SUMMARY:Climate & Health Roundtable and Listening Circle
DESCRIPTION:Faith Community Climate & Health Roundtable Climate and Health Listening Circle\n\n\nHosted by PA IPL and Bread & Roses Community Fund\n\nCongregations and faith-based groups are on the frontlines of providing critical resources and services to communities. By providing these resources\, faith communities are responding to the environmental and climate needs of communities\, often without defining the work in an environmental or climate justice framework. Faith communities provide blankets when it’s cold\, cooling when it’s hot\, access to food pantries and other critical resources communities need as extreme weather events increase and worsen. \nClimate change and adverse health outcomes are significant and growing challenges\, particularly for low-income communities of color\, the elderly\, children\, and pregnant people in the Philadelphia region. Climate-related health issues contribute to a widening healthcare gap\, which is acute for many neighborhoods and residents that faith communities serve. \nJoin us for a community meal and roundtable to unpack how climate change is impacting the health and wellness of people the faith community serves and the role the faith community plays in climate resilience and justice. The knowledge roundtable participants’ share will anonymously inform a climate and health feasibility project\, which is the first step in the potential development of a climate and health fund by Bread & Roses Community Fund. Attendance is capped to 30 participants so register today! \nRoundtable participants will receive a $50 gift certificate and a meal for sharing their wisdom and expertise. This convening is limited to folks in the following six counties: Philadelphia\, Bucks\, Delaware\, Chester\, Montgomery\, and Camden (NJ). \nLocation: Germantown Unitarian Church6511 Lincoln Dr\, Philadelphia\, PA19119Date: Thursday\, May 29thTime: 6:00-6:30 pm Community Meal 6:30-8:30 Roundtable Discussion \n \nWho is this circle for?\n\nYou are a religious leader supporting your congregation in providing community services like a food pantry\, shelter\, or health clinics\nYou are a volunteer who supports your local congregation in providing community services like a food pantry\, shelter\, or health clinics\nYou are a person who accesses community services through a local congregation’s food pantry\, shelter\, or health clinic\nYou are a person of faith/conscience/values that supports community mutual aid efforts\nYou are a person who holds a unique perspective or experience or passion related to gaps in the region at the intersections of faith\, climate\, and health\n\n \nIf you are not sure if this circle is a good fit for you\, please reach out to Sparrow sparrow@paipl.org to learn more about this circle\, who it is designed for\, and what outcomes we hope to achieve. \n \nAccessibility:\nGetting There: \n\nBy public transportation: Accessible by Regional Rail Line (R8 – Chestnut Hill West – Upsal Train Station) just two blocks North of the Church. Also\, accessible by the bus Route “53” (Wayne Avenue and Lincoln Drive) and bus Route “H” (Lincoln Drive and Hortter Street) buses.\nParking: There is a car lot behind the church on Johnson Street between Wayne Avenue and Greene Street. Use 359 W Johnson St. To get to the large parking lot from Lincoln Drive\, turn left on Wayne and left again on Johnson or turn right on W. Hortter\, right on Greene and right on Johnson or use GPS address 359 W. Johnson St.\n\nBuilding Accessibility: We will be in the Edna Jones Assembly Room\, which is accessible via the first door to the building from the parking lot with no steps. If you are entering from the front of the building or a different entrance\, take the elevator to the “upper floor” to access. You can also get to the Assembly Room through the side entrance\, going up the flight of stairs\, and entering the door at the end of the hallway. \nChildcare and translation services can be provided. Please reach out to sparrow@paipl.org to let us know your needs. The meal served will be kosher and halal with a gluten free option available. Please stay home if you feel unwell. Masks will be available and are encouraged. \n \nYour Hosts:\nBread & Roses Community Fund is uniquely positioned to engage and amplify the work of grassroots faith leaders striving to improve health outcomes for communities most impacted by climate change. Bread & Roses provides grants for community organizing\, defined as community-led collective action\, which is essential to address how a global challenge like climate change can profoundly affect local communities\, especially communities already grappling with environmental racism and racialized wealth gaps. \nPA IPL is a regional nonprofit focused on mobilizing people of faith and conscience to take action on climate change as a moral issue. We are a network of people\, communities\, and congregations taking action across Pennsylvania and Delaware through reflection\, education\, advocacy\, and conservation efforts.

