SUMMARY:A PET RISO STUDIO TOUR AT THE BOK
DESCRIPTION:Join DVAA on a field trip to the Bok and see our current exhibiting artists at work.\n\n\nWe’re taking a fun galavant over to the Bok building! \nMeet us at 1901 S 9th St\, #1N on Saturday\, September 20th for an exciting chance to see our exhibiting artists Pet Riso in their Studio. Grab a coffee from Two Persons Coffee and see our “Friend of a Friend of a Friend” artists at work. \nIt’s sure to be a good time! \n \nAbout the Exhibition \nWhat do you visualize when you imagine an artist making their work? The cliché we often see in media is an artist working alone in their studio\, struggling over an easel. But art is rarely made in isolation. Collaboration is a defining characteristic of the Philadelphia cultural ecosystem\, and one that’s especially defined within the Printmaking community. Printmaking\, by nature\, invites shared space\, shared tools\, and shared knowledge. Friend of a Friend of a Friend explores the friendship between Ben Kraemer and Claire Cooke\, est. 2017 at Tyler School of Art\, and how their connection\, through their joint practice at Pet Riso Studio and beyond\, reflects a broader culture of interdependence. Here\, friendship isn’t just a social bond\, it’s a defining characteristic of creating form. \n \nAbout the Artists \nBen Kraemer is an artist and printmaker living and working in Philadelphia. His artistic practice has largely focused on the creation of artists’ books\, zines\, and other printed matter. His body of work investigates the role of memory in the formation of identity and has drawn inspiration and context from his multi-racial background. This has culminated in drawings\, prints and books containing family photographs\, imagery from film and television\, and appropriated cultural icons. \nHe holds a BFA in Printmaking from the Tyler School of Art and since 2022 has been running the collaborative printshop Pet Riso Studio with Claire Cooke. \nClaire Cooke works primarily through photographic printmaking processes\, with her most recent focus being risography. With degrees in both Printmaking and Art History\, Claire references the historical aspect of printmaking\, i.e. mass-production\, merchandising\, and commercial engagement\, and turns it around on itself by creating absurd\, humorous\, and satirical printed matter. Claire sources her imagery from content posted on social media platforms\, stock photos\, and even photos living in her own camera roll\, and gives them a life outside of the digital landscape. This gives us a chance to appreciate the technicality of the mediums she works in and her ability to create visually-interesting pieces\, while also enjoying the absurdity of the pieces themselves. It allows us to contemplate the consumption of mass-media without feeling overwhelmed by it all\, instead giving us a silly reminder that we can take something seen as superficial and make it something to behold!

Inspired by recipes passed down from her grandfather\, a Lebanese chef\, she set out to share the region’s rich flavors and cultural traditions through food. What began as a fundraiser for the Lebanese Red Cross quickly evolved into pop-ups\, modern catering spreads\, and a growing Philly following obsessed with her seasonal mezze – and of course\, her family recipe for creamy\, flavor-packed hummus. \n \nBinding Agents Nestled in Philadelphia’s culinary epicenter\, the 9th Street Italian Market\, Binding Agents is a bookstore for anyone who loves food. Founded in 2024\, the shop specializes in cookbooks\, offering an extensive collection of contemporary and classic titles for experienced chefs\, aspiring home cooks\, eager eaters who hate turning on the oven\, and everyone in between. They also carry a carefully curated selection of food-focused reads\, including delicious memoirs\, craveable fiction\, savory (and unsavory) history and scrumptious books for kids. \n \nDVAA Founded by 16 Italian immigrants seeking creative refuge\, Da Vinci Art Alliance continues to connect diverse communities through art that challenges\, empowers\, and transforms. Approaching a century of service\, we remain a vital force in Philadelphia’s cultural landscape\, equipping artists to reimagine the future and confront today’s challenges.

