SUMMARY:Habitat Advocate: Qigong - Mindful Movement for Gardeners
DESCRIPTION:Explore mindful movement to tend to your best habitat restoration tool – your human body!\n\n\nWhether you are seeking gentle warm-ups to prevent injury or meditative motions to connect to the spaces you steward\, Qigong offers a way to easefully warm\, transform\, and activate energy in your body. \nParticipants will explore the philosophy of Qigong\, a practice developed in China thousands of years ago\, and practice mindful movement forms in a group setting as insight for later personal practice. Please wear comfortable clothing for gentle movement. \n \nThe Lancaster Conservancy has protected over 11\,000 acres of natural lands\, which are critically important to supporting biodiversity. Smaller patches of native habitats spread throughout urban landscapes are also essential to creating corridors of habitat – food and refuge – for wildlife. This is why we are offering our Habitat Advocate classes at Tec Centro in Lancaster City. \nThe cost of the Habitat Advocate classes covers instructor fees. If the cost of this class is prohibitive\, please reach out to Keith Williams\, VP of Engagement and Education\, at kwilliams@lancasterconservancy.org. \n \nYour Presenter\nElyse Jurgen\, M.Ed\, CBLP\, CERP\, owner of Waxwing EcoWorks Co.\, is a community collaborator inspired by rebuilding ecological literacy and biodiversity with her team of ecological practitioners. SUMMARY:Nature Hour: Discovering Our Spring Ephemeral Wildflowers
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this virtual presentation to learn all about these natural beauties that light up our woods in the springtime!\n\n\nAbout the Presentation\nSpring ephemeral wildflowers bloom in early spring before the forest canopy leafs out as part of their strategy to capitalize on sunlight availability. They do all of their growing and reproduction during the time when sunlight reaches the forest floor\, which is an ingenious survival and reproduction strategy. In the process\, they create beautiful landscapes of color that we get to enjoy! This presentation will explore the magical world of spring ephemeral wildflowers\, examine their survival and reproductive strategy\, and provide tips to identify our most common beauties. \n \nAbout Your Presenter\nKeith Williams is the Vice President of Engagement and Education for Lancaster Conservancy. Keith is an environmental educator\, naturalist\, writer\, and photographer. He has a BS in Environmental Biology from Kutztown University and MS in Ecological Teaching and Learning from the Lesley University Audubon Expedition Institute. SUMMARY:Nature Hour: Butterfly Persistence in the Face of Human Influence
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this virtual presentation on current research about the effects of ecosystem changes on pollinators.\n\n\nAbout the Presentation\nWe live in a time of unprecedented human influence\, where climate change and biodiversity loss are reshaping ecosystems worldwide. Pollinators are among the most affected\, with their decline threatening both the stability of ecosystems and human food supply. Through the stories of the cabbage white butterfly\, an invasive species that flourishes in cities\, and the great spangled fritillary\, a native species potentially threatened by habitat loss\, this presentation will offer insights into the future of butterflies in a changing world. We will explore questions such as: Which species can survive\, and even thrive\, in this human-dominated world? What traits give them an advantage\, and what happens to the species that lack those traits? \n \nAbout Your Presenter\nKatie McManus is a 5th year PhD candidate at Temple University in the Spigler lab where her dissertation research focuses on the response of butterflies to human land use. She has a BS in Biology from University of Scranton. Before her PhD\, Katie researched the effects of climate change on plant physiology at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the impacts of agriculture on milkweed health for monarch conservation at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. \n \nAbout Nature Hour\nNature Hour is a lecture series presented by Lancaster Conservancy\, taking place on Thursdays throughout the winter. The one-hour virtual lectures\, which include a Q&A with the expert presenter\, cover a wide range of conservation\, environmental\, and nature-related topics impacting our community\, region\, and world to an audience of all ages of learners. \nTo find out about other events in the series please follow this link: Nature Hour Collection 2025/2026 \nTo see recordings of past Nature Hour lectures\, please visit the Conservancy’s YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@LancasterConservancy \n\n\nThank you to our incredible Annual Sponsors for their generous support!