SUMMARY:Community Gatherings – October 2024
DESCRIPTION:Faith and Civic Engagement\n\n\nCommunity Gatherings serve as a place for our members (and our wider network) to connect with each other\, learn about the state of the environment here in Pennsylvania\, receive updates on our work\, and meet in regional cohorts. Join us from 7PM-8:30PM. We will have an hour of programming followed by 30 minutes for regional breakouts moderated by PA IPL team members. \nThis month\, we will discuss how faith calls us to be civically engaged. How can we start to make changes by asking questions about our community? Given our mutual interdependence\, how do our faiths call us to live in the world? What might our world look like if we started conversations from a place of community and radical acceptance? Let’s come together to explore the ways in which our faith traditions call us to engage in the civic process. \n \nAttendance for the regional breakouts is optional – it is designed to provide a time for connection\, sharing\, and updates. A staff member will be present in each room. This is also a great opportunity for our congregational members to share about upcoming events or things in planning\, ask staff for advice or resources\, and more. The regional breakouts for October are: SouthWest PA\, SouthEast PA\, NorthEast PA\, + Central PA (folks from anywhere else are welcomed to join SouthEast PA).

SUMMARY:PA IPL Film Festival 2024
DESCRIPTION:Taking Root\, Stewards of the Land\, Common Ground\n\n\n\nDate: Thursday\, September 26thTime: 6PMTitle: Taking Root: The Vision of Wangari Maathai \n \nDescription:TAKING ROOT tells the dramatic story of Kenyan Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Wangari Maathai whose simple act of planting trees grew into a nationwide movement to safeguard the environment\, protect human rights\, and defend democracy—a movement for which this charismatic woman became an iconic inspiration. \n \nSynopsis:TAKING ROOT: THE VISION OF WANGARI MAATHAI tells the inspiring story of the Green Belt Movement of Kenya and its founder Wangari Maathai\, the first environmentalist and first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. \nThe U.S.- educated Professor Maathai discovered her life’s work by reconnecting with the rural women with whom she had grown up. Their lives had become intolerable: they were walking longer distances for firewood\, clean water was scarce\, the soil was disappearing from their farms\, and their children were suffering from malnutrition. Maathai thought to herself\, “Well\, why not plant trees?” She soon discovered that tree planting had a ripple effect of empowering change. Countering the devastating cultural effects of colonialism\, Maathai began teaching communities about self-knowledge as a path to change and community action. The women worked successively against deforestation\, poverty\, ignorance\, embedded economic interests\, and violent political oppression. They became a national political force that helped to bring down Kenya’s 24-year dictatorship. \nThrough TV footage and chilling first person accounts\, TAKING ROOT documents the dramatic confrontations of the 1980s and ’90s as the women of the Green Belt Movement confront human rights abuses and environmental degradation. Cinema verité footage of the tree nurseries and the women and children who tend them brings to life the confidence and joy of people working to improve their own lives on their terms. \nTAKING ROOT captures a world-view in which nothing is perceived as impossible and presents an awe-inspiring profile of Maathai’s unstoppable and courageous thirty-year journey to protect the environment\, defend human rights\, and promote democracy. \n \n80 minutes run time \n \nWatch trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwTLbPjVo3Y \n \n*Please note: due to streaming requirements\, tickets may not be used to host a congregation screening only for individual/family viewing. Nothing can stop them. Almost. \n“Eschewing resilience as a trope\, Serán las dueñas de la tierra approaches its subject matter with dignified candor in the face of impossible circumstances.” \n–Néstor David Pastor\, North American Congress on Latin America (NACLA) \n \nSynopsis:Stephanie\, Ian\, and Alfredo are landless ecological farmers striving to produce healthy food for local consumption in Puerto Rico. In this economically depressed US-territory – highly dependent on food imports and a frequent target for hurricanes – producing food locally is urgent. The documentary shows the protagonists’ grit as they attempt to carve a living without land ownership or capital. \n \n90 minutes run time \n \nWatch the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvVgPjEjvGo \n \n*** Film is in Spanish with English subtitles. *** \n \n*Please note: due to streaming requirements\, tickets may not be used to host a congregation screening only for individual/family viewing. The film reveals how unjust practices forged our current farm system in which farmers of all colors are literally dying to feed us. The film profiles a hopeful and uplifting movement of white\, black\, and indigenous farmers who are using alternative “regenerative” models of agriculture that could balance the climate\, save our health\, and stabilize America’s economy – before it’s too late. \n \n87 minutes run time. \n \nWatch the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-M4Hq0MKFA \n \nView more resources here: https://commongroundfilm.org/resources/ \n \n*Please note: due to streaming requirements\, tickets