SUMMARY:What Pandemic-Era Experiments Can Teach Us About the Future of Public Space
DESCRIPTION:Lessons from Philadelphia’s pandemic-era streeteries\n\n\nWhen the pandemic hit\, cities around the world turned parking spaces into lively outdoor dining areas known as “streeteries” or “COVID cafés.” For a moment\, sidewalks\, streets\, and parklets became some of the city’s most vibrant spaces. However\, the rise and fall of these installations also highlighted a deeper story: how policies\, regulations\, and local politics determine who is allowed to use the street—and who is not. \nThis panel brings together researchers and local practitioners studying how streeteries spread across cities\, with a spotlight on Philadelphia’s experience\, and why some neighborhoods experienced many while others saw few\, and how shifting rules ultimately led to many of them disappearing. Their work sheds light on a bigger question facing cities everywhere: Will temporary pandemic experiments lead to lasting improvements in how we design and share public space? \nJoin us for a conversation about what cities—including Philadelphia—got right\, what proved challenging\, and what these lessons mean for the future of our streets and public space. \nConfirmed speakers include: \n\nJosh Davidson\, Assistant Professor of Data Science and Computer Science\, Oberlin College\nAriel Ben-Amos\, Adjunct Faculty\, Department of City and Regional Planning\, University of Pennsylvania; Policy and Partnerships Group Supervisor\, Philadelphia Water Department; and Founder\, StreetBoxPHL\n\nPHOTO: Outdoor dining at Booker’s restaurant in West Philadelphia. SUMMARY:Nowak Memorial Lecture | Founding Visions: A Journey of Collaboration
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special lecture honoring Nowak’s legacy and exploring the power of collaboration with Reinvestment Fund.\n\n\n7th Annual Nowak Memorial Lecture \nFounding Visions: A Journey of Collaboration & Impact \nHow can mission-driven finance drive social change? The Penn Institute for Urban Research and Reinvestment Fund invite you to the Seventh Annual Jeremy Nowak Memorial Lecture. On this\, the 20th anniversary year of Penn IUR and the 40th anniversary of the origination of Reinvestment Fund\, we will reflect on the mission and impact of community development financial institutions and the leadership role played by Reinvestment Fund in these efforts. Speakers will examine how visionary leadership and partnerships can reshape communities for the better. \nThis discussion brings together three community development leaders and founding members of Reinvestment Fund—Pat Smith\, Joyce Wilkerson\, and Eva Gladstein—who will share their experiences in launching what was originally the Delaware Valley Community Reinvestment Fund. They will explore the economic and social conditions that motivated their work\, the challenges of building an institution dedicated to advancing equity through investment\, and the decision to bring on Jeremy Nowak\, a community organizer\, as the organization’s first President and CEO. Jeremy would later become a member of the Penn IUR Advisory Board. \nModerated by Dr. Katherine O’Regan\, Professor of Public Policy and Planning at the NYU Wagner School and Furman Center for Real Estate and Urban Policy\, former HUD Assistant Secretary for Policy\, Development and Research\, Reinvestment Fund Board Member\, and Penn IUR Fellow\, this conversation will offer a rare\, first-hand perspective of the origin of this Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) by its founding members and the values that continue to guide its work—collaboration\, data-driven decision-making\, and a steadfast commitment to expanding opportunity in disinvested communities.

SUMMARY:Defying Displacement: Book Talk and Conversation with Andrew Lee
DESCRIPTION:Join the us for this book talk and conversation on Defying Displacement: Urban Recomposition and Social War\, a new book by AK Press.\n\n\nCities around the world are in the midst of a profound transformation as the wealthy price out the remnants of the urban working class\, especially people of color. Displacement is neither accidental or inevitable. It happens because a whole range of people and institutions profit handsomely. Defying Displacement: Urban Recomposition and Social War\, focused on the US but informed by global examples\, investigates gentrification from the perspective of the people fighting it\, members of communities whose survival is threatened by some of the most powerful institutions on the planet. \nJoin the Penn Institute for Urban Research and the Weitzman School’s Department of City and Regional Planning for this book talk and conversation on Defying Displacement: Urban Recomposition and Social War\, a new book by AK Press. The book highlights activists and residents in struggle against displacement and how they are charting the way forward to affordable and sustainable cities run by the people who inhabit them. \nAndrew Lee\, author and activist\, will be joined in conversation with Akira Drake Rodriguez\, Assistant Professor of City and Regional Planning. \nAndrew Lee has been involved with grassroots anti-displacement campaigns in San José\, California. He currently lives in Philadelphia\, where he continues to work on similar issues. He has written for Yes! Magazine\, Teen Vogue\, and The Progressive and serves as Managing Editor for The Anti-Racism Daily. \nAkira Drake Rodriguez is an Assistant Professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s Weitzman School of Design. Her research examines the ways that disenfranchised groups re-appropriate their marginalized spaces in the city to gain access to and sustain urban political power. She is the author of Diverging Space for Deviants: The Politics of Atlanta’s Public Housing (UGA Press\, 2021)\, which explores how both the politics of public housing planning and race in Atlanta created a politics of resistance within public housing developments.