SUMMARY:Nature Hour: How to Love a Forest
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this virtual presentation to learn about how to care for our forests and ecosystems at this moment in time.\n\n\nAbout the Presentation\nIn this talk\, Ethan Tapper\, a forester\, bestselling author and digital storyteller from Vermont\, will draw from his work as a forester and his book How to Love a Forest: The Bittersweet Work of Tending a Changing World to discuss what it means to care for forests and other ecosystems at this moment in time. How do we respond to the harmful legacies of the past? How do we use our species’ incredible power to heal rather than to harm? How do we reach toward a better future? In a time in which many believe that “protecting” ecosystems means protecting them from ourselves\, Ethan argues that humans must take action to help ecosystems heal and to move into a more abundant future\, and that to do so is an act of care and compassion – of love. \nEthan’s message is at once compassionate and pragmatic\, clear-eyed and hopeful\, sobering and inspiring – a powerful new vision for how we can build a world that works for all of its ecosystems and all of its people. \n \nAbout Your Presenter\nEthan Tapper is a forester\, digital storyteller\, and the bestselling author of How to Love a Forest: The Bittersweet Work of Tending a Changing World. For more than a decade\, Ethan has been recognized as a thought-leader in the world of ecosystem stewardship\, winning numerous regional and national awards for his work. More recently\, he has been recognized as a writer – since its publication in 2024\, How to Love a Forest has been named the winner of the 2025 New England Book Award for nonfiction and received international acclaim. \nEthan’s message of relationship\, responsibility and hope reaches millions of people each year through his writing\, social media channels with hundreds of thousands of followers\, and the hundreds of walks\, talks and keynotes that he delivers across North America each year. \nEthan works\, writes\, hunts\, birds and runs a small consulting forestry business from his home at Bear Island – his 175-acre working forest\, homestead\, orchard and sugarbush in Vermont – and plays in his punk band\, The Bubs.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for this virtual presentation about the history of the Conestoga River. Come find out what’s around the bend!\n\n\nAbout the Presentation\nThe Conestoga flows not only through our community\, but through time and through the imagination of many of us who love it. Anyone interested in the history of the Conestoga quickly becomes swept up in the incredible ways that it has been impacted by nearby habitation and the ways it has responded to those impacts. Through the many twists and turns of human influences\, we have responded over and over again with a deepening appreciation for the river’s magnificent beauty and intimate connection with nature. \nBen will take us on a journey through stories of the Conestoga that few have ever experienced. He will also share some astounding recent events of significant benefit to the environment and upcoming plans that could connect many more people with the Conestoga in the future. \n \nAbout Your Presenter\nBen Webber serves Lancaster Township as its municipal engineer. He grew up and resides in Manheim Township along the Conestoga River. As a civil engineer for four decades\, he has always been fascinated with water. SUMMARY:Habitat Advocate: Green Mulch - Using Native Plants as Groundcovers
DESCRIPTION:Kick the mulch habit! Learn how to integrate native groundcovers (“green” or “living” mulch) into your garden.\n\n\nDo you find yourself in a seasonal habit of spreading wood mulch in your garden beds to suppress weeds? In this interactive workshop\, learn how to kick that habit to the curb and instead nurture a new land ethic of cultivating a layered landscape by integrating native groundcovers (“green or living mulch”) in your garden. Through mimicking natural landscapes in your home garden\, you truly can experience the joys of stewarding your own mini nature preserve (don’t let anyone stop you from making your own DIY hiking trail too)! \nParticipants will practice a hands-on to-scale plant layering technique that they can use for future planning of their home landscape. \nThe Lancaster Conservancy has protected over 10\,000 acres of natural lands\, which are critically important to supporting biodiversity. SUMMARY:The Amazing Pawpaw at Tucquan Glen & Pyfer Nature Preserves
