SUMMARY:Relics and Ruins: West Park
DESCRIPTION:Relics and Ruins: West Park\n\nJoin us for a hike to learn about some of Fairmount Park’s historical hidden gems!\n\nDate\nSaturday\, March 21 \n\n\n\nTime\n9:00 am – 12:00 pm \n\n\n\nLocation\nBelmount Plateau Parking Lot \n1800 Belmont Mansion Drive\nPhiladelphia PA\, 19131 \n\n\n\nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy’s John Sigmund\, Director of Partnerships and Sponsorships and park history enthusiast\, for a three-mile guided hike to explore the relics and ruins of Fairmount Park. \nAs one of America’s oldest urban parks\, Fairmount Park has accumulated many layers of history – sometimes literally! A closer exploration of the landscape reveals the ruins of abandoned infrastructure and buildings that go back to the beginnings of the 178-year-old park system and occasionally\, even further. Most of the year\, nature cloaks these hidden treasures in dense growth\, but the bare woods of winter provide the perfect time to go off the beaten path. \nIf you’re fascinated by Philly history and discovering hidden treasures of the park’s past\, this hike is not to be missed! \nThis is the event page for the March 21 West Park hike; however\, there will also be an East Park hike on March 7 (more info here). Sign up for one date or for both! \nPlease note\, this hike will have some challenging sections that require agility. Since we will occasionally venture off trail\, you are encouraged to wear sturdy hiking boots and rugged outerwear that can withstand scrapes from sharp sticks and branches (please\, no fashion or formal wear! :)). \nEstimated distance: about three miles\nLevel: moderate\nTerrain: mainly hilly trails \nMarch 7: Relics & Ruins\, East Park\nSome haunting historic highlights on this tour include: the smallest surviving structure designed by Frank Furness\, two forgotten spring heads and a spooky springhouse popular in neighborhood lore\, a WPA-built bathroom\, and the hidden ruins of a colonial-era mansion that burnt down 36 years ago. Meet at Woodford Mansion. \nMarch 21: Relics & Ruins\, West Park\nWe’ll start at Belmont Plateau and touch upon a section the Trolley Trail. Next\, we’ll find the hidden remnants of rail tracks from the Philadelphia Columbia Railroad. Finally\, we’ll explore the ruins of the George’s Hill Reservoir\, taking in one of the most secret and spectacular city views. Meet at the Belmont Plateau parking lot. \nINSTRUCTOR BIO: John Sigmund is a multidisciplinary artist\, history lover\, and urban park enthusiast with years of experience as a nonprofit manager and arts educator. Born and raised in Philadelphia\, he spent a decade living in Austin\, San Antonio\, and New York City\, but made a happy homecoming to go back to school at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. John has the proud distinction of actually living in Fairmount Park– he and his partner Jaime are resident caretakers at Lemon Hill Mansion. And although Lemon Hill is his home base\, John is an enthusiastic advocate for all of the historic houses in the park system. \nTICKET PRICE: $15 \n\n\nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO: \n\nOn the ticketing page\, you can sign up for one event or for both.\nThis hike is roughly three miles over mainly hilly trails.\nAppropriate for adults and mature adolescents (minors must be ticketed and accompanied by a guardian).\nPlease dress according to weather conditions and wear good hiking shoes (boots/sneakers).\nBring water (drinking water is not available in the park) and a snack.\nUnfortunately\, there are no bathrooms along the hike route so please plan accordingly.\nWe will leave a few minutes after the scheduled start time. SUMMARY:Greenhouse Yoga at the Horticulture Center
DESCRIPTION:Connect with others and your practice in the lush greenhouse setting!\n\n\n\nLOCATION\nFairmount Park Horticulture Center \n  \n\n\n\nFairmount Park Conservancy is thrilled to announce the much-anticipated return of Greenhouse Yoga at the Fairmount Park Horticulture Center on select dates throughout the winter. \nEscape the winter blues and connect with your practice in the lush\, tropical setting of the Horticulture Center’s greenhouse. These all-level classes take place on select Sundays and will be led by a rotation of experienced teachers from Tula Yoga. \nABOUT THE HORTICULTURE CENTER: The Horticulture Center in West Fairmount Park\, a modern exhibition hall and greenhouse\, was built for the Bicentennial Celebration in 1976. It sits on the site of the former Horticultural Hall\, a 1876 Centennial Exposition building. Within its walls are a visitor center and greenhouse where one can see many tropical plants and a fine collection of statues interspersed in the greenery. To learn more about the Horticulture Center\, you can visit their Instagram page. \nTICKET PRICE: $15 \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO: \n\nPlease bring your own yoga mat. The floor of the Horticulture Center is similar to an outdoor surface. You may want to bring something to place under your yoga mat (both for padding and to keep your yoga mat clean) or be prepared to clean your yoga mat after the class because it will get a little dirty.\nBring your own water and snack.\nThere are bathrooms available inside the Horticulture Center.