Through training at Tyler\, the PA Master Naturalist program\, the Xerces Society Ambassador Training\, and his research\, he developed new tours for Tyler that blend environmental science and history. Start your Friday off right with a brisk\, one-hour hike through Tyler’s gardens and natural areas beyond the deer exclusion fence. This hike is intended as a moderate cardio workout\, and we typically cover 2 1/2 to 3 miles in an hour. However\, we reserve the right to pause and enjoy whatever surprises nature offers.\nPlease come prepared to walk on a mix of asphalt\, gravel\, and natural surfaces. Solid hiking shoes are a must\, and hiking poles are recommended. Hikes are not suitable for those with limited mobility. Please make sure to pre-register\, as this program takes place outside our normal operating hours. GATES OPEN AT 7:45 am. SUMMARY:Richard's Rambles: Hike to Pink Hill Serpentine Barrens
DESCRIPTION:FOR ADULTS (18+) AND TEENS AGES 15-17\nPink Hill showcases the only surviving serpentine barren of the 10 that once existed in Delaware County. Join us as we explore this unique landscape and look for endangered and threatened species that call this harsh environment home. In early May we hope to see the pink serpentine phlox\, for which this barren was named\, along with other unusual species endemic to serpentine barrens.\nNote: Please meet your guide at the Visitor Center and be prepared to hike to the Serpentine Barrens\, a walk of about 30 minutes. There is one short\, steep staircase to enter the Barrens.\nThere’s more to discover in Tyler’s 650 acres. Join Dr. Richard Brenner for a walk through the various eco-communities at Tyler. From seasonal wonders\, living fossils\, meadows\, watery locations\, geological treasures\, conservation areas\, and unexpected wildlife\, Richard will expertly guide you to prime areas for an experience you will remember. Expertise from others will often be on hand for a more in-depth exploration. These rambles are for those who have a love for nature\, exploring\, and learning. While a description of each ramble is posted in advance\, we reserve the right to make last-minute changes\, including adjustments for weather and trail conditions. Bring your reusable water bottle and dress for the weather\, including sturdy shoes. DESCRIPTION:The Weekend Warm-up Hike returns to Tyler’s hiking trails! Start your Friday off right with a brisk\, one-hour hike through Tyler’s gardens and natural areas beyond the deer exclusion fence. This hike is intended as a moderate cardio workout\, and we typically cover 2 1/2 to 3 miles in an hour. However\, we reserve the right to pause and enjoy whatever surprises nature offers.\nPlease come prepared to walk on a mix of asphalt\, gravel\, and natural surfaces. Solid hiking shoes are a must\, and hiking poles are recommended. Hikes are not suitable for those with limited mobility. Please make sure to pre-register\, as this program takes place outside our normal operating hours.\nGATES OPEN AT 7:45 am. The tour concludes at the Pollinator Preserve\, where you’ll explore the essential role of pollinators and pick up tips for creating a pollinator-friendly garden at home.\nAbout your guide: Since retiring from Penn Dental Medicine\, Dr. Woody Kotch has reignited his passion for the natural world. Through training at Tyler\, the PA Master Naturalist program\, the Xerces Society Ambassador Training\, and his research\, he developed new tours for Tyler that blend environmental science and history.
