SUMMARY:Bodies and Souls
DESCRIPTION:“My concern is with humanity. I want to confront the viewer with life and with what we are doing to each other. I hope to awaken in the viewer a sense of compassion . . . without compassion there is nothing.”\n—Luis Cruz Azaceta \nBodies and Souls examines the liberatory power of figurative art. Though often treated as conservative in the second half of the 20th century\, artists used representational and realist methods to assert presence for those omitted from dominant narratives or harmfully depicted by those outside their communities. Realism and representation remain powerful means to show embodied human experience\, encompassing gender\, sexuality\, interpersonal relationships\, psychological states\, and connections to home. \nThese methods can help us imagine the world we want to live in. Representational art has been critical for artists who want to make themselves and their communities visible on their own terms. It provides the agency to see and be seen\, to show relationships\, pleasure\, and autonomy. Representing ourselves is a powerful means of celebrating our full humanity. \nThis is the throughline of an eclectic collection formed by Philadelphians Robert and Frances Coulborn Kohler. Bodies and Souls celebrates their devotion to artists and immense generosity towards PAFA. Featuring over 120 works given and promised to the museum\, the exhibition will examine prominent themes in the collection\, integrating artists who are often seen independently or as part of regional communities. \nBodies and Souls is presented concurrently with an exhibition of the same title featuring the Kohlers’ personal collection at Woodmere\, Charles Knox Smith Hall\, 9201 Germantown Ave. Bodies & Souls – Woodmere. \nFeatured Artwork: Rafael Ferrer (born 1933) El Bolero\, 1983–84. Oil on canvas; 60 × 72 in. © Rafael Ferrer\, courtesy of the artist \nThe exhibition will include works by Robert Arneson\, Luis Cruz Azaceta\, Joan Brown\, Roy DeForest\, Rafael Ferrer\, Viola Frey\, Gregory Gillespie\, Juan Gonzalez\, Red Grooms\, Anne Minich\, Gladys Nilsson\, Ed Paschke\, Christina Ramberg\, Winfred Rembert\, Tabitha Vevers\, John Wilde\, Didier William\, Karl Wirsum\, and many others.

SUMMARY:Kati Gegenheimer: We've Only Just Begun
DESCRIPTION:Rooted in painting but extending into architecture and social space\, the exhibition positions love not as a private or sentimental subject\, but as a serious aesthetic\, political\, and communal structure. \nTo reinaugurate the newly renovated Morris Gallery\, PAFA presents Kati Gegenheimer: We’ve Only Just Begun\, an immersive monographic exhibition exploring love–familial\, romantic\, or brotherly–at this moment of profound social division. Anchored by a symbol-laden painted musical score of the titular line from the Carpenters’ 1970 song\, the exhibition presents works surveying how love is a necessary choice to be cultivated\, measured\, sustained\, or dismissed\, over time. \nRooted in painting but extending into architecture and social space\, the exhibition positions love not as a private or sentimental subject\, but as a serious aesthetic\, political\, and communal structure. Gegenheimer’s markmaking\, symbolism\, and vibrant use of color reclaim emblems of care and tenderness (hearts\, love notes\, hinges\, calendars\, keyholes\, to-do lists)\, and ponder how love is practiced over time rather than experienced in a singular instance. In an era driven by speed\, extraction\, and instant gratification\, the exhibition insists on return and continuity. \nGegenheimer’s paintings are devoted expressions of love\, luck\, and time\, drawing inspiration from art history\, architecture\, popular culture\, and craft. Her works embrace the decorative and diaristic\, each an altar to a fleeting moment. Reliant on color\, tempo\, and composition\, each of her paintings is a sign\, symbol\, and record all at once.

