SUMMARY:The Solar System Zoo: a lecture with UPENN Professor Gary Bernstein
DESCRIPTION:Discover the many fascinating members of our Solar System\, how numerous small planets were found\, and how they formed alongside the Sun.\n\n\nLearn why the question “How many planets are there?” is more complicated than it seems in this fun and informative presentation. \n \nProfessor Bernstein’s research centers on extracting gems of astronomical knowledge from large piles of astronomical images. Currently his group is pursuing two main science projects with the ~100\,000 sky exposures of the Dark Energy Survey. \nGravitational lensing is the deflection of light by gravity as predicted by General Relativity. These deflections can cause dramatic distortions of background objects\, or subtle changes in shape known as weak lensing. By measuring statistical correlations among the shapes of hundreds of millions of galaxies in the DES\, we can measure the properties of dark matter and dark energy\, which do not emit or absorb any light of their own. \nProfessor Bernstein and collaborators are also searching the DES images for solar system members orbiting beyond Neptune\, a.k.a. trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs). These thousands of small icy bodies are remnants of the early phases of the formation of our Solar System and give clues to the dramatic rearrangements of the giant planets that occurred early on.

SUMMARY:Wild & Weedy
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered if the “weeds” growing around you might actually be useful—or even delicious?\n\n\nThis program dives into the world of the plants formerly known as weeds\, revealing their hidden benefits and surprising roles as food and medicine. You’ll learn the basics of foraging\, including plant identification\, seasonal harvesting\, and how to safely recognize and use common edible plants found throughout the Philadelphia area. Perfect for curious beginners eager to see local landscapes in a whole new way—and maybe never look at a sidewalk crack the same again. \nThis program will take place in Room 131 on the First Floor. The final session will take place in the Culinary Literacy Center on the Fourth Floor. \nVisit freelibrary.org/events and search ‘Gardening’ for more information on upcoming programs!

SUMMARY:Let's Get Growing: Neighborhood Gardens Trust
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with the Neighborhood Gardens Trust\, Philadelphia’s neighborhood garden protector.\n\n\nAs the city’s largest land trust dedicated to preserving community gardens and shared open spaces\, NGT has safeguarded a network of more than 58 spaces where neighbors grow food\, flowers\, and lasting connections. Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year\, NGT holds land in perpetuity—ensuring that community-managed green spaces remain vibrant\, accessible\, and protected for Philadelphians. \nHear directly from NGT’s Executive Director and Stewardship Manager as they share stories from the field. Learn how they collaborate with self-organized groups of gardeners\, community organizations\, property owners\, the City of Philadelphia\, and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to secure and steward these essential neighborhood spaces. \nThis session will explore how locally managed gardens contribute to community resilience and health—and what it takes to secure and sustain these spaces for future generations. \nThis event will take place in the Heim Center\, Room 131/132 on the first floor of Parkway Central Library.

SUMMARY:Library of Life
DESCRIPTION:The Library of Life Book Tour is designed to highlight both books and life resources as tools for healing and growth.\n\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. It will be held in Rooms 131/132 in the Heim Center. Registration is not required yet seating is limited. There will be an opportunity to purchase Ciara’s book after the presentation. \nRooted in my book Cliché Your Way Through Life REMIX\, each event blends storytelling\, therapy-inspired reflection\, and practical life tools. By connecting the metaphor of the library with real-life resources\, the program encourages participants to see both literature and community as guides for navigating challenges\, building resilience\, and creating lives they don’t want to escape. \nCiara Ward – Bio \nCiara Ward is a licensed clinical therapist\, conflict resolution specialist\, author\, and founder of Ci Notes\, a platform that provides tools for emotional healing\, life skills\, and authentic living. With over eight years of experience in hospitals\, courts\, schools\, and private practice\, she supports individuals and families through some of life’s toughest moments. \nKnown as the Librarian of Life\, Ciara blends her personal story with clinical expertise to help people heal the parts of themselves they were taught to hide. Her journey from trauma survivor to therapist\, mentor\, doula\, and educator is living proof that everything she needed\, she became. Ciara works with people of all ages\, cultures\, and backgrounds\, reminding us that therapy is not just for the couch. It is for the world.
