SUMMARY:Climate Anxiety Dance Party
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to the first ever CLIMATE ANXIETY DANCE PARTY\, where you are welcome to thrash and groove in all sorts of socially unacceptable ways. The International Panel on Climate Change has told us that we need to hit peak emissions by the year 2025. That’s this year!! Wait\, it gets better. We have 5 years left until we need to halve emissions from 2019 levels. Do these facts give you feelings?! Take a moment to notice that emotion contains the word motion. We are moved by our emotions and can also move and transform them by moving our bodies. It’s true! Stress has tangible effects. We can get stuck in a flight or fight mode. Engaging our bodies activates the parasympathetic nervous system\, allows us to complete the stress response\, and unclench the energy we need to move the world. CLIMATE ANXIETY DANCE PARTY is part experimental dance class\, part somatic therapy\, and part ceremony with a backbeat for world transformation. Come dressed comfortably\, come ready to share a messy smorgasbord of feelings\, and come ready to shake it all loose. \n\n\nLOCATION\nDiscovery Center\,

SUMMARY:Weaving with Teri
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to make a pine needle basket from start to finish with Teri Hislop\, master craft artist and clan mother of the Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania. These baskets can be crafted from foraged pine needles. The art of weaving them has been carried by indigenous people for millennia\, passed down from one generation to the next. Weaving is not just a practical activity\, but an active meditation that imparts good medicine to the spirt\, and is a wonderful way to pass the time through the dark winter months. Tickets include the cost of materials which will be provided. We look forward to weaving with you! \n\n\nLOCATION\nThe Discovery Center\,

SUMMARY:Native Seed Saving
DESCRIPTION:Join naturalist Anisa George in gathering seeds from some of the many native plants that can be found in the South Philly Meadows at FDR Park. You can bring home seeds for your own pots and gardens or gather for LandHealth who will cultivate them at our native plant nursery for propagating throughout the city. \nWe will walk a 2 mile loop. All ages are welcome. Please bring your own water bottle and dress for the weather and to protect yourself from poison ivy (also a native plant!) exposure. \nLOCATION\nFDR Park\, Pickle Ball Courts\, Delaware Expy\, Philadelphia\, PA\, 19145

SUMMARY:Catch A Swoop of Swifts
DESCRIPTION:Though there are several swifts native to North America only one can be spotted east of the Rocky Mountains – the chimney swift (Chaetura pelagica). In Philadelphia they can be spotted by the hundreds diving into our chimneys during the fall migration. If you can find the right chimney\, this nightly descent is truly a wonder to behold. Join bird-enthusiast and nature guide Anisa George in learning more about this soot colored world traveler some people like to describe as a cigar with wings. We’ll meet up for a bowl of veggie chilli at a Germantown community park\, learn a bit about the bird\, then take a ten minute walk to a primary roosting chimney at dusk to see the wondrous swoop of swifts.

SUMMARY:FOREST BATHING AT SHOFUSO HOUSE
DESCRIPTION:Bathe in the autumnal beauty of a masterfully designed Japanese garden in the heart of Fairmount Park with a certified forest therapy guide. \nWhat will we do?\nForest Therapy\, also known as “Shinrin-Yoku\,” refers to the practice of spending time in forested areas for the purpose of enhancing health\, happiness\, and a sense of awe. The Japanese words translate into English as “Forest Bathing” and refers to bathing in the beneficial compounds which trees emit\, such as oxygen and phytoncides. \nWhy do I need a guide?\nWhile it’s true that no one needs a guide to benefit from a walk in the natural world\, a nature therapy guide can help unlock the door to new connection and intimacy with the environment by facilitating a series of invitations that cultivate presence\, calm\, and profound joy. Guides also create opportunities for people to connect with each other\, to witness and be witnessed in their process of discovery.
