answer questions and offer tips and advice on how to replicate this in your garden. This workshop is being offered as a part of a three workshop series. There is a fee of $15 payable at the door for this workshop. You can enroll in all three workshops for a discounted price of $40. All funds collected will be used by Weavers Way Environment Committee for their community grants program.

DESCRIPTION:Learn to how to find awe and joy in our everyday life with Claudia Apfelbaum.\n\n\nExperiencing awe takes us out of our hum drum existence and brings us to a state \nof inner excitement and reverence. It is something most humans experience on \noccasion\, often when we are in nature and when we see something unexpected\, \nmind-blowing and uplifting. Two rainbows arching one above the other can bring \na feeling of awe to the beholder.  \nScientists are studying the effect of this universal experience and have identified \nthat many good social and personal-life improving “properties” follow the \nexperience of awe. They have found that experiencing awe increases our feelings \nof social connection\, reduces stress\, increases our sense of generosity\, and \nimproves our overall sense of well-being!  \nNot only is this exciting\, it is possible to create moments of awe in our daily lives. \n \nIn this workshop\, we will talk about our experiences of awe and learn ways to \nincrease our capacity to experience awe in our daily lives. This in person workshop will be hosted by Claudia at Weavers Way Germantown in the Outreach office on 6/7 from 11-1pm.

DESCRIPTION:Find out how to turn  your corner of northwest Philly into a beautiful nature preserve from  Steve Jones\, a local  ecological practitioner.\n\n\nHomeowners and apartment dwellers can use their outdoor space\, no matter how small\, to support wildlife and human health. Learn how you can successfully introduce more native plants to your planters\, gardens\, and lawns.  \nCome home with a Pennsylvania native plant to get the ball rolling! Steve Jones is an environmental educator and ecological practitioner. He serves on the board of Wissahickon Restoration Volunteers\, a community-based ecological restoration program. He also manages the native plant nursery for LandHealth Institute\, a Philadelphia environmental non-profit. Steve is the President of the Philadelphia Botanical Club.  \nThis in person workshop will be held at Weavers Way Outreach Office\, located at 326b West Chelten Ave on April 29th at 6:30pm.