\nAppropriate for adults and mature adolescents (minors must be ticketed and accompanied by a guardian).\nDue to the large size of the class\, we recommend yogis have at least one yoga class under their belt.\nThe temperature in the greenhouse can get fairly warm. We recommend wearing a t-shirt or tank top underneath winter layers.\nParking is available in the lot across from the Horticulture Center. Please do not leave valuables in your car!\nThere are two yoga classes being offered on each date – one from 10-11 AM and another from 11:15 AM-12:15 PM. The classes will be identical and led by the same instructor so we suggest only signing up for one each day. If attending the second class\, please note that you will not be able to enter the greenhouse until participants from the first class have left.\nParks and Rec staff are now locking the north entry gate behind the Please Touch Museum. The ONLY entrance available is the south entry off of Montgomery Drive.\nImportant pre-event information and any event updates are sent out via email. Please make sure the email address entered is correct and that you check it before coming out to the event.\n\n  \n\nPARKING/GETTING THERE: There is plenty of free parking in the lot across from the Fairmount Park Horticulture Center. As always\, never leave valuables in your car! PLEASE NOTE: if there’s no other event happening\, the Parks and Rec staff may close and lock the entry gate after class. We don’t recommend leaving your car in the lot after class has ended. If traveling by public transit\, the nearest stop is at Belmont Ave and South Georges Hill Drive – a half-mile walk from the start. The closest Indego bike station is at Parkside and Belmont Ave\, Case Building – one mile from the start.\n\n\nQUESTIONS? Please reach out to programs@myphillypark.org

Learn a little about the history of the area as well as the nocturnal animals that call the forest home. \nNext\, we’ll turn our attention to the sky with a guided moon and planet/star observation\, depending on the month. Novice and experienced astronomers alike will be given insights and tips by experienced instructor Buddy Muhler. Each attendee will have the chance to travel close up to the moon’s surface by looking through Buddy’s high-powered telescope! Buddy will discuss the lunar cycles and point out interesting visible surface features such as dark gray mares (seas) and white reflective highlands. We’ll gaze at planets or stars and discuss other astronomical wonders of the night sky. \nIf you’re a lunar lunatic\, this is an evening not to miss! \nINSTRUCTOR BIO: Buddy Muhler is a passionate astronomer and science educator. He has over 15 years of experience operating telescopes and educating the public on astronomy\, first at The Franklin Institute and now in his current position with The Academy of Natural Sciences. \nTICKET PRICE: $15 \n\nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO: \n\nWe will meet at the Morton McMichael statue at the intersection of Lemon Hill Drive and Sedgely Drive.\nThis hike is roughly one mile in length over a combination of open parkland and hilly trails (moderate exertion).\nPlease note\, new park gates have been installed in the Lemon Hill area. SUMMARY:Trails to Ales: Guided Hike + Drinks
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a brewing history hike through East Fairmount Park!\n\nDATE\nThursday\, July 31 \n\n\n\nTIME\n6:00 pm – 8:00 pm \n\n\n\nLOCATION\nMount Pleasant Mansion \n3800 Mt Pleasant Drive\nPhiladelphia PA 19121 \n\n\n\nJoin John Sigmund\, Fairmount Park Conservancy’s Director of Sponsorships and Partnerships\, for a hiking tour to explore the history of brewing and beer gardens around East Fairmount Park. Naturally\, we’ll end the hike at a modern-day park beer garden – the Waterworks Cider House and Beer Garden! \nAs the name of the Brewerytown neighborhood that borders East Park indicates\, Philadelphia was a beer-brewing town. In fact\, in the late 19th century\, with over 30 breweries\, we were the brewing capital of America! Before the city created the park\, the banks of the Schuylkill River were valuable to emerging breweries for the harvesting and storage of ice and for the cold storage of lager beer in underground vaults. Also\, after acquiring several historic houses with the establishment of Fairmount Park\, the city sought ways to re-adapt them and the properties were leased as beer gardens enjoyed by a growing German population. The hike will discuss this and many other intoxicating aspects of beer history in Fairmount Park. \nPLEASE NOTE: This is NOT a loop hike! It’s a one-way hike beginning at Mount Pleasant Mansion and ending at the Waterworks Cider House and Beer Garden. We strongly suggest using Uber/Lyft\, public transit\, or Indego bike share to arrive at the starting point so you do not have to return for your vehicle/bike. \n\nStarting Location: Mount Pleasant Mansion (3800 Mt Pleasant Drive\, Philadelphia PA 19121)\nEnding location: Waterworks Cider and Beer Garden (640 Waterworks Drive\, Philadelphia PA 19130)\n\n\nINSTRUCTOR BIO: John Sigmund is a multidisciplinary artist\, history lover\, and urban park enthusiast with years of experience as a nonprofit manager and arts educator. Born and raised in Philadelphia\, he spent a decade living in Austin\, San Antonio\, and New York City\, but made a happy