SUMMARY:Wellness Wednesday in West Park
DESCRIPTION:Join Fairmount Park Conservancy and Coach Shay of Inner Sanctuary Wellness on the last Wednesday of every month from 6:30–8 PM* for a wellness program set in the beautiful greenspace of West Fairmount Park. \nCoach Shay will blend together restorative yoga and sound healing practices\, allowing for gentle movement and meditation throughout. Participants will leave each program feeling rejuvenated and grounded. \nInterested in getting in a walk before the program? We Walk PHL will be leading a walk prior to each wellness program\, starting at 5:45 PM. If you plan to attend the walk as well\, you can register for that here. \n*Wellness Wednesdays are May-September. (Please note\, September’s program is from 5:45-7:15 PM to account for an earlier sunset.) \nABOUT COACH SHAY: Coach Shay is a fierce self-care/mental health advocate who educates and inspires others on best practices for living an easeful\, more balanced life. After years of working in high-demand corporate roles\, being deprived of rest and experiencing burnout\, she found healing and restoration in practicing yoga and mindfulness. Her journey ignited a passion to help others and in addition to teaching yoga\, she uses her gifts as a sound practitioner and holistic health coach as tools to help others destress and connect with their bodies and breath to find deep rest and healing. Her desire is to help all beings discover balance and vitality\, and as the founder of Inner Sanctuary Wellness\, she mindfully curates experiences and services that allow rest and offer rejuvenation for the mind\, body\, and soul. You can learn more about her work on Instagram at @coachshay2020. \nTICKETS: Free**\, donations appreciated. Registration is required.\n**We are proud to be able to offer these events for free. However\, there is limited capacity for the event. Last-minute cancellations and no-shows can take away tickets from others. We ask that you be mindful of this and please only register if you plan to attend. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO:\n-We will meet at Parkside Edge and then walk (less than half-mile) to a nearby location for the actual program.\n-Parkside Edge is located along Parkside Avenue in between West and East Memorial Drives. It comes up as ‘Parkside Park’ in most navigation apps.\n-Classes will take place in a grassy field.\n-Please bring your own yoga mat.\n-We recommend you bring something to place under your yoga mat\, such as a towel\, to keep it protected from “the elements” (grassy surface\, sometimes damp after recent rain\, etc.).\n-An eye mask/pillow is optional but nice to have for the sound bath portion.\n-Please note that this program is gentle\, restorative\, and slow\, focusing on stillness and relaxation. It may not be a perfect fit for those looking for more of a high-impact yoga class.\n-Appropriate for adults and mature adolescents (minors must be ticketed and accompanied by a guardian).\n-This event is held entirely outside so please dress according to weather conditions.\n-Bring your water (drinking water is not available in the park).\n-Unfortunately\, there are no bathrooms nearby so please plan accordingly.\n-Bring sunscreen and bug spray.\n-Space is limited in each program and registration is required. If you cannot attend an event\, please show courtesy to fellow parkgoers and try to cancel your registration with advance notice so that someone else can participate. Repeat no-shows may not be able to register for future free events.\n-Important pre-event information and any event updates are sent out via email. Please make sure the email address entered is correct and that you check it before coming out to the event. \nPARKING/GETTING THERE: Parkside Edge is located along Parkside Avenue in between West and East Memorial Drives. It comes up as ‘Parkside Park’ in most navigation apps. There is plenty of free parking in the park. As always\, never leave valuables in your car! If traveling by public transit\, the nearest bus stop is at Parkside and Belmont Ave – less than a quarter-mile walk. The nearest Indego bike station is also located at Parkside and Belmont Ave.

The name says it all — it’s the neighborhood beside West Fairmount Park. Similarly to Strawberry Mansion on the other side of the Schuylkill\, Parkside is where the city grid meets the greenspace\, buffered by a boulevard of grand homes facing the park. Much of the Parkside neighborhood was built during the 1876 Centennial Exhibition. Originally populated by German-Americans and Jewish immigrants of Russian descent\, after World War II\, the Great Migration coupled with ‘white flight’ transformed Parkside into a predominantly African-American neighborhood\, which it remains to this day. In 1983\, community organizers had the neighborhood listed on the National Register of Historic Places because of its cultural legacy and many fine examples of Victorian architecture. \nTour highlights include: \n\nCentennial Exposition model in Please Touch Museum\nSmith Memorial Arch\nParkside Apartments. (when built it was one of the tallest apartment buildings in the city)\nChrist Community Baptist Church (built from an Old synagogue)\nLansdowne Apartment Building built in 1897\nCentennial Commons\nPhiladelphia Stars Negro League Memorial Park and mural\n\n\nEstimated distance: about 2.5 miles\nLevel: easy to moderate\nTerrain: mainly flat sidewalks/trails\n \n\nTICKET PRICES: Pay what you can – $15\, $20\, or $25\n[ Not sure what to pay? Please refer to this Sliding Scale Pricing FAQ for additional info. ]\n\nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO: \n\nThe tour covers about 2.5 miles on foot. Not all areas will be ADA-accessible.\nAppropriate for adults and families with children ages 12 and up. Minors must be registered and accompanied by an adult.\nPlease wear comfortable shoes.\nPlease dress for weather conditions.\nBring your own water and snack (drinking water is not available in the park).\nThere are porta-potties available along the tour route.\nDogs on leashes are welcome; however\, you will not be able to enter the Please Touch Museum.\n\n\nPARKING/GETTING THERE: There is plenty of free parking available in the School of the Future parking lot closer to Girard Ave. As always\, never leave valuables in your car! If you are traveling by public transit\, the nearest station is at Parkside Ave and 40th Street. The nearest Indego bike station is roughly 1/2 mile away at the Philadelphia Zoo (1046 North 34th Street). \n\nQUESTIONS? Please reach out to programs@myphillypark.org

The family-friendly selection of movies will be accompanied by an all-day food and craft market in the boathouse\, featuring the Mercado de Latinas — a vendor collective started during the pandemic to support women entrepreneurs. Process-based artist Eugenio Salas will lead cooking demonstrations on his Communal Griddle** — a fogón-style stove made from waste materials that utilizes upcycled ingredients. In addition to live cooking\, the boathouse will have environmental art installations and interactive activities that promise to bring people together through the power of food and art! \nGrab a blanket or lawn chair and bring your family\, friends\, and neighbors. There will be lawn games\, live music\, prizes\, food trucks\, and more at ¡CineMÁS! The movie and performances are free. The food trucks and market are pay-as-you-go. Knight Foundation and the Philadelphia Housing Development Corporation\, brings communities together through the power of food. Created by artist Eugenio Salas\, the series combines traditional cooking with improvisational design to offer a unique and immersive culinary experience. The Communal Griddle project consists of a series of events hosted in urban gardens and parks\, each featuring local community leaders cooking on a stove made from waste materials and utilizing upcycled ingredients. Each event features live cooking\, environmental art\, and interactive activities.
