From the deck of Tyler’s pond\, you might spot frogs\, turtles\, or even tadpoles drifting among tiny floating duckweed. Water striders glide across the surface\, while dragonflies and damselflies zip through the air.\nJoin PA Master Naturalist Sue Fredrick for a closer look at this dynamic ecosystem. Using your very own magnifying glass\, you’ll examine water samples up close and uncover the hidden world of tiny aquatic creatures. This leisurely-paced tour offers a fascinating glimpse into the plants and animals that thrive in and around the pond.\nAbout your guide: Sue Fredrick is a long-time Tyler volunteer and naturalist. She is an experienced Tyler docent and a certified PA Master Naturalist.\nPRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED\nThis program is best suited for elementary school-aged children with an accompanying adult\, although families and siblings of any age are welcome. Check in at the Visitor Center\, where you’ll meet your guide. As with any walk on Tyler’s trails\, sturdy shoes are suggested. Inclement weather will not cancel this tour. DESCRIPTION:The Weekend Warm-up Hike returns to Tyler’s hiking trails! Start your Friday off right with a brisk\, one-hour hike through Tyler’s gardens and natural areas beyond the deer exclusion fence. This hike is intended as a moderate cardio workout\, and we typically cover 2 1/2 to 3 miles in an hour. However\, we reserve the right to pause and enjoy whatever surprises nature offers.\nPlease come prepared to walk on a mix of asphalt\, gravel\, and natural surfaces. Solid hiking shoes are a must\, and hiking poles are recommended. Hikes are not suitable for those with limited mobility. Please make sure to pre-register\, as this program takes place outside our normal operating hours. GATES OPEN AT 7:45 am. Please be on time as the group leaves promptly from the parking lot at 8:10 am when the gate closes.\nPRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.\nMembers (sign in for your discount!): Adults: FREE\nNon-Members: Adults (ages 18-64):$18 per person; Seniors (ages 65+): $15 per person. DESCRIPTION:SUITABLE FOR ADULTS AND TEENS AGES 15-17\nExperience the magic of Tyler at night!\nJoin us for a hike under the light of the nearly full moon. Hiking at night is a unique sensory experience. We will use our senses of hearing\, smell and touch to navigate the forest. Our experienced guide will share points of special interest and seasonal highlights. We hope to see and hear some of the nocturnal wildlife that makes a home in Tyler’s natural areas!\nThis moderately paced hike is suitable for adults and teens who are comfortable walking 3 miles or more on rocky\, uneven terrain that may include some steep uphill and downhill sections. A registered adult must accompany teens. Bring a hand-held flashlight (please note that cell phones are not an acceptable source of light) and wear sturdy hiking boots. Feel free to bring binoculars to observe the moon.\nThis program starts after Tyler’s closing hours. The gates will open 15 minutes before the program begins and close promptly 10 minutes after the start time\, so please be on time. Keep your eyes peeled for brilliant bluebirds flitting about\, discover active nests with delicate eggs\, and maybe even spot fuzzy nestlings waiting for their next meal. Along the way\, learn about cavity-nesting birds and how you can help these feathered friends thrive.\nThis program is a perfect outing for curious kids and nature-loving grown-ups alike—bring your binoculars and a sense of wonder!\nWhen you arrive\, please check in first at the Visitor Center\, then meet your guide on the Visitor Center patio by 9:30 am.\nFor this tour\, we will be walking on grassy fields. Closed-toe shoes and bug spray are recommended. PLEASE NOTE: Strollers are not ideal in our fields. Although the focus is on plants\, we will talk about whatever we might see while we are out. In June we hope to find wildflowers of late spring and early summer. All levels of knowledge are welcome. There may be some periods of moderately paced hiking\, so wear comfortable hiking shoes. Tyler’s Wister Rhododendron Garden is home to one of the largest and most significant rhododendron collections in the country\, featuring hundreds of varieties and species. With blooms stretching from spring into early summer\, the garden offers a stunning display of nature’s artistry. Join Tyler Docent Nancy Heinbaugh as she unveils the history of this hidden gem\, guiding you through a kaleidoscope of blooms we expect to see at their peak in mid-May.