DESCRIPTION:The Weekend Warm-up Hike returns to Tyler’s hiking trails! Start your Friday off right with a brisk\, one-hour hike through Tyler’s gardens and natural areas beyond the deer exclusion fence. This hike is intended as a moderate cardio workout\, and we typically cover 2 1/2 to 3 miles in an hour. However\, we reserve the right to pause and enjoy whatever surprises nature offers.\nPlease come prepared to walk on a mix of asphalt\, gravel\, and natural surfaces. Solid hiking shoes are a must\, and hiking poles are recommended. Hikes are not suitable for those with limited mobility. Please make sure to pre-register\, as this program takes place outside our normal operating hours. GATES OPEN AT 7:45 am. DESCRIPTION:SUITABLE FOR ADULTS AND TEENS AGES 15-17\nExperience the magic of Tyler at night!\nThere’s something unforgettable about stepping into the forest after dark. Shadows shift\, sounds sharpen\, and the familiar trails take on a sense of mystery and beauty. Guided by the light of the full moon\, we’ll explore Tyler’s woodlands\, tuning into the sights\, sounds\, and scents of the night. Along the way\, your guide will share points of special interest and seasonal highlights. We hope to see and hear some of the nocturnal wildlife that make a home in Tyler’s natural areas!\nThis moderately paced hike is suitable for adults and teens who are comfortable walking three miles or more on rocky\, uneven terrain that may include some distances up and down steep trails. A registered adult must accompany teens. Bring a hand-held flashlight (please note that cell phones are not an acceptable source of light) and wear sturdy hiking boots. Feel free to bring binoculars to observe the moon.\nThis program starts after Tyler’s closing hours. The gates will open 15 minutes before the program begins and close promptly 10 minutes after the start time\, so please be on time. Utilizing our inner scientist\, writer\, and artist\, we will learn to capture the intricate details we find. This class will provide an encouraging and supportive atmosphere to learn the tools and techniques for observing\, recording\, and sketching our surroundings at Tyler Arboretum.\nThis class will spark our curiosity by learning to let go of what we know\, encouraging our wonder and delight to lead us to new discoveries\nAbout the instructor: Meg Lemieur is a nature-focused illustrator based in Philadelphia\, whose mission is to celebrate the diversity\, interconnectedness\, and amazing feats of the natural world. Her illustrations have been published in numerous tabletop games\, in comic anthologies\, and as large-scale educational projects. She lends her skills to a variety of advocacy campaigns and\, in 2023\, was awarded the Woman of Environmental Arts award by Penn Future.\nNature Journaling Materials List:\nUnlined notebook with hardback or paper & a clipboard. This class will provide an encouraging and supportive atmosphere to learn the tools and techniques for observing\, recording\, and sketching our surroundings at Tyler Arboretum.\nThis class will review the basics of nature journaling while introducing how to choose a subject to study and learning to observe and record our surroundings as the different pieces relate to one another.\nAbout the instructor: Meg Lemieur is a nature-focused illustrator based in Philadelphia\, whose mission is to celebrate the diversity\, interconnectedness\, and amazing feats of the natural world. Her illustrations have been published in numerous tabletop games\, in comic anthologies\, and as large-scale educational projects. She lends her skills to a variety of advocacy campaigns and\, in 2023\, was awarded the Woman of Environmental Arts award by Penn Future.\nNature Journaling Materials List:\nUnlined notebook with hardback or paper & a clipboard. Although the focus is on plants\, we will talk about whatever we might see while we are out! In July and August\, we hope to see a large variety of summer wildflowers. Explore the outdoors\, discover cool plants and animals\, and see how nature changes with the seasons. Perfect for little explorers\, these walks are filled with surprises and are a great way to learn about the world around you. Bring the whole family and embark on an exciting nature adventure together!\nIn summer\, the trails are the coolest place in the Arboretum. The forest is full of life\, and its shaded paths provide relief from the heat. Summer blooming flowers appear\, and woodland creatures dart about enjoying the bounty of the season.\nAbout your guide: Dave is a long-time Tyler volunteer and naturalist. He is a founding member of our docent program and a certified PA Master Naturalist.\nPRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED\nThis program is best suited for elementary school children accompanied by adults; however\, families and siblings of all ages are welcome. Check in at the Visitor Center\, where you’ll meet your guide. As with any walk on the Tyler trails\, sturdy shoes are suggested. Participants should bring water and\, if desired\, a walking stick.\nPLEASE NOTE: Strollers may not be ideal on some of our trails. These four classes will provide an encouraging and supportive atmosphere to learn the tools and techniques for observing\, recording\, and sketching our surroundings at Tyler Arboretum. Each class will explore a new area in the Arboretum. Register for the series or single classes (single classes sold separately).\nClass 1 will cover the basics of nature journaling\, including centering ourselves in our current setting\, learning to pay attention to and record different senses\, and begin to record plants in our journals.\nClass 2 will review the basics of nature journaling while introducing how to choose a subject to study and learning to observe and record our surroundings as the different pieces relate to one another.\nClass 3 will spark our curiosity by learning to let go of what we know\, encouraging our wonder and delight to lead us to discoveries.\nClass 4 will deepen our observation skills as we learn to record sounds\, sketch flitting insects and birds\, and compare similar subjects to guide us to a better understanding.\nAbout the instructor: Meg Lemieur is a nature-focused illustrator based in Philadelphia\, whose mission is to celebrate the diversity\, interconnectedness\, and amazing feats of the natural world. DESCRIPTION:The Weekend Warm-up Hike returns to Tyler’s hiking trails! Start your Friday off right with a brisk\, one-hour hike through Tyler’s gardens and natural areas beyond the deer exclusion fence. This hike is intended as a moderate cardio workout\, and we typically cover 2 1/2 to 3 miles in an hour. However\, we reserve the right to pause and enjoy whatever surprises nature offers.\nPlease come prepared to walk on a mix of asphalt\, gravel\, and natural surfaces. Solid hiking shoes are a must\, and hiking poles are recommended. Hikes are not suitable for those with limited mobility. Please make sure to pre-register\, as this program takes place outside our normal operating hours. GATES OPEN AT 7:45 am.