SUMMARY:Woven Stories: An Introduction to Mindful Weaving
DESCRIPTION:Join Linda Ruggiero for an afternoon of mindful weaving. In this free\, all-levels workshop\, participants will learn the basics of weaving.\n\n\nJoin Linda Ruggiero for an afternoon of mindful weaving. In this all-levels workshop\, participants will learn the basics of hand weaving and will create a unique textile wall hanging. \nWe will begin class with an introduction to weaving on a frame loom\, and students will learn the basics of warping and weaving the basic stitch: plain weave. Once comfortable with these techniques\, each student will be asked to consider a story or memory in their personal life that they would like to represent in their textile. Using color cards and color psychology theory\, students will choose fabrics\, yarn\, and threads that represent elements of their stories to create their own personalized weavings. Participants will be invited to hang their work in the gallery space until the end of the exhibition\, or they can take their work home with them. \n \nNo experience needed; all materials provided. If you have your own fabric or yarn scraps that you would like to use\, please feel free to bring them. \n \nDVAA uses art to connect people and build collective resilience in spaces across Greater Philadelphia. SUMMARY:Philly Dreamin’: Personal Narratives in Mixed Media
DESCRIPTION:In this reflective\, hands-on workshop\, you’ll create a mixed-media vision board that tells your story.\n\n\nIn this reflective\, hands-on workshop\, you’ll create a mixed-media vision board that tells your story. Expressing how the past\, present\, and future are all connected. Inspired by the Currere method\, we’ll use art to explore personal experiences and imagine your future. \nAs we work\, we’ll also consider how dreaming can be a powerful act. Dreaming allows us to reflect on ourselves\, our communities\, and our hopes for the future. Through creative expression and optional conversation\, we’ll gently explore themes like dreams\, belonging\, and representation in community and art. \nDVAA uses art to connect people and build collective resilience in spaces across Greater Philadelphia. Help support this sliding-scale event—and many more like it—with a donation of $10–$25! All DVAA programming is NOTAFLOF (No One Turned Away for Lack of Funds). If cost is a barrier\, email marketing@davinciartalliance.org to request a free ticket.

SUMMARY:Philly Dreamin' & Becoming
DESCRIPTION:Solo Show of Artist and Educator Dominique Samarco. \nDreams are powerful—they shape our aspirations\, offer direction\, and serve as blueprints for a better future. To build the life we envision\, we must first dare to dream. As educators\, it is our responsibility to nurture and inspire students to transform their dreams into reality. Art educators\, in particular\, play a vital role in helping students manifest their visions\, as dreams are the foundation of success. \nDreaming has been central to my journey. Vivid\, colorful images of my future have always guided me\, a perspective reflected in my artwork. Growing up in Philadelphia—the poorest major city in America—dreams often serve as a beacon of hope\, a means of escaping hardship and achieving stability. My paintings are a visual narrative of my past\, present\, and future—interwoven with my hopes\, challenges\, and growth. \nThis body of work retraces my personal journey and connection to my community through the lens of equity and currere\, an educational method that explores experience in four stages: regressive\, progressive\, analytical\, and synthetic. By revisiting my past and envisioning my future\, I have examined how these timelines intersect to shape my present. My paintings depict meaningful places in Philadelphia\, bridging personal history with the collective experience of my community. Through this work\, I aim to highlight the importance of representation in fine art—how seeing one’s home and experiences reflected in art can foster a sense of belonging\, particularly for those who have historically lacked access to artistic spaces. \nAs both an artist and educator\, I draw from my experiences growing up in a working-class family in Philadelphia. I am the first in my family to pursue higher education\, a journey shaped by resilience and determination. My work reflects not only my own dreams but also my commitment to educational equity and city-based youth. \nPhiladelphia’s deep financial disparities underscore the need for opportunity\, access\, and visibility. These paintings are my visual “Why”—a fusion of dreamlike optimism and gritty realism that embodies my life’s journey and the realities of the students I serve. Together\, we navigate our pasts\, presents\, and futures\, mirroring the broader human experience. \nThis series is a tribute—to my community\, my aspirations\, and the enduring power of dreams. \nPhilly Dreamin’ & Becoming will be on view in Gallery 1 from May 1 – May 25\, 2025 with an opening reception on Sunday\, April 4th from 4-7pm.