\nAbout your guide: As an experienced docent\, Nancy enjoys sharing many aspects of Tyler with others\, including the gardens\, collections\, and history. DESCRIPTION:FOR ALL AGES\nJoin PA Master Naturalist Dave Charlton for a fun and easy hike on the trails outside our deer fence. Explore the outdoors\, discover cool plants and animals\, and see how nature changes with the seasons. Perfect for little explorers\, these walks are filled with surprises and are a great way to learn about the world around you. Bring the whole family and embark on an exciting nature adventure together!\nBy May\, the trails burst with greenery\, pollinators buzz busily\, and wildlife is thriving\nAbout your guide: Dave is a long-time Tyler volunteer and naturalist. He is a founding member of our docent program and a certified PA Master Naturalist.\nPRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED\nThis program is best suited to elementary school children with accompanying adults; however\, families and siblings of any age are welcome. Check in at the Visitor Center\, where you’ll meet your guide. As with any walk on the Tyler trails\, sturdy shoes are suggested. Participants should bring water and perhaps a walking stick.\nPLEASE NOTE: Strollers may not be ideal on some of our trails. If you plan to bring an infant or young child\, we recommend a carrier. Inclement weather will not cancel this tour; instead\, we will move to an indoor location and topic.\nMEMBERS: FREE (Remember to sign into your member account before continuing for your discounts)\nNON-MEMBERS: $18 per adult\, $10 per child ages 3-17\, children ages two and under need not register. The non-member fee includes admission\, so please feel free to stay for the day!\nGUEST PASS HOLDERS: For non-members only. FREE. DESCRIPTION:Join instructor Christina Teofilak and experience a slower flow class incorporating simple sequences suitable for beginners and intermediate levels. SUMMARY:Weekend Warm-up Hike
DESCRIPTION:The Weekend Warm-up Hike returns to Tyler’s hiking trails! Start your Friday off right with a brisk\, one-hour hike through Tyler’s gardens and natural areas beyond the deer exclusion fence. This hike is intended as a moderate cardio workout\, and we typically cover 2 1/2 to 3 miles in an hour. However\, we reserve the right to pause and enjoy whatever surprises nature offers.\nPlease come prepared to walk on a mix of asphalt\, gravel\, and natural surfaces. Solid hiking shoes are a must\, and hiking poles are recommended. Hikes are not suitable for those with limited mobility. Please make sure to pre-register\, as this program takes place outside our normal operating hours. GATES OPEN AT 7:45 am. Please be on time as the group leaves promptly from the parking lot at 8:10 am when the gate closes.\nPRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.\nMembers (sign in for your discount!): Adults: FREE\nNon-Members: Adults (ages 18-64):$18 per person; Seniors (ages 65+): $15 per person. DESCRIPTION:FOR ADULTS (18+) AND TEENS AGES 15-17\nThe stunning backbone of the Native Woodland Walk and North Woods was established over 75 years ago when Dr. Wister planted rhododendrons among the deciduous trees—many of which still thrive today. Later additions include flowering shrubs and trees\, while spring ephemerals and perennials carpet the ground. We’ve timed this Ramble to coincide with the flowering of our pawpaw trees\, the nesting of spring birds\, and bursts of color you will see at every turn.\nThere’s more to discover in Tyler’s 650 acres. Join Dr. Richard Brenner for a walk through the various eco-communities at Tyler. From seasonal wonders\, living fossils\, meadows\, watery locations\, geological treasures\, conservation areas\, and unexpected wildlife\, Richard will expertly guide you to prime areas for an experience you will remember. Expertise from others will often be on hand for a more in-depth exploration. These rambles are for those who have a love for nature\, exploring\, and learning. While a description of each Ramble is posted in advance\, we reserve the right to make last-minute changes\, including adjustments for weather and trail conditions. Bring your reusable water bottle and dress for the weather\, including sturdy shoes. The tour concludes at the Pollinator Preserve\, where you’ll explore the essential role of pollinators and pick up tips for creating a pollinator-friendly garden at home.\nAbout your guide: Since retiring from Penn Dental Medicine\, Dr. Woody Kotch has reignited his passion for the natural world. Through training at Tyler\, the PA Master Naturalist program\, the Xerces Society Ambassador Training\, and his research\, he developed new tours for Tyler that blend environmental science and history.
