SUMMARY:"clay practice" by Shannon Brooks
DESCRIPTION:Join Leeway x Fleisher 2023 Artist-in-Residence Shannon Brooks for a durational\, immersive performance and installation experience.\n\n\n“clay practice; and when it lands\, will my eyes be closed or open?” is an immersive experience somewhere between a practice\, a performance\, and an evolving installation. \nclay practice uses improvised movement and sound to collectively build evolving\, wearable “memory-landscapes” from materials used and created through Shannon’s Leeway x Fleisher residency including clay\, ceramic objects\, and textiles. \nA ritual engagement with our senses\, clay practice decentralizes sight as our primary means of experience and reaches into touch\, sound\, and memory to blur the lines between and expand our sensorial cosmos. This experience invites rest\, what is missing\, mistakes\, twisted insides\, and the unfinished. Together we will conjure real and unreal realities to create the impossible and cavort with our uncertain futures. \nclay practice is influenced by Shannon’s personal experiences with low-vision/blindness\, neurodivergence and chronic illness \, as well as the relationships between work\, care\, queerness\, and space/time. \nTime stretches until it overlaps. The space is alive. Bodies erode into gravity. Maybe becoming a memory or a dream. \nHOW DO I PARTICIPATE?\nclay practice is arranged into two fragments of “time.” Visitors are in control over how they experience clay practice and may come and go as they please. \n12-2pm // Time Fragment #1: \n\nVisitors are invited to participate in an open practice exploring movement\, sound\, and material facilitated by Shannon Brooks to create personal “memory-landscapes.” All movement levels\, bodies\, ages\, and genders are welcome to participate.\n\n2-3pm // Intentional rest and reflection \n3-5pm // Time Fragment #2: \n\nVisitors are invited to witness an improvised “performance” further interacting with the “memory-landscape.”\nVisitors may witness the performance as a “relaxed performance” and are invited to get comfortable and tend to their emerging needs.\nVisitors may be invited into the performance space by Shannon or a collaborating artist and will have the choice to participate.\n\n \nEVENT ACCESSIBILITY\n\nShannon and collaborators will use self-audio description when possible.\nVarious types of seating will be provided.\nMasks and rapid testing are strongly encouraged. Masks will be provided onsite.\nContent Warnings: Practice/performance may engage in themes of disability\, c-ptsd\, neurodivergence\, and ableism\, as well as contain content visitors find sensitive\, such as coarse language and brief nudity. The performance and installation space will contain light and sound changes throughout the experiment. There may be loud sound during portions of the performance and ear plugs will be available at the front desk.\n\n \nVENUE ACCESSIBLITY\nThe session will take place on the first floor of Fleisher Art Memorial\, an ADA accessible space. There are five steps to enter the building\, which is wheelchair accessible through use of a chair lift. The session will take place in the Sanctuary\, approximately 45 feet away from the main entrance and down 2-3 steps into and across the gallery space. A wheelchair ramp is also available to access the Sanctuary. There are gender neutral restrooms in the lobby near the main entrance. Fleisher offers free parking in the lot across the street\, and includes designated accessible parking spaces. The sidewalk surface varies and there is a curb cut at the corner of 7th and Catharine. \n \nABOUT THE LEEWAY x FLEISHER ARTIST RESIDENCY\nEstablished in 2019\, the Leeway x Fleisher Visual Artist Residency is an opportunity for a Leeway grantee to utilize Fleisher’s art-making studios and facilities as one of the oldest community art-schools in the country. The Artist-in-Residence receives a $2\,500 stipend from Leeway and access to Fleisher’s space to create their work. Learn more about Fleisher and Leeway.

SUMMARY:clay practice; terrestrial-touch with Shannon Brooks
DESCRIPTION:Join Leeway x Fleisher 2023 Artist in Residence Shannon Brooks for a workshop exploring movement\, sound\, material\, and wearable ceramics.\n\n\nJoin Shannon Brooks\, Leeway x Fleisher 2023 Artist in Residence for a community workshop!\nSomewhere between a movement/sound practice\, a loose experiment in past/future/interdimensional archiving\, and a ceramic workshop\, clay practice; terrestrial-touch invites participants into a collaborative practice using movement\, sound\, and material (clay) to create wearable\, ceramic memory-landscapes. \n\n12-1:15pm: In the first part of this workshop\, Shannon will guide participants through guided movement/sound improvisations to connect with our bodies\, environment\, and each other. Together\, we will root into each of our personal and collective subterranean-archives\, our real and unreal histories\, dreams\, and futures.\n1:15-1:45pm: 30-minute break.\n1:45-3pm: In the second part of the workshop\, we will translate these explorations physically into clay with our bodies\, imprinting this sensory information as a topographical archive of textures using our full bodies (hands\, feet\, knees\, elbows\, etc.). The workshop will culminate by working our surreal forms into structurally sound\, wearable objects meant to be touched\, moved with\, and worn.\n\nBy joining this workshop\, attendees are contributing to a large-scale\, collaborative\, artwork that will be a part of Shannon’s Leeway x Fleisher Visual Artist Residency final exhibition. Participants will have their wearable creations fired\, glazed and worked into a sculptural\, memory-landscape that evolves and is interacted with over the duration of the exhibition. At the conclusion of the exhibition\, participants will be able to take home their finished pieces. \nThis workshop is adaptable to any body\, mind\, age\, gender\, etc. No dance/movement experience is necessary to participate! Shannon is deeply influenced by the work of Disability Justice leaders and understands pain\, Disability\, and Access as generative\, creative forces that transform time\, space\, and power structures. This practice is deeply influenced by personal experiences with low-vision/blindness\, madness\, and chronic illness. \nLearn more about Shannon’s 2023 Leeway x Fleisher residency here. \nVENUE ACCESSIBILITY\nThe workshop will take place in Palumbo Park\, right next door to Fleisher\, accessible by a ramp. After the hike\, participants will stop at a comfortable location to explore and practice self-portraiture\, either solo or in pairs/groups\, using elements from the natural world. \nPlease note that this space is welcome to all folks and please be aware that this is a BIPOC sacred space and we will be centering the Black experience.