SUMMARY:Building Community-Centered Practices
DESCRIPTION:Our next Creative Conversations will explore “Building Community-Centered Practices” with Jeannette Lloyd & Kathryn Pannepacker\n\n\nEvery quarter\, DVAA hosts Creative Conversations\, an event open to both our community and the general public. The objective of this program is to explore the nitty-gritty of professional development within artistic practice. \nThe next in our Creative Conversations series will explore “Building Community-Centered Practices” with prominent Philly Arts Leaders Jeannette Lloyd & Kathryn Pannepacker on Sunday\, April 13\, 12–2 PM. \nAs speaker Pannepacker states\, “Times are intense. Let’s take care of ourselves and one another!” In our volatile and unstable times community is the only thing we can rely on. In this thoughtful presentation and discussion\, we’ll explore how to meaningful build resilience and solidarity in Philly’s current arts landscape. \nJeanette Lloyd is a multi-disciplinary artist and creative producer that choreographs complex community and cultural projects with ease. She is kindred and servant of the underserved\, and thrives working behind the scenes to curate and amplify powerful experiences and marginalized voices. Her passion for art\, background in entertainment\, and professional experience in marketing and partnerships allows her to advise and collaborate with a diverse group of people. Jeanette currently works as the Director of Marketing for Asian Arts Initiative and advises many local individuals and collectives on artistic strategy. \n \nKathryn Pannepacker is a textile/visual/community artist living in Germantown/Philadelphia\, PA. She graduated from Penn State University back in the late 80’s with a major in English and a minor in art. Her studies continued with numerous intensive apprenticeships\, nationally and abroad. She has done many projects with Mural Arts Philadelphia and other organizations over the years with folks of all ages and backgrounds. \nKathryn exhibits locally\, nationally and internationally\, and has work in private and public collections. She balances her time doing studio work\, and art as harm reduction & wellness support with folks in active addiction\, many of whom are unsheltered in Kensington at the Sunshine House and Prevention Point Philadelphia. She believes that creating an environment of belonging\, meaning and purpose is a critical component for any wellness journey as the nation scrambles for solutions during an epidemic of addiction\, isolation and despair. \nKathryn has received numerous grants including The Leeway Foundation’s Transformation Award and The Pollination Project. Her work has been featured on the cover of AMERICAN CRAFT and in many other publications. She offers hands-on workshops and presentations about art and social change. \nKathryn is delighted and honored to be apart of this afternoon’s conversation … Da Vinci Art Alliance has a very special place in her heart\, as back in the mid 1990’s she helped to re-invigorate it from it’s once sleepy state. These Community Conversations here at DVAA are vital. May that the work we each do come from a heart-centered place. Times are intense. Let’s take care of ourselves and one another! \nLook for Kathryn’s solo exhibition in Sept./Oct. at William Way LGBT Community Center called “You are Welcome Here; I Saved A Chair for You.” \n \nAccessibility Information \nDVAA is a historic row home in the Bella Vista neighborhood. We are not yet wheelchair accessible; Da Vinci is a three floor gallery with narrow staircases. (We are working towards becoming ADA accessible by 2027!) It is 5 steps up to the first floor level\, and 14 steps from the first to second floor\, where the gender-neutral bathroom is located. Da Vinci has masks and COVID tests available at our events. We can reserve seats for low-vision and Deaf and HoH community members as needed. DVAA exhibitions are free to visit and all of our programs are free or suggested donation. SUMMARY:NATURAL EMOTIONS - A Carlos A. Gil Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Da Vinci Art Alliance is proud to present “NATURAL EMOTIONS\,” an exhibition of dimensional collage by Carlos Gil.\n\n\nJoin us at the Da Vinci Art Alliance on Sunday\, March 2nd at 3 pm for a look into the creative mind of Carlos Gil as they give a talk surrounding their new exhibition. \nSince photography’s inception\, the image-making technology has been associated with reality. Yet it is within these assumptions of truth that we are most likely to fall into illusion. Da Vinci Art Alliance is proud to present “NATURAL EMOTIONS\,” an exhibition of dimensional collage by Carlos Gil. \nThe latest evolution of Gil’s multi-decade practice\, this exhibition utilizes collage and photography to deconstruct narratives we infer from photography and the fictions we tell ourselves about our relationship with the natural world. \n \nBorn in Caracas\, Venezuela\, Carlos studied at the “Cristobal Rojas” School of Arts from 1956-60\, and has participated in residencies and studies in Amsterdam\, Holland\, Belgrade\, Yugoslavia\, Zaragoza and Spain\, as well as taking photography courses at the Photographic Society of Aragon. Gil has lived and worked in Philadelphia since 1994\, and his work has been shown both locally and internationally over the course of his decades-long career. Gil alters what seems-to-be by way of mutations\, formation and deformation\, trying to dispel the illusion of reality created by the camera. With this in mind\, he simultaneously captures the beauty of the natural environment\, and the contours threatened by climate change and rampant man-made destruction.

