SUMMARY:Andrew Wyeth's Botanical Imagination
DESCRIPTION:Attend this session to learn all about Brandywine Museum of Art’s newest exhibition with Dr. William L. Coleman ’07 Haverford College.\n\n\nThis illustrated talk will give a behind-the-scenes look at a new exhibition at the Brandywine Museum of Art that will be of particular interest to friends of the Haverford College Arboretum. Every Leaf & Twig: Andrew Wyeth’s Botanical Imagination brings together a remarkable group of watercolors\, most never before exhibited\, that reflect the way this uniquely place-based American artist responded to individual specimens of southeastern Pennsylvania’s plant life. Not as a botanical illustrator but as an art historically literate visionary\, Andrew Wyeth found in the ordinary plant life of Chadds Ford a point of departure for remarkable creations. \n \nDr. William L. Coleman ’07 is Wyeth Foundation Curator and Director of the Andrew & Betsy Wyeth Study Center at the Brandywine Museum of Art\, with additional oversight of staff and collections at the Farnsworth Art Museum in Maine. After Haverford\, where he is a member of the Corporation and an occasional alumni interviewer for Admissions\, he earned two master’s degrees in the UK\, a doctorate from Berkeley\, and fellowships from the NEH and Smithsonian. He writes\, teaches\, and curates exhibitions centering on the landscape art of the United States. \n \n Andrew Wyeth\, Buttonwood\, Study for The Hunter\, 1943. Drybrush watercolor on paper\, 19 ½ x 29 ½ in. Collection of the Wyeth Foundation for American Art\, B0575R. © Wyeth Foundation for American Art/Artists Rights Society (ARS)\, New York\, 2024 \nParking can be found in our visitor parking lot and participants will meet for this presentation in VCAM 001.

SUMMARY:450 Million Years of Novelty and Convergence: History of Plant Evolution
DESCRIPTION:Join Jonathan Wilson (Associate Professor of Environmental Studies) for a look into his cutting-edge research!\n\n\n450 Million Years of Novelty and Convergence: A Brief History of Plant Evolution \nThe evolution of land plants transformed the planet: from providing the basis of complex terrestrial ecosystems\, reshaping the physical environment of the Earth’s surface\, to transforming the chemistry of the ocean and atmosphere. The history of plant evolution—preserved in the fossil record—contains a record of these changes and the plants that drove them\, with their surprising morphologies and novel vegetative and reproductive features. In this presentation\, Jonathan will explore the evolutionary history of plants\, from the cryptic origins of the earliest land plants to the rise of extant biomes—while exploring\, along the way\, some of the unusual\, extinct plants that remain enigmatic today. \nJonathan Wilson’s Biography \nPhoto Caption: Main Ridge Forest Reserve in Tobago \nParking for this event is in the Visitor’s Lot and the talk will take place in Lutnick Library room 200.

SUMMARY:Why Honey Bees Are Important
DESCRIPTION:Join master beekeeper\, Vincent Aloyo\, for a talk about our friend the honey bee.\n\n\nHoney bees are key pollinators\, enabling or enhancing food production. In gathering their own food\, bees move pollen from flower to flower\, allowing plants to produce seed-containing fruits (some of which we call vegetables). Although many bees and insects are efficient pollinators\, Vincent Aloyo\, Master Beekeeper\, will explain the characteristics that make honey bees useful pollinators. Despite their importance\, large numbers of honey bees die each winter\, and other pollinators are in decline\, mostly due to human activity. Lack of forage (flowers and weeds) due to overuse of insecticides and herbicides in both home use and commercial agriculture are contributing to pollinator declines. This talk will explain how you can help honey bees and other pollinators in your local area and influence wider thinking and action regarding pollinator needs. \nParking can be found in our visitor parking lot and participants will meet for the workshop at VCAM 001