DESCRIPTION:Come explore the story of the pawpaw!\n\n\nGrowing from late September to early October\, pawpaw fruits have a brief life – so brief they don’t last long enough to make it to grocery store shelves. Thomas Jefferson was so enamored with the pawpaw that he’s said to have sent pawpaw seeds abroad to foreign dignitaries. \nNote: This is not a foraging event\, and we will not be picking pawpaws. We do not encourage foraging on Conservancy preserves. \nWhat to Expect: This will be a 3-mile moderate hike with some elevation changes and a stream crossing with a strong likelihood of getting wet. This event is recommended for ages 13 and up (participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult). There are no restrooms available on site. \nWhere to Meet: We will provide the parking location for this event via email directly to ticket holders two days before the event (please be sure to check your junk folder if the email doesn’t reach your inbox). The parking lot at Tucquan Glen & Pyfer Nature Preserves remains closed to the public. \nWhat to Bring: Bring water\, insect repellent\, snacks\, pertinent personal first aid\, and shoes that can get wet. Dress for the weather. Hiking poles may be useful. \nEvent Leader: Before joining the Interpretive Ranger team in 2023\, Kate Prisby partnered with Lancaster Conservancy in riparian buffer work at Climbers Run and building the new trail system at Tucquan Glen & Pyfer Nature Preserves. She enjoys sharing the amazing landscapes Lancaster Conservancy stewards with others. \nAnimal Policy: Service animals active or in training are welcome. Please leave all pets at home. \nRefund Policy: If you are unable to attend this event after purchasing a ticket\, refund requests must be made at least 48 hours before the event. \nCancellation Policy: This event will be held rain or shine\, with cancellation for severe weather made at the time of the event. SUMMARY:Nature Hour: Exploring our Emancipation Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this virtual presentation exploring the history of Lancaster Conservancy preserves associated with the Underground Railroad.\n\n\nAbout the Presentation\nLancaster Conservancy is committed to conserving landscapes that protect natural beauty and ecologically diverse communities. Many of our nature preserves protect cultural and heritage landscapes as well\, including routes and sites associated with the Underground Railroad. These stories may be hidden in the land\, streams and rivers\, and old roads that many of our trails follow\, and they need a keen eye and environmental history sleuthing to reveal. In this Nature Hour presentation\, we’ll explore the topographies of the Underground Railroad as it was used by Freedom Seekers\, abolitionists\, and fugitive slave law enforcers. We’ll learn how to experience our emancipation landscapes by featuring three of our preserves that connect directly to the story of the Underground Railroad and one of the most consequential periods in our nation’s history. \nThe Zoom link to join this presentation will be sent to attendees in the lead up to the event. \n \nAbout The Presenter\nPeggy Eppig is a Conservation Educator with Lancaster Conservancy. SUMMARY:Nature Hour: Sustaining Humans and Nature Together
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this hopeful virtual presentation on creating health for nature and humans!\n\n\nAbout the Presentation\nHow do we reignite the positive synergy between nature and humanity in a world where we so often hear how human action is having an irrevocable impact on the planet? This presentation will discuss how biodiversity continues to sustain our planet and all who inhabit it\, from the farthest reaches of wilderness to our own backyards in the built urban environment. By understanding and acting as better stewards of our relationships with species\, we can and will build a better planet that supports both humans and nature coexisting together. \n \nAbout The Presenter\nDr. Oswald Schmitz is the Oastler Professor of Population and Community Ecology\, in the Yale University School of the Environment. His research aims to make sense of nature’s complexity that comes from interdependencies among the variety of carnivore\, herbivore\, and plant species that coexist within ecosystems. These insights help to inform environmental stewardship to enhance the conservation of wildlife species and ensure the sustainability of ecosystems\, their functions\, and the services that they provide to humankind. At Yale\, he teaches courses on the role of humans in nature and how humans can develop the means to coexist harmoniously with nature. His book “The New Ecology: Rethinking a Science for the Anthropocene” encapsulates much of his thinking about species and ecosystems\, making ecological science accessible to a broader readership. \n \nAbout Nature Hour\nNature Hour is a lecture series presented by Lancaster Conservancy\, taking place throughout the winter. SUMMARY:Habitat Advocate: Invasive Species ID & Mitigation