SUMMARY:Teaching In and Out of Academic Settings: A Creative Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with Cindy Stockton Moore and Laura Hricko! Join us to learn about their personal teaching practices\n\n\nOnce a quarter\, DVAA hosts Creative Conversations to gather and get into the nitty gritty of professional development within our artistic practice. DVAA uses art to connect people and build collective resilience in spaces across Greater Philadelphia. Please consider a donation of $10 to support this event and more like it! \nFor this session of Creative Conversations\, join us for a conversation with Cindy Stockton Moore and Laura Hricko. They will be talking about their experiences Teaching In and Out of Academic Settings. Join us to learn about their personal teaching practices\, how they do outreach to students and partners\, building relationships with spaces\, personal boundaries learned through trial and error\, how their teaching practices have been integrated in other spaces\, and more! Throughout their conversation there will be room for questions from the audience. \n \nCindy Stockton Moore is a Philadelphia based artist\, writer\, educator and arts worker. Prior to transitioning out of the adjunct circuit\, Cindy taught at Moore\, UArts\, Drexel\, and eight additional colleges and universities in the tri-state area.  She now leads workshops in conjunction with mission-aligned spaces focused on natural materials and land stewardship.  In the studio\, she uses aqueous media to create multimedia animations\, works on paper\, and site-specific projects; installations currently on view (2025) include ’an openness to all things lovely’ at Glen Foerd and ‘Other Absences’ at Eastern State Penitentiary. Cindy’s writing on art has appeared in FlashArt\, ArtNews\, NYArts Magazine\, ArtBlog\, SciArt Magazine\, The New York Sun\, and Title Magazine in addition to university and web publications. \nLaura Hricko is an artist\, educator\, and lifelong Philadelphian. Her practice spans multiple fiber art techniques\, including quilting\, mending\, embroidery\, and textile surface design–driven by a deep curiosity about the historical and social significance of materials and processes. Recently\, she has immersed herself in natural dyeing\, using these ancient craft techniques to coax color from homegrown flowers\, foraged plants\, and food-waste materials. After more than a decade as a higher education administrator\, Laura transitioned to a teaching artist role\, where she now focuses on creating hands-on natural dye experiences that encourage students to rethink their relationship with textiles\, the natural world\, and consumption. \n \nJoin us on March 2nd at 12pm to learn from these two incredible artists!

Join us from 4-5pm on February 15th on their fifth floor gallery for an artist talk and light bites. \nOver the last few years\, Thomas has explored the relationship between the black body as a landscape of restoration and self-preservation. SUMMARY:Exquisite Corpses . . . A Workshop
DESCRIPTION:A game popularized by surrealists in the 1920s\, Exquisite Corpse unfolds as a collaborative drawing process in which each participant draws on one section of a folded piece of paper and passes it on to the next participant to fill in another section\, and so on and so forth.\nIn a parallel structure to “. . .” we have set up three-part corpses. Each section of a corpse can be completed one after the other (revealing the corpse to all three participants once it’s been completed)\, or anyone can choose to fill in one section of a corpse\, and leave it for others to fill in during a later time in the workshop. \nWe have no boundaries on what methods of creation can be applied to this activity. Participants can draw\, write\, paint\, cut up\, collage\, etc.

