SUMMARY:Historical Society of Frankford Special Event
DESCRIPTION:The Historical Society of Frankford (HSF) is pleased to host Mural Arts Philadelphia and the Tacony LAB Community Art Center Northeast 250: Threads of History community arts project on Tuesday\, March 31 at 6:00 PM at the Society’s library/museum at 1507 Orthodox St\, Philadelphia.\nThis project\, part of the City’s US Semiquincentennial celebrations\, will shine spotlights at several venues on the history of Northeast Philadelphia and the many small organizations that keep that history alive. Using the US flag as the organizing principle and creative inspiration\, hands-on artmaking activities at each event will engage communities with the idea of individual expression in flags. Participants will have an opportunity to create an artwork to keep.\nThe Frankford event will also feature an exhibit of artifacts and documents from the HSF collection related to Betsy Ross\, the woman often portrayed as the creator of the flag\, and her relatives in Northeast Philly who preserved and promoted her life story\, as well as a short presentation.\nThis event is free and open to the public. Off street parking will be available across Orthodox Street at the Frankford Friends School. Light refreshments will be available.

SUMMARY:Njideka Akunyili Crosby’s The Beautyful Ones Mural Dedication
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 4 | 12–4 pm | 5547 Chester Ave\, Philadelphia \nJoin us for a massive afternoon block party\, celebrating Njideka Akunyili Crosby’s new mural in the heart of the city’s Africatown neighborhood. Mural Arts and the Philadelphia Museum of Art have collaborated to bring the internationally renowned artist to Philadelphia to recreate her artwork\, The Beautyful Ones Series #1c\, as her first permanent public art installation. \nIn her methodically layered compositions\, Crosby combines painted depictions of people\, places\, and subjects from her life with photographic transfers derived from her personal image archive\, Nigerian magazines\, and other mass media sources. The resulting works are visual tapestries that bring to life the personal and social dimensions of contemporary life while powerfully expressing the complexities of African diasporic identity. \nThis Saturday afternoon event is open to the public\, with free water ice and refreshments\, live African dance and drum performances\, spirited DJ sets\, and Henna painting\, tote bag airbrushing\, and other art activations.

SUMMARY:The Power of the Haudenosaunee "Words Before All Else"
DESCRIPTION:Learn the history\, present\, and future of the Haudenosaunee Thanksgiving Address\, and how it informs Indigenous worldviews & movements\n\n\nComposed in about 1050 CE\, the Haudenosaunee Thanksgiving Address\, or “Words Before All Else”\, united five warring American Indian tribes\, and served as the inspiration for both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. For Americans\, it as a new orientation to being human\, as it describes the Haudenosaunee relationship to the natural world\, whose principles are generally accepted and shared by all North American Native people. Reflected in the mural\, this ancient document is still aspirational and deeply moving for us today in 2024. Workshop participants will learn about the history of the address and discuss its context to their personal lives and movements. Each presenter will then demonstrate the social dancing that is customary for their nation in celebration like this one. \n \nThe Climate Justice Initiative is a collaboration between front-line organizers\, activists\, and artists\, convened by Mural Arts Philadelphia. We use the power of public art to tell stories about the causes\, effects\, and solutions to the climate crisis in Lenapehoking (the greater Philadelphia region). SUMMARY:Climate Justice Mural Dedication!
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate our region’s newest\, largest\, and most ambitious public artwork about the causes of\, and solutions to\, the climate crisis!\n\n\nThe climate crisis can be overwhelming. How can we deal with all of our complicated feelings? What kinds of actions can we take\, individually and collectively\, to make a difference? And what is the role of art in supporting movements for climate justice? \nIn 2020\, Mural Arts Philadelphia convened a group of two dozen artists\, activists\, and organizers from across Lenapehoking (the original homelands of the Lenape people) to tackle these enormous questions. The result is a brand-new\, 400-foot-long mural showing the past\, present\, and future of climate justice (and injustice) in our communities and across the region. \nOn Saturday\, October 7\, as part of Mural Arts Month and in celebration of Indigenous People’s Day\, we will gather at the site of the new mural (1800 N. American St) to celebrate\, to mourn\, and to plan our next steps together. Hear from project collaborators about their connection to this artwork\, with a special focus on leaders and organizers from Black and Indigenous communities. Special musical guest PhilHarmonia choir will perform selections from the new work Elegy For the Earth\, by Philadelphia-area composer Adam B. Silverman.