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to observe nature through the lens of a habitat steward\, and learn how to ID invasive species.\n\n\nWhat native species are supporting wildlife\, and which introduced plant species require human action to restore the land for optimal ecological function? What methods does a habitat steward use to remove introduced plants? Students will receive the latest edition Invasive Plants of the Mid-Atlantic Field Guide. \nAll stewarding tools provided. Participants are responsible to provide their own sturdy shoes\, attire for mildly strenuous outdoor work\, sun/bug protection\, and refillable water bottle. You are welcome to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy after the class! \nThe Lancaster Conservancy has protected over 10\,000 acres of natural lands\, which are critically important to supporting biodiversity. Smaller patches of native habitats spread throughout urban landscapes are also essential to creating corridors of habitat – food and refuge – for wildlife. This is why we are offering our fall 2024 Habitat Advocate Certification program at Tec Centro in Lancaster City. \nThe cost of the Habitat Advocate classes covers instructor fees. If the cost of this class is prohibitive\, please reach out to Keith Williams\, VP of Engagement and Education\, at kwilliams@lancasterconservancy.org. \n \nYour Presenter\nKeith Williams is the Vice President of Engagement and Education for Lancaster Conservancy. \nKeith is an environmental educator\, naturalist\, writer and photographer. He has a BS in Environmental Biology from Kutztown University and MS in Ecological Teaching and Learning from the Lesley University Audubon Expedition Institute. Keith was the founding Director of Education and is the past Executive Director of the NorthBay Education Foundation\, one of the largest outdoor education programs in the US. He has served on the National Social Emotional Learning in Environmental Education Working Group\, was appointed to the Maryland Governors Environmental Literacy Committee\, and served on the Board of the Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education for 12 years. \n \nAbout this Class\nNote\, you must have taken the prerequisite “Habitat Advocate: Building Biodiversity in our Community” prior to taking this course. Learn more about Habitat Advocate classes and certification here. \nAttendees ages 16 and over are invited but must be accompanied by an adult if younger than 18. \n \nRefund/Cancellation Policies\nRefund Policy: If you are unable to attend this event after purchasing a ticket\, refund requests must be made at least two weeks before the event. \nCancellation Policy: This event will be held rain or shine\, with cancellation a day in advance for severe weather. SUMMARY:Habitat Advocate: Site Assessment 101 - Sit-Spots to Soil Analysis
DESCRIPTION:Practice how to observe and record the baseline aspects of a landscape before diving into designing a habitat garden.\n\n\nBuilding observation skills is essential in building biodiversity in our landscapes. In this class\, we will learn about the 5 E’s of Ecological Gardening and will conduct a site analysis. Expand your reach by applying these newly acquired observation skills of hydrology\, sun/shade analysis\, circulation\, and more in your home landscape or in community project space! \nThe Lancaster Conservancy has protected over 10\,000 acres of natural lands\, which are critically important to supporting biodiversity. Smaller patches of native habitats spread throughout urban landscapes are also essential to creating corridors of habitat – food and refuge – for wildlife. If the cost of this class is prohibitive\, please reach out to Keith Williams\, VP of Engagement and Education\, at kwilliams@lancasterconservancy.org. \n \nYour Presenters\nElyse Jurgen\, owner of Waxwing EcoWorks Co.\, is a community collaborator working to rebuild ecological literacy and biodiversity through hands-on ecological gardening experiences in South Central PA. She is certified as a Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional and Ecological/Permaculture Designer\, along with earning an Ecological Gardening Certification from Mt. Cuba Center. She has a master’s degree in Environmental Education\, 7-12 Biology Teaching Certification\, and participated in Cornell University’s Civic Ecology program. \nElyse works alongside homeowners in a participatory approach to their gardening for wildlife needs\, infusing educational opportunities during the design\, installation\, and stewarding process. She invites homeowners to deeply engage with their land to maximize its potential in enhancing human well-being and supporting dwindling wildlife populations. \nLinda Ferich retired from a career in emergency and occupational health nursing in 2013 and became a Pa Master Naturalist. She coordinates the Lancaster Conservancy’s Community Wildlife Habitat program\, a partnership with National Wildlife Federation. Through this program\, Lancaster County has become the first county in PA to become a certified NWF Community Wildlife Habitat. \nLinda enjoys doing property assessments to teach how to develop habitat and control stormwater. Linda studies native plants and designs ecological gardens as a certified Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional and student of Mt Cuba Center’s Ecological Gardening program. She and a few conservation-minded friends formed the Lancaster Native Plant Alliance\, a chapter of Pa Native Plant Society. The alliance promotes the use of native plants in all landscape settings through collaboration\, education\, and advocacy. \n \nAbout this Class\nNote\, you must have taken the prerequisite “Habitat Advocate: Building Biodiversity in our Community” prior to taking this course.