homecoming to go back to school at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. John has the proud distinction of actually living in Fairmount Park– he and his partner\, Jaime\, are resident caretakers at Lemon Hill Mansion. And although Lemon Hill is his home base\, John is an enthusiastic advocate for all of the historic houses in the park system. \nABOUT COSMIC CAFE\, THE COSMIC FOUNDATION\, AND THE WATERWORKS CIDER AND BEER GARDEN: The Cosmic Foundation was founded in 2018 by Peg Botto\, owner and chef at Cosmic Catering. She has a background in Human Services as a QIDP (Qualified Intellectual Disabilities Professional) and has carried that experience with her in the food business. Cosmic hires and trains employees who have developmental disabilities. Most staff start out as dishwashers and then are trained in other areas. A percentage of all profits from Cosmic Cafe and the Waterworks Cider and Beer Garden go towards the Cosmic Foundation\, which helps disabled individuals learn valuable life skills that will help them in their everyday tasks. To find out more about the Cosmic Cafe/Foundation\, click here. \nTICKET PRICES: $10 \n\n\nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO: \n\nThe hike is roughly two miles over a combination of open parkland and hilly trails (moderate exertion).\nPlease dress according to weather conditions and wear good hiking shoes (boots/sneakers).\nBring your own water and snack (drinking water is not available in the park).\nBring bug spray and sunscreen.\nThere are bathrooms at the end location but not at the start or along the route\, so please plan accordingly.\nDrinks at the Waterworks Cider and Beer Garden are not part of the ticket cost.\nWell-behaved dogs on leashes are permitted on the hike and in the beer garden.\nSpecial notes for the beer garden: The beer garden is 21+ to enter with valid\, government-issued photo identification. Children\, families\, and anyone under 21 are welcome to join as long as they are accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.\n\n\nPARKING/GETTING THERE: There is plenty of free parking in the park. As always\, never leave valuables in your car! We strongly suggest using Uber/Lyft\, public transit\, or Indego bike share to arrive at the starting point so you do not have to return for your vehicle/bike. The closest bus stop/Indego station to the starting location is at 33rd and Oxford – a roughly 15-minute walk along Reservoir Drive to Mount Pleasant. \n\n\nQUESTIONS?: Feel free to reach out to programs@myphillypark.org. \n

Lynch has attributed inspiration for the setting to his time as a student in 1960s Philadelphia. Join us for a screening of this cult classic at 8:30 PM\, following a popup artists’ market at 7:00 PM and trivia hosted by the Philadelphia Film Society\, co-host of our outdoor cinema series. \nPlease note that Kelly Drive will be closed the day of the cinema\, so leave additional time for travel as the area will be more congested than usual. \nThis event is taking place during Love Your Park Week\, a citywide celebration of Philadelphia’s park system.

DESCRIPTION:Take part in the City Nature Challenge with a free guided bird walk led by Troy Bynum.\n\nDATE\nSunday\, April 27 \n\n\n\nTIME\n11:00 am – 1:30 pm \n\n\n\nLOCATION\nOhio House \n4700 States Drive\nPhiladelphia PA 19131 \n  \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and Troy Bynum of TB Wildlife Photography LLC on Sunday\, April 27 from 1 1 AM–1:30 PM for an introduction to the City Nature Challenge and the iNaturalist app followed by a guided bird hike in West Fairmount Park. \nThe City Nature Challenge (CNC) is an annual event where cities around the world compete to see who can record the most wildlife observations (plants and animals) on the iNaturalist app. While there is a friendly competition component of the CNC (click here to see how Philadelphia ranked last year)\, the observations made are also really important in helping scientists to track changes in wildlife populations over time. \nWe’ll start inside with a brief intro on how to use the iNaturalist app. Troy\, a skilled wildlife photographer and owner of TB Wildlife Photography LLC\, will also go over some helpful tips and tricks for using your phone’s camera outside. From there\, we’ll head out on a hike where Troy will guide us as we look and listen for birds in both open fields and more forested areas. As we hike\, participants are encouraged (but definitely not required) to use the iNaturalist app to take pictures of plants and animals to add to Philadelphia’s City Nature Challenge totals. \nAfter the hike\, we’ll return to Ohio House where staff will be available to assist with uploading any observations to iNaturalist. We’ll also have a monitor setup so we can see in real time all of the observations made throughout the park and city. \nLooking for another City Nature Challenge event in Fairmount Park? Check out our friends at the Discovery Center’s City Nature Challenge event on April 26. \nINSTRUCTOR BIO: Troy Bynum\, owner of TB Wildlife Photography LLC\, is not only an enthusiastic birder but also a passionate wildlife photographer from Philadelphia\, PA. Troy’s work focuses on capturing and showcasing the remarkable colors\, intricate patterns\, and rich textures that are abundant throughout the natural world.
