SUMMARY:Freedom to Grow: Celebrating 250 Years of America's Native Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:Nature walk exploring native plants in shaping the American landscape environmentally\, culturally\, and historically.\n\n\nMeets at Banning Regional Park Playground. This guided nature walk honors the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence by exploring the enduring role of native plants in shaping the American landscape environmentally\, culturally\, and historically. Highlights include the area’s native plant species; how Indigenous peoples\, such as the Lenape\, used and continue to use these plants for food and medicine; and how early colonists relied on these same native species for survival and independence. Participants will receive a seed packet of native species. Walk led by Partnership for the Delaware Estuary. \nThis event is part of the communitywide NEA Big Read program featuring the novel\, The Seed Keeper by Diane Wilson. To learn more\, visit our NEA page. \nNEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.

SUMMARY:Volunteer Shell Bagging Event - October 4 - Philadelphia
DESCRIPTION:Help restore shorelines! Join PDE in bagging recycled oyster shell to create habitat for marine life and protect coasts from erosion.\n\n\nPartnership for the Delaware Estuary (PDE) has been collecting oyster shell from Philadelphia restaurants since 2022. Generally\, spent oyster shells go to landfills\, but with our recycling program shells are going back to the Delaware Bay. \nOyster shells are important for baby oysters and the entire aquatic ecosystem. Oysters are ecosystem engineers and a keystone species in the Delaware Bay. These awesome shellfish not only filter our water but oyster reefs are important habitat for lots of local wildlife. By returning oyster shell back to the Delaware Bay we can create habitat for juvenile oysters to settle on. We need to put our recycled oyster shells into bags to use in local living shoreline installations. The process is time consuming\, so we need volunteers like you! It is a little messy and a bit physical\, so be prepared! \nWho: Anyone age 16 or over! (Volunteers under 18 need parental consent or a parent present prior to participating) \nWhat: Putting recycled oyster shells into bags for use in Delaware Bay shoreline restoration projects. \nWhen: Saturday\, October 4\, 9:00am-1:00pm \nWhere: Penrose Ferry Rd Philadelphia\, PA (exact address and directions to follow after registration). \nWhat to Bring: Weather dependent clothing\, close toed shoes\, gloves (if don’t have your own\, we’ll have some available)\, water\, and snacks \nPlease contact Leah Morgan (lmorgan@delawareestuary.org) for any additional questions.

SUMMARY:Philadelphia Water Department Spokesdog Competition
DESCRIPTION:Does your pup have what it takes to be the next Spokesdog and represent Philly on the path to cleaner waterways?\n\n\nNo one likes dog poop left on the sidewalk…not people\, not pups\, and especially not our waterways! Dog waste left on the ground can wash into storm drains and eventually enters our local creeks and streams\, worsening water quality and negatively impacting aquatic plants and animals. That is exactly why the Philadelphia Water Department (PWD) is seeking one special dog to represent the city as its 2025 Spokesdog! \nThe PWD Spokesdog will help to educate dog owners around the city about the importance of picking up after your pup to help improve water quality. The Spokesdog will represent the Philadelphia Water Department as its official doggy mascot through appearances at in-person events and educational campaigns. \nSpokesdog Competition Event Details \n\nDate: Sunday\, June 8\nTime: 2 – 5 PM\nLocation: The Boozy Mutt\, 2639 Poplar Street\, Philadelphia\, PA 19130\n\nHow will the Spokesdog be chosen? \nDuring the event\, dogs and their owners will be asked to participate in several stations\, including dog waste and tap water trivia\, a guessing game\, dog poop cornhole\, trick display and costume contest. Points will be awarded for each station. The dog with the most points at the end of the event will be crowned the 2025 Philadelphia Water Department Spokesdog. Prizes will be awarded to multiple dogs. \nWhat will the Spokesdog responsibilities be? \nThe chosen 2025 Philadelphia Water Department Spokesdog will be asked to participate in a one-time photo shoot to obtain images of your pup in the official Spokesdog cape. The winner will be invited to attend other local events hosted by the Philadelphia Water Department or Partnership for the Delaware Estuary during 2025. Compensation will be provided for attendance at each event. To read the full Spokesdog Agreement\, click here. \nAdditional Information: \nThe 2025 Spokesdog Competition is being organized by the Philadelphia Water Department and Partnership for the Delaware Estuary with assistance from the Boozy Mutt. \nThe Partnership for the Delaware Estuary is committed to providing equal access to information about its programs\, events and activities\, including document translation services for all individuals.
