DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an immersive art viewing and sound bath experience with Sound Therapy Practitioner + Recording Artist Luna Maye.\n\n\nAn early evening invitation to slow perception\, soften the nervous system\, and listen deeply. \n“Night Night” is a guided sound meditation and blue lotus tea ceremony held within Night\, Night\, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Branche Coverdale. This experience brings together fine art\, sound\, and ritual to support deep rest\, stress reduction\, and sleep readiness. \nSet among paintings that explore dreams\, out-of-body experiences\, and the quiet comforts of nighttime\, guests are invited to witness the exhibition while gently traveling inward. Image\, sound\, and sensation meet in a shared exploration of the conscious\, subconscious\, and unconscious material we often process through rest and sleep. \nThis is not a performance or a lecture. \nIt is an immersive\, deep-listening experience. \nA way of relating differently to art\, sound\, and rest. \nTHE EXPERIENCE\nThe evening unfolds in three movements: \n• Arrival + Artist Welcome\nGuests are welcomed into the gallery and invited to settle. The artist shares reflections from their lived experience with the work\, offering context and inspiration for deep looking and personal inquiry as the collection is witnessed. \n• Sound + Blue Lotus Tea Ceremony\nLuna Maye then invites guests into relationship with their individually served cup of blue lotus tea\, offering gentle context around its traditional uses and calming properties. Satin eye masks are provided to support sensory softening and inward focus. \nGuests are guided through a 60-minute seated sound meditation using neuroscience-informed frequencies\, harmonics\, and overtones designed to support nervous system down-regulation\, stress relief\, and sleep preparation. Artist Danielle Clough will teach a small class her secret techniques to sew without fabric\, as seen in her series What a Racket\, which she has been building for 9 years. \nYou will learn to stitch on alternative surfaces. This workshop builds confidence in thinking outside of the pattern and material. Participants will explore colour through a variety of value and palette exercises. This will be followed by Stitch Play\, which includes colour blending and creating dimension and texture with thread. \nBy the end of the workshop\, participants discover their voice in colour while building skills to continue creating unique designs. Learn to embrace your creative voice while becoming more playful in finding unique surfaces for stitching. \nSkill level:This is an intermediate workshop on embroidery and materials. A general understanding of basic embroidery is helpful. \nWhat will be provided?Each person will receive an embroidery kit and Danielle will provide threads\, fabric\, pens\, pencils and other goodies she thinks you may need. There is no rush with embroidery\, so your bespoke take-home kit means you can keep the sewing going. \nWhat do I need to bring?Bring your phone! We will use this and explore how your everyday tool can help your creative process. If you have your favourite pencil or pens\, bring them along too! Picking up themes from mixed media artist Kelly Kozma’s acclaimed solo exhibition Watch Me Backflip\, we will get an inside experience of the artist’s process and explore our own creative intuition through guided meditation led by mindfulness teacher Gloria Shepard. \nDoors Open at 6:30 PM \n7:00 PM– Attendees arrive at the gallery and have 30 min to explore the gallery floors and to hear directly from the artist\, Kelly Kozma\, about her solo exhibition and massive installation. \n7:30 PM – Attendees gather on the first floor for brief introductions and a Centering Meditation led by Gloria Shepard. \nDuring the workshop we will: \nShare: \nAttendees will bring a photo or piece of ephemera representing a time of joy or comfort. We will connect with ourselves and each other by sharing about what we’ve brought\, and then sit with Kelly’s question– “What if I told you I believe in you?” \nCreate: \nUsing punched paper circles\, provided by Kelly\, and a 12” wood circle panel\, we will play with colors and patterns\, contemplating the questions\, “What if I told you I believe in you? What would you make\, create\, put out into the world?” Inspired by Kelly’s process\, questions\, by what bubbles up in us as we connect with the art around us\, and by the inner creativity arising within us\, we will each create our own temporary mandala-like piece on the panel. Afterwards\, we will share panels over tea and snacks with the opportunity to take pictures and connect with each other. \nWe will close the evening with another meditation led by Gloria\, then clear our temporary creations and take our panels and chosen punched circles home. Ecology\, experiential education\, classroom teaching\, mindfulness\, meditation\, emotional education and support\, parenting\, transformative work\, shadow work\, astrology\, and family constellations are some of the layers. Formal training\, studying with teachers and mentors\, books\, talks\, and retreats have given her a path. Many years of actually walking the path\, practicing and integrating the teachings through direct experience and trial and error\, have brought the teachings to life. \nABOUT KELLY KOZMAKelly Kozma is a mixed-media and fiber artist who uses the meditative process of hand embroidery as a therapeutic way of healing. SUMMARY:Parfleche Painting Workshop with Danielle SeeWalker
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an accessible workshop painting parfleche pieces for earrings or a keychain led by Lakota artist Danielle SeeWalker.