SUMMARY:FRED WILSON: THE MASTER PLAN or In Between the Big Bang and Modern Art Is the Restroom
DESCRIPTION:THE MASTER PLAN or In Between the Big Bang and Modern Art Is the Restroom is a suite of twenty-two photogravures commissioned in 2004 by the Brodsky Center at PAFA and completed in 2009. They are on view for the first time at PAFA in the Works on Paper Gallery of the Historic Landmark Building\, for one year\, in conjunction with the exhibition A Nation of Artists. \nAs an artist living and working in New York City\, I had to support myself one way or another. Working simultaneously in the educational department of the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the American Museum of Natural History\, and the American Crafts Museum made me wonder about how the environment in which cultural production is placed affects the way the viewer feels about the artwork and the artist who made these things. \n—Fred Wilson \nThe prints reproduce floor outlines from visitor orientation maps of eighteen major art\, cultural\, and natural history museums in North America and Europe. The succession of diagrammatic images\, precisely etched in off-white and black inks\, encourage viewers to revisit memories of time spent in museums and recapture the sense of adventure sparked by picking up a map. \nAs one of the most influential American artists of this century\, Fred Wilson has set in motion a profound transformation prompting museums to reconsider how they engage viewers’ learning experiences through art and artifacts. Two hundred and fifty years after Charles Willson Peale (1741–1827) established the American museum at the nation’s birth as the destination for educational advancement—commemorated in his painting The Artist in His Museum (1822)\, on view in the rotunda—Wilson examines the consequential role museums have played since. \nWilson’s conceptual inquiry challenges museums as neutral repositories of knowledge. His groundbreaking 1992 installation at the Maryland Historical Society\, Mining the Museum\, exhumed omitted histories of colonized and enslaved people and shifted attention to the authority embedded in institutional architecture\, furniture\, labels\, and registration systems through his creative retooling of the display apparatus. His subsequent work in glass\, sculpture\, painting\, drawing\, and print addresses the cross-continental history central to the Black experience\, including themes of race\, diaspora\, liberation\, and mourning.

SUMMARY:Printmaking By The People Exhibition Opening
DESCRIPTION:Participants in workshops around the city created their own art to express their ideas about the rights that are crucial for a just society.\n\n\nMural Arts Philadelphia and the Free Library of Philadelphia present Printmaking by the People: Posters for a Reimagined Declaration of Independence\, an exhibition of hundreds of posters created by Philadelphians who were asked to share their visions of “life\, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” This special exhibition is part of Printmaking by the People\, Philadelphia’s largest 2026 public art and community engagement project inspired by the 250th anniversary of the country’s founding. \nPrintmaking by the People opens at the Parkway Central Library’s Heim Center for Civic and Cultural Engagement on Thursday\, April 16\, with a free opening reception from 5:30–7:30 pm\, and runs through August 2026. Bressi (Public Art Project Specialist\, Mural Arts Philadelphia)\, Suzanna Urminska (Curator of Exhibitions\, Free Library of Philadelphia)\, and David K. Coleman Jr. (Exhibition Designer and Curatorial Advisor). These workshops were led by more than 30 local artists working in a range of printmaking techniques. \nPrintmaking by the People is made possible by the Philadelphia Funder Collaborative for the Semiquincentennial and the City of Philadelphia\, with lead partners Free Library of Philadelphia and Visit Philadelphia. \nComplete lists of project partners\, artists\, advisors\, and workshop host organizations can be found at the Printmaking by the People project page.

