SUMMARY:Birdwatch Kayak Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided kayak tour focused on the birds of the Poquessing Creek and Delaware River. We will be joined by Bria\, Senior Coordinator of Audubon Mid-Atlantic at the Discovery Center\, who will teach us about the birds we encounter out on the water. Bria will also cover the use of digital tools to identify what we see and hear\, so you will leave with a better handle on how to identify birds out in the wild! \nPlease bring your own binoculars to the event! Note that the Free Library of Philadelphia offers birding backpacks (including binoculars) for loan at multiple locations. \nWe will mostly paddle in tandem (two-person) kayaks\, so if you arrive solo\, you may get paired with a new friend. This activity is open to all ages 12+\, and minors must be accompanied by an adult. \nPlease reach out to Colleen at cwinslow@glenfoerd.org if the cost of this event is prohibitive. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearn more\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFYI: Be prepared for summer temperatures and moderate physical exertion. Getting in and out of your boat can be a wet and muddy experience\, so wear appropriate clothing and consider bringing something to change into after the activity. Don’t forget your water\, snacks\, and sunscreen! \nThe meeting point for this event will be behind the Carriage House\, which is a short walk down the drive from the public parking lot. \nEvents can be canceled on short notice due to weather and river conditions. DESCRIPTION:Join us for our annual celebration of the shortest day of the year. This event offers a choice between a guided walk with naturalist Mike Weilbacher\, a yin-style yoga class with Melissa Gyuraki\, and creative crafts for the whole family brought to you by our very own Lily P.A.D.S educators. We’ll come back together at the end for hot drinks\, light refreshments\, and a sunset bonfire by the river! Feel free to reach out to Colleen at cwinslow@glenfoerd.org with any questions you may have. \nSolstice celebration schedule of activities: \n3:15 pm- choose to attend one of the following: nature walk\, yin-style yoga class\, or crafts with Lily P.A.D.S (see descriptions below) \n4:15 pm- bonfire and refreshments \nNature walk with Mike Weilbacher: Today marks the winter solstice\, the very first day of winter. But what exactly happens on this solstice day? And how did cultures from around the world and across time mark the moment? On a guided outdoor walk\, naturalist Mike Weilbacher shares the science\, legends\, and traditions of the season\, from the Stonehenge to Native American woodhenges\, from decking the halls to kissing under the mistletoe. Mike weaves into the walk what’s happening to Glen Foerd’s plants and animals during the season too. Please dress warmly for this excursion. \nYin-style Yoga in the Mansion with Melissa Gyuraki: Join us for a calming yoga practice that honors rest and reflection with just a touch of inner heat as we move into winter and welcome the return of sunlight. Please wear comfortable clothes that you can move in and bring your own yoga mat– you will be able to store belongings inside for the duration of the event. \nCreative Crafts with Lily P.A.D.S: At our Lily PADS craft table\, we’ll be decorating lanterns to add a little light to the cold\, dark months ahead! This wealth of found material will be transformed into art\, proving that even discarded objects can have new life. This is a unique opportunity as our usual tours remain on the PA side of the river. \nOnce we arrive on the Island\, you’ll have the freedom to explore at your own pace—stroll along the nature trails\, relax on the beach or paddle around the island’s peaceful coves. \nLunch will be provided by Glen Foerd to keep you fueled for the adventure. \n Participants will be in tandem kayaks and paddling with another participant. General admission for this Fundraiser is $75 per person. Please consider selecting a $100 or $125 donation ticket to further support our environmental programs. \nFundraisers like this one\, along with generous community support\, help us keep many of our programs free or low-cost. Your contributions make it possible for us to welcome a diverse range of visitors and ensure that this beautiful estate—and the natural environment that surrounds it—remains accessible to all. \n**Please be advised\, river currents and tide changes can make this a difficult experience for some. DESCRIPTION:Join us at our annual celebration\, which will focus on our nature-themed programs. There will be open boating on the Poquessing Creek and Delaware River\, so come explore the water on one of Glen Foerd’s kayaks\, canoes\, or rowboats. \n*Boating will take place from 12- 3:30 due to tidal changes. \nOn land\, you can enjoy educational activities about bees and arts and crafts using upcycled and natural materials with Kids Art Shop\, or play around in our Lily P.A.D.S. playground while enjoying some hands-on activities. We are proud to host partner organizations with activities from Riverfront North\, Tacony Lab\, Wissahickon Environmental Center\, and the Pennypack Environmental Center. \nShop wares from local artists\, such as Hinch Worm Art\, Meg Lemieur Art\, and Taiku. Grab a bite to eat from the food truck or a sweet treat from Mister Softee. \nBring a blanket or some chairs and enjoy the views of the Delaware River and Poquessing Creek. Tour the house and investigate the grounds with our QR audio tour kiosks located throughout the park. Make sure to bring sunscreen\, water\, and anything else you might need to enjoy the outdoors!