\n\n\nAn introductory course led by Húŋkpapȟa Lakȟóta artist and muralist Danielle Seewalker. During this workshop on the 2nd Floor of the Paradigm Arts Building\, attendees will learn about the patterns and techniques used in parfleche painting. At the end of the workshop\, attendees will walk away with custom earrings or a keychain made from parfleche (painted rawhide). \nNo experience is needed. All skill levels are welcome. All materials will be provided. \nThere will be two sessions for the workshops. We are offering early bird pricing to the first 5 people who sign up for each session. \nFirst Session: Saturday\, December 7th · 12:00pm – 2:00pm \nSecond Session: Saturday\, December 7th · 3:00pm – 5:00pm \nThe name “parfleche” was initially used by French fur traders and derives from the French language parer meaning “to parry” or “to defend”\, and flèche meaning “arrow”. “Parfleche” was used to describe tough rawhide shields carried by Plains Indian warriors but was later used primarily for decorated rawhide containers. Plains Indian tribes often had an abundant source of hides in the buffalo they hunted\, but\, as they were nomadic\, they had little opportunity to tan the skins. Parfleche\, or rawhide\, was prepared by cleaning and dehairing the skin and then by stretching it and allowing it to dry in the sun. This process created a stiff but durable leather that was used for many items\, including bags\, boxes\, envelopes\, and war shields. Designs historically consisted of geometric shapes and symbols in primary colors. \nToday\, many contemporary Plains Indian artists evolved the idea of parfleche by making earrings\, bracelets\, wallets\, etc (examples below). \nThis event will accompany Danielle SeeWalker’s featured collection\, which will be on display throughout the month of December. \nAbout Danielle SeeWalkerDanielle SeeWalker is Húŋkpapȟa Lakȟóta and citizen of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe in North Dakota. She is a fine artist\, muralist\, writer\, activist\, and boymom of two\, based in Denver\, Colorado. Her visual artwork often incorporates the use of mixed media and experimentation while incorporating traditional Native American materials\, scenes\, and messaging. Her artwork pays homage to her identity as a Lakȟóta wíŋyaŋ (woman) and her passion to redirect the narrative to an accurate and insightful representation of contemporary Native America while still acknowledging historical events. \nAbout Paradigm Gallery + StudioParadigm Gallery + Studio® was established in 2010 by co-founders and curators\, Jason Chen and Sara McCorriston. The gallery exhibits meaningful\, process-intense contemporary artwork by emerging and mid-career artists from around the world. In 2022\, Paradigm announced the opening of its new 5-story\, 7\,000 sq. ft. home\, The Paradigm Arts Building\, in Old City\, Philadelphia. Now open to the public\, the building boasts multiple floors of exhibition space\, integrated in-house design and printmaking\, a dedicated events floor\, and art advisory offices. DESCRIPTION:Please join us for First Friday to celebrate new releases from over 8 artists  and view/collect on all gallery floors.\n\n\nParadigm Gallery + Studio is pleased to present three distinct collections championing craft and reinvention for CraftNOW 2024. Artists Ulla-Stina Wikander\, Yoonmi Nam\, and Andrew Jeffrey Wright have spent many years honing in on their respective crafts that incorporate the use and repetition of found materials. In a time where new objects are constantly produced with diminishing relevance and single-use purpose\, we uplift unique methods of upcycling in art that recontextualizes material to expand on larger ideas of craftsmanship\, methods of production\, and the functionality of objects. Each artist creates artwork through layering of old and new construction\, bringing new life to past pieces and not letting matter go to waste. Theodore was awarded the prestigious PDN’s 30 New & Emerging Photographers to Watch (2019)\, the Getty Images / ARRAY ‘Where We Stand’ grant\, and a grant from the Knight Foundation for ‘A Dream Deferred’. Theodore was a two-time nominee for the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage Fellowship and a nominee for the Magnum Foundation Fund. He is an Associate Adjunct Professor at the University of the Arts\, a trustee of The Print Center\, a trustee of the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation\, and a former trustee of the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center. \nTheodore was announced as a two-time nominee of The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage Fellowship and a nominee of the Magnum Foundation Fund in 2018. In the following years 2019 and 2020\, he was awarded the PDN’s 30 New & Emerging Photographers to Watch and AI-AP American Photography 35. He has had several solo exhibitions and is included in several group exhibitions. SUMMARY:Tä:  Harmonious Dynamics with Goni Shifron and Uri Hershberg
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a presentation of a participatory art piece that combines art and science.\n\n\n“Tä” \nHarmonious Dynamics: Exploring Emergent Cooperation through Participatory Art and Brain Activity \n“Tä” is an art participatory piece that emerged from joint research between Goni Shifron (artist) and Uri Hershberg (scientist). A collaboration of art and science aiming to identify the moment when individual actions merge into adaptive group dynamics. In “Tä”\, we invite the audience to be part of an immersive experience of art and have unique access and contribution to scientific research. \nTä is for 12 participants. Following simple rules\, each individual will move pebbles between piles on a table and the group will together create the dynamics of the entire population. Participating in Tä reveals large questions about harmonious dynamics that each of us can relate to our own way of interpretation (symbolic\, geographic\, sociological\, and esthetic considerations). \nFor the next presentation of Tä we will for the first time\, give some of the participants special wireless wearable headbands which can be used to measure brain activity. She graduated from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in 2016. Across her own work and collaborations\, Goni explores intimate and universal stories through various mediums (installation\, performance\, photography). \nUri Hershberg is a Professor of Biology and the director of the Center for Biophysics and Quantitative Biology at the University of Haifa. He studies how complex living systems learn through interaction with their environments\, mostly\, but not always\, by studying the adaptive immune system. He tries in his research to create true stories about biology. \nHasan Ayaz is an Associate Professor at Drexel University School of Biomedical Engineering Science and Health Systems. His research is focused on unraveling the complexities of human brain functioning through mobile neuroimaging. He utilizes next-generation brain sensing technologies and neuro/physiological data analytic approaches with applications ranging from aerospace to healthcare. \nLuciano Perondi is a typeface\, graphic and game designer. He was appointed associate professor of Design at the IUAV Venice in 2018 and he is also a member of the Alpaca and Cast\, cooperatives of designers. Often within a theoretical approach\, his interests are focused on visual studies\, writing\, typography\, games and information design mostly in a design for all perspective. In particular he focuses on the empirical study of visual syntax\, also known as synsemia\, a foundational aspect of graphic design.