SUMMARY:Live Music and Economic Development
DESCRIPTION:A conversation on how live music fuels local economies—bringing together musicians\, venues\, and businesses shaping the Philly scene.\n\n\nLive music is more than entertainment — it’s a driver of local economies. \nAcross major cities\, vibrant music scenes support tourism\, activate restaurants and cafés\, sustain performance venues\, and generate income for artists\, educators\, and cultural workers. When supported intentionally\, live performance becomes not just cultural expression but a vital part of a city’s business ecosystem. \nThis Third Thursday conversation will explore how live music functions as both creative practice and economic strategy. The discussion will look at how musicians build sustainable careers\, how organizers and institutions support the field\, and how businesses — from clubs and cafés to hospitality spaces — can successfully integrate live performance into their programming. \nWhile the conversation will include perspectives from jazz practitioners\, the focus is broader: understanding how local music ecosystems form\, how opportunities are created\, and how cities benefit when musicians and venues are able to thrive. \nThis event is designed not only for musicians and cultural workers\, but also for restaurateurs\, venue managers\, and entrepreneurs interested in incorporating live music into their spaces\, strengthening their audience base\, and positioning their venues within the city’s cultural landscape. \nProduced in partnership with the Philadelphia Department of Commerce\, this gathering brings together practitioners\, business leaders\, and community members to examine how live music contributes to the vitality of Philadelphia’s cultural and nighttime economy.

SUMMARY:Uncle Bobbie's X Brian Jones - "Black History is for Everyone" Book Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we welcome educator and scholar\, Brian Jones to discuss his latest book “Black History is for Everyone”.\n\n\nBlack history IS American history and is for EVERYONE. \nEducator\, scholar and author\, Brian Jones will be at Uncle Bobbie’s to discuss his latest book\, Black History is for Everyone. \nWith Black history under attack from many fronts\, it’s never been more important to read\, engage with and share the works being written by our truth-tellers. This will be an excellent opportunity to learn and discuss race\, politics\, culture and how Blackness is an undeniable part of it all. \nBrian will be in conversation with fellow educator and writer\, Ismael Jimenez. \nBook signing will follow the discussion and Q&A. \nAll attendees can enjoy a 15% off in-store discount on your entire order during the event. \nDon’t miss this! \n****** \nAbout the Book: \nA longtime educator explores how the study of Black history challenges our understanding of race\, nation\, and the stories we tell about who we are. \nBlack history is under attack from powerful forces that seek to excise it from classrooms\, libraries\, and the popular imagination. Yet its opponents fail to understand a simple truth: the best education challenges our assumptions\, helps us see larger forces at work\, and gives us glimpses of alternate futures. \nIn Black History Is for Everyone\, Brian Jones offers a meditation on the power of Black history\, using his own experiences as a lifelong learner and classroom teacher to question everything—from the radicalism of the American Revolution to the meaning of “race” and “nation.” \nWith warmth and immersive storytelling\, Jones encourages us to delve deeper into our collective history\, explores how curiosity about our world is essential—and reminds us that with stakes so high\, the effort is worth it. \n \nAbout the Author: \nBrian Jones has taught many ages and grades in New York City’s public schools and the City University of New York. He served as the inaugural director of the Center for Educators and Schools at the New York Public Library and was the associate director of education at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. The author of The Tuskegee Student Uprising: A History\, his writing has also appeared in The New York Times\, Guardian\, and Jacobin. \nAbout the moderator: \nIsmael Jimenez is an educational leader\, writer\, and public scholar whose work is guided by the belief that education is the practice of freedom. His leadership emphasizes culturally relevant pedagogy\, civic literacy\, and the integration of Africana Studies into the core of public education. \nIn addition to leadership in public education\, Jimenez has contributed essays to Education Post\, EdWeek\, 7th Ward\, and other platforms\, amplifying the role of history and civic learning in shaping democratic possibility. He has partnered with cultural institutions including the Center for Black Educator Development and the Philadelphia Writing Project\, advancing initiatives that connect classrooms to community history and civic action. \nJimenez’s career reflects a consistent vision: to ensure that students and teachers encounter education not as rote compliance but as an invitation to inquiry\, truth-telling\, and transformation. He is frequently sought after for his insights on social studies\, Black history\, and education policy\, and he continues to expand his public voice through writing\, lectures\, and community-based programming. \n… \nDoors open at 6:30pm. \nAll tickets are non-refundable. \nStreet parking available. \nChildren older than 5-years old need a ticket for entry.
