Wewill talk about the natural history and ecological value of the pawpaw tree. We will also talk about the cultivation of pawpaws\, culinary uses\, and how you can grow them in your own gardens. During the talk we will walk around the nursery and view some of our specimen pawpaw trees. We will also talk about grafted varieties of pawpaws. Curious why you do not see them at your local supermarket? We will talk about that too! This talk is informal and open discussion is encouraged\, so please bring your questions. \nThis event is rain or shine\, so please bring an umbrella and wear proper shoes. \nThe program is geared towards adults and interested teens\, but you are welcome to bring your children. \nIn the event of extreme weather\, we may need to cancel and postpone the event. \nThis event is free\, but we still ask you register so we know how many people will attend. SUMMARY:"Four Seasons" Native Container Garden Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Happy Customer Appreciation Week! If you have always wanted a container garden of native plants\, this is the workshop for you. Join us!\n\n\nOur Container Workshops are always a lot of fun\, so of course we have to have one during Customer Appreciation Week! Our staff chose a nice mixture of plants with multi-season interest so your container always has something pretty to look at. \nIf you don’t know where to start with planting a native container garden\, then this workshop is for you! We’ll demonstrate planting techniques and talk about plant selection. There will be a quick walk to see some containers on display\, but most of this workshop will be standing at a table. Accomodations can be made if needed! \nInstructions for where to place containers over winter will be discussed so containers can be displayed each year. \nThis workshop will be held at our potting table and participants will stand to make their containers. \nBRING YOUR OWN CONTAINER. Bring a planter of your choosing approximately 16″-20″ diameter and at least 11″ deep. If you need help selecting one\, let us know. If your container is deeper than 13″ please let us know so we can be prepared because soil will be provided. \nPlease note\, this workshop is limited to 10 participants. Everyone making their own container needs to purchase a ticket. If a couple is working on just one container to share\, please only purchase 1 ticket. If both want to make their own container\, please purchase 2 tickets. \nThis workshop will happen rain or shine. However\, in the case of severe or dangerous weather we will need to cancel the workshop. We will notify you of cancellation at the email address you provided to register for the workshop.

SUMMARY:Sun Prints with Native Plants
DESCRIPTION:Monday August 17 10 AM.    Create your own sun prints – aka cyanotypes – with plants from our nursery!\n\n\nThis quick and easy project is fun for all ages. We encourage folks from any age group to sign up! \nRegistration fee includes two 5×7 prints. \nWe’ll begin with a brief history of cyanotype photography – also called “sun prints”\, its connection to botany\, and the process of developing these unique prints. \nThen participants will gather leaves\, flowers\, and other objects from our grounds to create their very own cyanotype prints! PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN GARDEN CLIPPERS IF YOU CAN. You are also welcome to bring your own objects to include in your prints (flat objects work best including keys\, jewelry\, lace fabric\, etc).  \n$10 per participant\, due at time of event. Registration fee includes two 5×7 prints. \nExpect this workshop to take approximately 60 minutes. The duration will take place outdoors. Please wear proper clothes and shoes and bring necessary sun protection. \nMinimum recommended age is 5 years old. Children must be accompanied by an adult. If only the child is making Sunprints\, purchase one ticket and they will make two sundrints. If the adult and child are EACH making sunprints\, purchase two tickets. The adult will make 2 sunprints and the child will make 2 sunprints. \nIn the event of rain\, we will likely need to cancel the sun prints workshop. SUMMARY:Meet Live Raptors and Other PA Wildlife with the CCEEC
DESCRIPTION:Rehabilitators and Naturalists from the CCEEC will talk about PA Native Wildlife. Meet some of their raptors and other live animals!\n\n\nPlease join us for this special event as we host Wildlife Rehabilitators and Naturalists from the Carbon County Environmental Education Center to talk about PA Native Wildlife. The CEECC has been helping injured wildlife and promoting “Conservation through Education” since 1985. It sits on 70 acres of woodlands\, wetlands\, and meadows within Mauch Chunk State Park in Jim Thorpe\, PA.  \nThe CCEEC specializes in educating the public about wildlife\, conservation\, importance of habitats\, and wildlife rehabilitation. It is a discovery hub for children and adults who can visit the center for free to hike the trails and view their many exhibits including an impressive collection of skulls\, taxidermy\, live reptiles and amphibians\, and their resident non-releasable hawks\, eagles\, and owls. They have a small wildlife hospital and trained veterinary staff on site who help injured and orphaned wild animals.  \nThe CCEEC Staff will talk about PA Native Wildlife and why their conservation is so important. They will bring some of their ambassador\, non-releasable raptors (birds of prey) as well as reptiles and maybe more for you to see up close.  There will also be a selection of interesting things such as furs\, feathers\, bones\, and shells that you will be able to touch and handle (awesome for the kids!).  \nThis talk is open to all ages\, and we encourage you to bring your children and grandchildren. Because there will be live animals\, we are emphasizing their importance of respecting them and their handlers by being seated quietly during the talk. We will provide folding chairs\, but feel free to bring your own camp chair if you prefer it.  \nThis event costs $15 to attend per person. Please be sure to get a ticket for everyone in your family that is attending (except children ages 4 and under are free and do not need to be registered). Proceeds from this event are used to pay our speaker fee. Please also consider bringing a donation for the CEECC  to help fund their wildlife rehabilitation efforts and facility maintenance\, if you are able.  \nIn the event of inclement weather\, we will likely need to postpone or cancel this event. Please provide an email that you check regularly when you register in case of any need for cancellation.

DESCRIPTION:Curious about native plants? This “talk and walk” is a great opportunity to learn about the importance of native plants and what we do.\n\n\nEvery day\, more and more people are hearing about and gaining an interest in native plants. We are here to help both new and seasoned gardeners with their garden needs and provide the highest quality native plants to them\, as well as educating about the ecological value these plants provide. We understand there is a lot of information out there\, and getting started can be daunting. So\, what better day than Earth Day to celebrate native plants and talk about why they are important and why they make wonderful additions to your gardens and landscapes.  \nThis talk is geared towards “beginners” but everyone could learn something new! Our horticulturalist\, Brandon\, will walk around the nursery display gardens with you to talk about the value\, cultivation\, and nuances of native plants. Learn what actually classifies plants as “native”\, why birds and butterflies need native plants\, why biodiversity is important\, what threats do native plants face\, and how to get started planting native plants in your own gardens and landscapes. This will be an informal\, open discussion based talk\, so please bring your questions and feel free to actively engage.  \nThis talk is mostly geared for adults and interested teens\, but you are welcome to bring your children. We will be mostly walking around and stopping at various areas of the nursery\, but we can go at a pace comfortable for the group. Expect the talk to last between 60 and 90 minutes.  \nThis event is rain or shine\, so bring an umbrella and wear proper shoes for the weather. In the event of extreme or dangerous weather\, we will cancel and postpone the event.  \nThis event is FREE to attend but we ask you register so we have an idea of how many people will be attending.