SUMMARY:Toy Stories: Artist Talk and Beaded Lizard Keychain Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an afternoon  tour of a new exhibition led by curator Anaïs Cooper-Hackman followed by an artist-led workshop.\n\n\nPlease join Paradigm Gallery + Studio at the Paradigm Arts Building (12 N. 3rd St) on Sunday\, August 25th at 12:00pm for a ticketed tour celebrating the debut solo exhibition of ceramacist Jeff Rubio\, Toy Stories. In partnership with local independent curator Anaïs Cooper-Hackman\, Toy Stories repurposes iconography like beaded key chains and board games from Rubio’s childhood as narrative instruments for storytelling and how they have shaped his professional and personal identities. Visitors will recognize iconic characters like Wario or “Street Sharks”\, and a weapon from Sailor Moon. \nVisitors will receive an intimate insight into the toybox of Jeff Rubio’s mind as he and the curator weave in the stories that are the foundation the exhibition. \nFollowing the tour will be an artist-led workshop where attendees can revert back to their childhood selves at camp and make classic beaded lizard keychains that inspired the ones on display in the exhibition. Through the workshop\, Rubio aims to bring forth the importance of community and creativity in his practice\, especially since he is fueled by his supportive circle of artistic friends and collaborators. \nArtist Talk tickets are free\, but reservations are required. All supplies are provided. \nAbout Jeff RubioJeff Rubio is a Filipino-American ceramicist based in Philadelphia. His practice employs playful motifs yet is highly technical\, and rooted in queerness\, nostalgia\, and joy.Rubio received his BID in Industrial Design from Pratt Institute in New York. He has been featured in group exhibitions at Huddle\, Philadelphia and Good Mother Gallery\, Los Angeles. \nAbout Anaïs Cooper-HackmanAnaïs Cooper-Hackman is a curator based in Philadelphia\, PA. She is the former Associate Director of the now defunct HOT•BED Gallery\, an art gallery\, event venue\, and artist studios in Philadelphia. Among many things\, during her time at HOT•BED she helped launch a concept called MICRO•GALLERY\, a no-limits playground for guest curators and artists to produce and exhibit unconventional work. The inaugural season of MICRO•GALLERY included a Venice Biennale of Architecture-bound installation by Jefferson University’s Synesthetic Research and Design Lab\, a community media lab for the production of experimental art in partnership with Lino Kino\, and an immersive neon cave installation by neon bender Alissa Eberle. Currently\, she is the Programming & Partnerships Director at Ray\, a multi-family real estate company with locations in Philadelphia\, PA; Harlem\, NY; and Phoenix\, AZ where she manages an in-house gallery concept called Studio 105. \nAbout Paradigm Gallery + StudioParadigm Gallery + Studio® was established in 2010 by co-founders and curators\, Jason Chen and Sara McCorriston. The gallery exhibits meaningful\, process-intense contemporary artwork by emerging and mid-career artists from around the world. In 2022\, Paradigm announced the opening of its new 5-story\, 7\,000 sq. ft. home\, The Paradigm Arts Building\, in Old City\, Philadelphia. Now open to the public\, the building boasts multiple floors of exhibition space\, integrated in-house design and printmaking\, a dedicated events floor\, and art advisory offices. With this\, Chen and McCorriston expanded their vision for the greater Philadelphia arts community. The gallery is at the heart of this vision\, anchoring Paradigm’s overall mission of increasing access to the commercial art world\, supporting artists and advancing their careers\, and collaborating with like-minded partners to build a more equitable\, sustainable arts economy for all.