SUMMARY:Dot Dot Dot
DESCRIPTION:You see an … (An ellipsis\, that is.) Is it a pause? A trailing thought? A suggestion of something unsaid? In a lingual system made up of definitions\, the ellipsis defies defining—so what are we to make of these three dots? In “…”\, an exhibition proudly presented by Da Vinci Art Alliance\, artists Daisy Diamond and Olivia Guarnieri explore this symbol of ambiguity\, and the myriad meanings it can contain. \nThis exhibition will be on view from December 5 – December 22\, with an opening reception on Saturday\, December 7 from 4-7 pm.

SUMMARY:Experimental Woven Collage Making with Sammy Kovnat (SKOVeS)
DESCRIPTION:his experimental collage class will teach participants to make their own paper collage weavings! We will explore the idea of finding healing through intuitive art making and getting lost in the process of creating\, by weaving together strips of different colored paper\, mixing in other collaged elements\, and letting the materials and process dictate what our creations become. \nDVAA uses art to connect people and build collective resilience in spaces across Greater Philadelphia. Please consider a donation of $10 to support this event and more like it! \nAbout the Exhibition: What do we do with the shards of something broken—especially when the thing that’s been broken is the self? This is the question at the heart of “Finding Healing in the Remnants\,” an exhibition of work by multimedia artist Sammy Kovnat (SKOVeS) proudly presented by Da Vinci Art Alliance. Rebuilding has a reputation for being painful—but what if there were comfort to be found in the familiarity of the pieces? \nLearn more at: davinciartalliance.org \nDVAA is a historic row home in the Bella Vista neighborhood. SUMMARY:A DVAA Screening of "The Invisible Man" (1933)
DESCRIPTION:Join us at DVAA for a special screening of James Whale’s 1933 classic “The Invisible Man”. Popcorn and candy will be provided at the event. DVAA uses art to connect people and build collective resilience in spaces across Greater Philadelphia. Please consider a donation of $10 to support this event and more like it! \nAbout the Movie: While researching a new drug\, Dr. Jack Griffin stumbles on a potion that can make him invisible. When he reveals his new ability to his old mentor and his fiancée\, it’s clear that a side effect of the potion is insanity. Jack goes on a violent rampage\, and the police struggle to hunt him down\, unable to see their target\, while his mentor and his former partner desperately try to devise a plan to capture him. \nThis is an accompanying event of Colin Pezzano’s Group Exhibition “Materialize”. \nAbout the Exhibition: Craft Movie Club presents: Materialize explores the intersection of classic cinema and contemporary craft practices. Sixteen artists\, working in their chosen material of ceramics\, wood\, fiber\, metal\, and glass\, respond to James Whale’s 1933 classic\, The Invisible Man. In the film\, invisibility is made possible through the extraction of a flower used originally to bleach textiles. Just as the scientist Griffin transforms himself by manipulating the natural world\, these artists transform raw materials into powerful\, symbolic objects. Ninety-one years later\, the film’s themes of invisibility\, scientific experimentation\, and ethical dilemmas remain relevant. This exhibition redefines expectations\, blending experimental techniques with traditional crafts to provoke thought and inspire a modern audience.

SUMMARY:Materialize
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition: Da Vinci Art Alliance is proud to partner with Craft Movie Club to present “Materialize\,” an exhibition that showcases sixteen artists\, all working in their chosen material of ceramics\, wood\, fiber\, metal and glass to respond to James Whale’s 1933 classic\, “The Invisible Man.” \nIn the film\, scientist Jack Griffin uses an extraction from an obscure flower—originally used to bleach textiles—to render himself invisible. How\, “Materialize” asks\, do the artists on display mirror the scientist at the heart of the film? How do they manipulate the natural world to transform their raw materials into powerful\, symbolic objects? And do they\, in performing their craft\, ever transform themselves? \nMaterialize will be on view in Gallery 1 at Da Vinci Art Alliance starting October 31 until November 17. The opening reception will take place on Saturday\, November 2\, from 4-7 pm.