may not be used to host a congregation screening only for individual/household viewing. SUMMARY:Climate Conversations with PA IPL & JEA - August 21\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:Solar for PA Schools Grant Program\n\n\nJoin Pennsylvania Interfaith Power & Light and the Jewish Earth Alliance on August 21 at 7:00pm for a discussion promoting the Solar for Schools program recently passed in PA. Solar for Schools will help school districts across the Commonwealth install solar panels to lower energy costs while reducing carbon pollution – ensuring more resources will go to our students and teachers. There is plenty of federal and state money available\, but few school districts know how to apply. We need local champions to call their school districts! \nSpeaker: Liz Robinson – Executive Director\, Philadelphia Solar Energy Association \nThe Solar for PA Schools Grant Program (Solar for Schools) is a targeted state investment that would fund solar energy projects at public k-12 schools\, community colleges\, and career technical schools across Pennsylvania. If implemented\, the project has the potential to: \n\nSave schools money and increase the predictability of energy costs\nCreate family-sustaining\, local jobs\nIncrease Pennsylvania’s renewable energy production\n\nEnergy is one of the highest expenses for school districts in Pennsylvania. On-site solar can reduce those energy costs\, potentially saving Pennsylvania school districts hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. These savings make solar a crucial tool in combatting underfunding that affects rural\, urban\, and suburban schools across the Commonwealth; schools could use money they save on utilities to fund other needs\, like repairs\, or to save taxpayers money. \nThe construction of solar projects would create family-sustaining jobs in communities across the Commonwealth. Kids would be able go to schools powered by solar arrays built by their parents and neighbors\, seeing the impact of union jobs and clean energy on their lives. At the same time\, we could decrease our reliance on fossil fuels and reduce pollution\, benefitting the environment. \nInvesting in solar energy is a blue-green cause: it unites labor and environmental interests to create family-sustaining jobs\, helps facilitate PA’s transition to clean energy\, and save schools money. Support for Solar for Schools is bipartisan and diverse\, including labor\, environmental\, educational\, and industry groups. From the Evangelical Environmentalist Network to the PA Building Trades\, organizations across the Commonwealth are putting their full weight behind the legislation. \nThe Solar for PA Schools Grant Program would fund 50% of the cost of project construction using state funds. Federal money from the Inflation Reduction Act would cover 30-50% of the remaining installation costs\, with school districts responsible for 0-20%\, plus operation and maintenance costs. Using this combination of state dollars and federal funding available through the Inflation Reduction Act\, the cost to schools is minimal\, and the projects would bring federal funds back to Pennsylvania. Now is the time to incentivize solar adoption\, meet our climate goals\, and support our public schools! \nThis event is part of our Climate Conversations quarterly program series hosted in partnership with Jewish Earth Alliance.

SUMMARY:Community Gatherings – July 2024
DESCRIPTION:An Intergenerational Approach to the Climate Crisis\n\n\nCommunity Gatherings serve as a place for our members (and our wider network) to connect with each other\, learn about the state of the environment here in Pennsylvania\, receive updates on our work\, and meet in regional cohorts. Join us from 7PM-8:30PM. We will have an hour of programming followed by 30 minutes for regional breakouts moderated by PA IPL team members. \nIn July’s regional gathering we will be discussing the unique challenges of various generations facing the climate crisis\, and imagining an intergenerational approach to the climate crisis. Lydia Wylie-Kellermann will ground us in a conversation about the gifts of intergenerational work amidst the climate crisis. In her new book This Sweet Earth: Walking with Our Children in the Age of Climate Collapse\, she dares to argue that while the future remains unknown\, there is still awe and wonder\, love and struggle\, gratitude and overwhelming joy to be found. This will be a time for honoring our elders and our children and sharing stories about the ways we stumble upon hope when we do this work together across generations. \n \nAttendance for the regional breakouts is optional – it is designed to provide a time for connection\, sharing\, and updates. We are specifically looking to recruit at least 10 volunteer leaders across the state who will become part of our Civic Engagement Cohort. This cohort will receive training and assist with the priorities of our 2024 campaign\, including voter registration and education. If you have 2-5 hours/month between August-October to offer\, would you consider spending them with us on this important endeavor? Whether you are a youth\, career-person\, or retired – we need all hands on deck! \nYou’ll learn important skills in interfaith leadership\, how to have conversations about civic participation\, and how to build community relationships. We are hosting this no-strings-attached informational and volunteer orientation session on Thursday\, June 27th. Please come join us to learn more about the campaign and how you can get involved.