SUMMARY:Decades of Funding Trans Artists: Denise Brown\, Gabriel Foster & V Chaudry
DESCRIPTION:Two Decades of Funding Trans Artists: A Conversation with Denise Brown and Gabriel Foster\, moderated by V Varun Chaudry\n\n\nTwo Decades of Funding Trans Artists: A Conversation with Denise Brown and Gabriel Foster\, moderated by V Varun Chaudry \nJune 4 at 6 pm ET (via Zoom) \nJoin us for a conversation with Denise Brown\, Gabriel Foster and V Varun Chaudhry on funding transgender artists. In 2005\, the Leeway Foundation expanded its grant funding to artists who identified as trans. After almost twenty years\, we look back at Leeway’s decisions\, strategy\, processes\, and impact on philanthropy and nonprofits. The three will also discuss how this work evolved over the years\, what is still needed\, and what’s next. \n__________________________________________________________________________________________________________ \nDenise M. Brown (she/her) is a cultural organizer and strategist\, coach\, and facilitator who is passionate about using her skills and energies on creating\, supporting\, and illuminating work at the intersections of art\, culture and social justice and working intergenerationally to support the development of young leaders. She is the Executive Director of the Leeway Foundation\, an organization whose mission is to support women and trans* artists and cultural producers creating art for social change. For over 30+ years\, Denise has worked with cultural and social justice organizations\, individual donors\, and foundations like the ArtPlace/Philadelphia Assembly\, Grantmakers in the Arts\, Philanthropy Network Greater Philadelphia\, Rauschenberg Foundation\, and Surdna Foundation on program development and grantmaking strategies regionally and nationally. She currently serves on the boards of the Henrietta Wurts Memorial Fund of the Philadelphia Foundation and Scribe Video Center\, a Philadelphia-based media arts organization. \n*Leeway is a trans-affirming organization committed to gender self-determination\, and we use the term “trans” in its most inclusive sense\, as an umbrella term encompassing transsexual\, transgender\, genderqueer\, Two-Spirit people\, and anyone whose gender identity or gender expression is nonconforming and/or different from their gender assigned at birth. \n \nGabriel Foster is a black\, queer\, trans “momma’s boy\,” is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Trans Justice Funding Project. \nGabriel has had the opportunity to work with brilliant leaders\, mentors\, and community members while working at The American Friends Service Committee’s GLBTQ Youth Program and the Northwest Network of Bisexual\, Trans\, Lesbian\, and Gay Survivors of Abuse (WA) in Seattle\, WA; the Leeway Foundation in Philadelphia; SPARK Reproductive Justice Now in Atlanta\, GA and the Sylvia Rivera Law Project in New York. \nWhile always on a life learning curve\, Foster often finds himself daydreaming scheming about creative collaborations rooted in liberatory visions. And making really\, really hilarious memes. \n \nV Varun Chaudhry is a critical ethnographer with research investments in transgender studies\, queer of color critique\, and Black feminist theory. They are currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Women’s\, Gender\, and Sexuality Studies at Brandeis University and a Senior Fellow with the Center for Applied Transgender Studies. V’s academic research has been published or is forthcoming in GLQ\, Transgender Studies Quarterly\, Signs\, differences\, Feminist Anthropology\, and Feminist Theory. \nV is also the author of several reports and guides on LGBTQ and trans inclusion\, including Transforming Inclusion: An Organizational Guide (published by the Leeway Foundation in 2018)\, Out in Research: A Guide to LGBTQ Market Research (published by Suzy\, Inc. in 2021)\, Funding Trans Resilience (published by the Gender \nJustice Fund in Philadelphia in 2022)\, and a forthcoming ten-year retrospective from the Trans Justice Funding Project. V has also served as a racial and gender justice consultant for a number of nonprofit organizations\, including Transponder Eugene\, Girls Rock Philly\, and Bread and Roses Community Fund. \nV is currently working on their manuscript\, Transcraft: Pedagogies of World-Building\, which ethnographically maps the counterintuitive and strategic ways that trans and gender-nonconforming people of color and their allies world-build in\, through\, and against nonprofit and funding agencies in Philadelphia and the United States more broadly. V is the recipient of a Career Enhancement Fellowship from the Institute for Citizens and Scholars. \n \nThis event is co-sponsored by the Trans Justice Funding Project
