SUMMARY:Author Event: Thaddaeus Peay
DESCRIPTION:Norristown resident and NASD teacher\, Thaddeus Peay will be here to discuss his book!\n\n\nJoin us for an amazing discussion \nBlack male students are not failing school— \nschool is failing them. \nFor generations\, Black boys have been misunderstood\, undervalued\, and systematically neglected within America’s education system. Disproportionately disciplined\, underrepresented in leadership and advanced coursework\, and reduced to narrow stereotypes\, they have become the most overlooked population in schools across the country. \nIn The Forgotten Population\, educator and advocate Thaddaeus Peay II exposes how bias\, fear\, and low expectations shape the educational experiences of Black male students long before they ever step into a classroom. Drawing from history\, lived experience\, and classroom reality\, Peay challenges educators\, school leaders\, families\, and policymakers to confront uncomfortable truths about discipline\, value\, literacy\, and intellectual development.

SUMMARY:Free Local Author Event
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a historical adventure written Norristown Area School District teacher\, Joe Paone\n\n\nHere is what author Lisa Scottoline said about Joe’s book:\n“I loved Joe Paone’s wonderful novel\, THE BARON’S DAUGHTER\, which is so beautifully written that it’s hard to believe it’s his debut. I found myself completely immersed in the love story of Angelina and Paolo\, in what is at once a heartfelt romance\, a compelling war story\, and a meticulously-researched historical thriller.”– Lisa Scottoline \nA love forbidden. A truth buried. A nation on the brink.\n1915\, southern Italy. Angelina Ruffolo\, the daughter of a powerful baron\, yearns for more than a life of quiet obedience. But her family’s plans don’t include Paolo—the soft-spoken gardener whose radical ideals and quiet courage have captured her heart. When Paolo is wrongly accused of murder in a failed attempt to halt Italy’s march into war\, Angelina is thrust into a world of secrets\, lies\, and deadly consequences. \nAs Paolo is forced from prison to the front lines\, and Angelina risks everything to uncover the truth\, their bond is tested by betrayal\, shifting allegiances\, and the brutal tide of war. From the olive groves of Calabria to the blood-soaked trenches of the Isonzo\, The Baron’s Daughter weaves a tale of impossible choices\, unwavering hope\, and a love that refuses to be silenced. \nStep into a sweeping historical novel where romance and resistance collide. \n \nJoe Paone is an author of both adult and children’s fiction. His works include The Baron’s Daughter and Michael and the Magic Christmas Mirror. He currently teaches history and government in the Philadelphia suburbs. \nJoe holds a B.S.Ed. in History from West Chester University and a M.Ed. from Gwynedd Mercy University. Born in Ambler\, Pennsylvania\, he is the son of Italian-born immigrants. His Italian-American heritage plays a significant role in shaping his storytelling. \nBlending his deep love of history with timeless themes of love\, loyalty\, and the human cost of war\, The Baron’s Daughter marks his debut in historical fiction. \nJoe enjoys spending time with his three children\, inventing stories to spark their young imaginations. Michael and the Magic Christmas Mirror is a tribute to those cherished moments of storytelling. \nJoe lives in Lansdale\, Pennsylvania\, with his wife\, their three children\, a beagle named Ellie\, and a cat named Munchkin. When he’s not writing or teaching\, he enjoys playing guitar or spending time at the South Jersey shore and on the golf course.

SUMMARY:Nerdy Speaker Series: Rebels with a Cause
DESCRIPTION:Come nerd out with us as Dr. Jaroff shares short stories from 19th century women authors who rebelled against the patriarchy\n\n\nRebels With a Cause: 19th-Century American Women Writers Protest Against Patriarchy \nJoin us for a discussion about how these stories help us to rethink the role of women both then and now\, while they encourage us to keep pushing back against those who forget that\, in America\, it is “freedom and justice for all.” \nWhile the image of the “True Woman” in Victorian-age America—angelic\, passive\, and born to serve men—remains a powerful literary trope\, women authors offered opposing images of strong\, assertive\, and downright rebellious female characters that counteract such stereotypes. Mary Wilkins Freeman\, Sarah Orne Jewett\, and Kate Chopin published several short stories featuring strong\, capable women and girls who fought against the strict confines of the domestic sphere set up to restrict their movements and restrain their desires. In “A New England Nun\,” “A White Heron\,” “The Storm\,” and “The Revolt of Mother\,” these authors explore what happens when women take control of their own fate\, in order to express their independence from patriarchal law and order. \n \nCost: Your ticket includes a complimentary glass of wine and light snacks. All proceeds benefit Norristown Page Turners\, a 501(c)(3) public charity. \n \nSpeaker Background: Dr. Rebecca Jaroff is profesor emeritus of the English department at Ursinus College. She is also an avid reader and the board president of Norristown Page Turners. \n \nPARKING: is plentiful and free on Lafayette St\, just one block away from Recycle Read Repeat Bookstore. \nPublic Transportation \nWe are also conveniently located right across the street from Norristown Transportation Center which serves the Norristown/Manayunk regional Rail Line\, the Norristown High Speed Line and many bus routes.
