SUMMARY:Artist Talk and Dinner: Yassi Deylami
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with Yassi Deylami in a more intimate and relaxed setting. Following the talk\, dinner will be served allowing for more discussion with the artist and among guests. \nTrained as an architect\, Yassi Deylami approaches art as a form of spatial inhabitation. For her\, architecture is not merely structure but also a logic that allows space to be lived into and activated by memory\, imagination\, and presence. With a Master of Fine Arts and Master of Architecture\, Yassi creates work based on geometry and structural order\, which becomes the framework through which creatures emerge: shadow selves made visible\, ready to play.\nGrowing up between Tehran\, Iran and Sydney\, Australia\, Yassi learned to fragment and conceal aspects of her identity to survive this duality. Art became her way of unlocking her feelings of displacement\, and the demons she once believed she was fighting\, revealed themselves as exiled parts seeking recognition and belonging.\nWorking with charcoal\, pastel\, and printmaking\, Yassi allows spaces and forms to surface intuitively. Her large-scale works engulf the viewer\, drawing them into inner landscapes that house the unconscious and initiate self-discovery. Her smaller\, intimate monotypes invite viewers to be vulnerable and reflect upon the mysterious as a path toward wholeness.\nThrough her work\, large and small\, she creates surreal worlds that explore displacement\, belonging\, and the idea of home as a site of deep memory\, comfort and the universal desire for connection amid chaos. In a digital world defined by surfaces and distraction\, her work invites viewers inward – to confront the shared human truths of grief\, longing\, rage and the enduring desire for wholeness. \nMenu\n___\nCucumber\, red bell peppers\, tomato salad\n___\nBraised chicken with pomegranate glaze\nSaffron rice\n___\nOrange almond cake\n___\n*A GF vegan option of tagine with rice is available\, please inquire at time of reservation.

SUMMARY:A Closer Look by Yassi Deylami Opening Cocktail Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening cocktail reception on First Friday for our new exhibition featuring Yassi Deylami! \nRooms for the Unconscious \nIn a world of constant change\, where identity is often defined through otherness in the pursuit of uniqueness\, Yassi Deylami asks how spaces of safety and unity can still be found. Her mythological explorations strip away surface logic to connect with a deeper human narrative—one that repeats across time and geography. By removing cultural and societal conditioning\, the work seeks to uncover the fundamental forces that have sustained communities for generations. \nWith a Master of Fine Arts and Master of Architecture\, Yassi presents continuous worlds of characters navigating their place within society. Chaos breaks free at one edge while foundations are rebuilt at another\, held together by a central order that offers grounding. Rather than reinforcing binary thinking\, the work challenges the idea that experience is simply black and white. Internally\, multiple truths coexist\, yet externally we are conditioned to define opposition as “other” in order to give ourselves the illusion of being right. \nIn a world that demands differentiation to succeed\, Yassi’s sacred spaces search for belonging without sacrificing individuality—imagining community as something that can be rebuilt through shared human connection. \nOpen to the public between 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

SUMMARY:FRIEDAcommunity 10th Anniversary Art Exhibition Opening Cocktail Reception- Friday\, November 7
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening cocktail reception of our 10th Anniversary exhibition!\nFRIEDAcommunity has commissioned Madrid-based artist Mariano Martín to create 294 illustrations each capturing a special moment in FRIEDA / FRIEDAcommunity’s 10-year history of cultivating meaningful and memorable connections. Visitors will be able to scan QR codes to discover the inspiration for these works. \nAll artwork is available for purchase and all proceeds support FRIEDAcommunity. \nMariano Martín is a Spanish artist\, designer\, and architect whose work blurs the line between disciplines. Mariano captures the poetry of everyday life through lines and color. For him\, art is a way of seeing: walks\, meals\, conversations\, and moments over coffee all become inspiration. Each drawing is an intuitive translation of feeling\, gesture\, sound\, or movement—revealing a world just beneath the surface. His hand becomes a translator\, allowing the unexpected to emerge.

SUMMARY:FRIEDAcommunity Participatory Art Project- POMBAA
DESCRIPTION:FRIEDA and FRIEDAcommunity offer a welcoming space to people of all ages and from diverse backgrounds brought together around a curated program of activities and events focused on food\, art and culture. \nOur large-scale participatory art projects are opportunities for everyone to collaborate on installations that bring joy and wow to community members and visitors alike! \nJoin us for the reveal of Pombaa on March 1\, 2024 at 6:00 pm. \nFor almost two years\, young and old\, visitors\, guests and members\, gathered around our community table\, volunteering their time to make hundreds of pom poms from plastic shopping bags that could not otherwise be used following the long overdue plastic bag ban. \nWithout any special skills\, everyone was able to sheep in to create this collective work. The attendees followed trustfully\, the instructions provided\, even though they didn’t know exactly what the end result would be. Becoming a pompom expert might not have been the reason to join the flock at FRIEDA. But the togetherness\, fun\, and opportunity to create something big kept us coming back every week\, to make more pompoms! \nTHANK you to all the volunteers who participated and a special THANK YOU to:\nCoco\, who deserves all the credit for making this FRIEDAcommunity art project bigger and fluffier!\nMark\, for sharing his construction and engineering skills.\nDonna\, Kilahra\, Marika\, Hester\, and Suji for leading the pompom workshop for the past 18 months. \nPOMBAA\nOpening reception: Friday\, March 1st\n6:00 pm – 8:00 pm\nLocation: FRIEDA\, 320 Walnut Street\nOpen to the public\nRegistration recommended via hello@frieda.community\n* Mask recommended during this event. \n* In addition to hosting art exhibits\, FRIEDA and FRIEDAcommunity have engaged the community in previous large-scale participatory art projects: Love Pavilion by artist Ziui Chen (2019) and #BlueAsAButterly (2020-2021) made of more than 20\,000 blue butterflies cut out by hand. This butterfly project was created by Thomas Steinborn created at the onset of the pandemic\, first as a stay-at-home craft project for volunteers during the lockdown\, and later as a full-blown rebirth of our community when FRIEDA reopened to the public. These installations are evocative memories we share as a community.

SUMMARY:FRIEDAcommunity – Opening Reception: A closer look by Gerri Spilka
DESCRIPTION:FRIEDAcommunity is proud to announce the show A closer look by Gerri Spilka.\nJoin us and the artist on Friday\, December 1\, First Friday\, during the opening reception from 6pm to 8pm.\nGerri Spilka considers herself to be an alchemist who takes ordinary pieces of cotton and transforms them into larger-than-life shapes of glorious\, luminous colors. Her work fuses seemingly disparate elements: modern figurative abstraction\, the grittiness of urban life\, and decades of observing people. She uses these elements to re-imagine traditional quilts\, making them into visual stories on the human experience.\nGerri’s work has been widely exhibited in the U.S.\, Canada\, and Europe. It is held in private and public collections\, including the International Quilt Museum (Lincoln\, NE)\, as well as Park Towne Place Art Collection and Temple University’s Fox School of Business (both in Philadelphia\, PA).\n100% of the sale proceeds of any artwork during the exhibition go to the artist. In return\, we have asked that selected artists schedule time to engage with our community through a workshop\, a demonstration\, or a discussion.\nDate: Friday\, December 1\n6:00 pm – 8:00 pm\nMask recommended during this event. \nFor more information and to sign up\, please visit https://frieda.community/programs/gerri-spilka-opening-reception-12-1-23/

SUMMARY:FRIEDAcommunity – Reading + Poetry debut from Kay Cosgrove
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a very special literary event celebrating ANYBODY HOME? (Blue Edge\, 2023)\, the poetry debut from Kay Cosgrove.\nThis event is made possible thanks to donations from our annual fundraiser.\nThe poems in Kay Cosgrove’s first collection are driven by curiosity – about herself\, the world\, and her place in it. Witty and elegantly restrained\, they ask the question: how do we live the lives we’ve made for ourselves? Cosgrove roams from barrooms to checkout lines to the enigma of motherhood; she is a teenager responsible for a sack-of-flour-as-a-baby\, and then an adult driving a teenage babysitter home. She explores the texture of our connections to strangers\, family\, ourselves\, and illuminates the sublime in the unimportant. The poems in Anybody Home? embrace life’s sweetness and shadows. Here\, the ordinary is unfathomable and the ineffable is ordinary.\nOther readers include: Christian Bancroft\, Lauren Hilger and Adrienne Perry \nTime: 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm\nPrice: this is a free event open to the general public\nSign up at least 2 days prior to the event via email hello@frieda.community \nCheck website for more information www.frieda.community/programs/reading-poetry-debut-from-kay-cosgrove/

SUMMARY:Reading + Poetry debut from Kay Cosgrove
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a very special literary event celebrating ANYBODY HOME? (Blue Edge\, 2023)\, the poetry debut from Kay Cosgrove. \nThis event is made possible thanks to donations from our annual fundraiser. \nThe poems in Kay Cosgrove’s first collection are driven by curiosity – about herself\, the world\, and her place in it. Here\, the ordinary is unfathomable and the ineffable is ordinary. \nKay Cosgrove is the recipient of awards from The Academy of American Poets\, Inprint Houston\, and The Westchester Review. Her poetry has appeared in The Southern Review\, The Missouri Review\, The Florida Review and The American Poetry Review\, among other journals. She holds a PhD from the University of Houston and an MFA from Sarah Lawrence College and lives in Pennsylvania with her family. \nOther readers include: \nChristian Bancroft received their PhD from the University of Houston and is the recipient of a Michener Fellowship. He is the author of a poetry collection\, A Ghost Has No Fantasies (forthcoming from Unbound Editions Press\, 2025); a book of scholarship\, Queering Modernist Translation: The Poetics of Race\, Gender\, and Queerness (2020); and a co-edited collection (with Jenny Molberg)\, Adelaide Crapsey: The Life and Work of an American Master (2018). Their work has appeared or is forthcoming in Callaloo\, The Missouri Review\, Prairie Schooner\, jubilat\, Gulf Coast\, and Asymptote\, among others. \nLauren Hilger is the author of Morality Play (Poetry NW Editions\, 2022). Named a Nadya Aisenberg Fellow in poetry from MacDowell\, she has also received fellowships from the Hambidge Center and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. Her work has appeared in BOMB\, Harvard Review\, Kenyon Review\, and elsewhere. She serves as a poetry editor for No Tokens. \nAdrienne Perry is a Kimbilio Fellow\, Hedgebrook alumna\, and a member of the Rabble Collective.
