DESCRIPTION:Meeting at Houston Playground (900 Grakyn Lane)\nCelebrate the Summer Solstice in the Wissahickon! \nJoin Trail Ambassadors Melinda Spink and Melvin Chappell for a guided hike through Houston Meadow\, as we welcome the turning of the seasons from spring to summer. The summer solstice officially arrives the day before our hike\, so we will celebrate the first full day of summer. We’ll walk the trails\, enjoying the signs of summer—longer\, warmer days and the full green canopy of leaves in the park. Along the way\, we’ll share fascinating facts and lore about the solstice. Come celebrate nature’s balance and the beauty of the change in seasons. \nDistance: 2.5 miles\nDifficulty Level: Moderate (some inclines and declines\, uneven surfaces)\nAudience: All Ages\nParking and Transit: There is usually plenty of street parking on Sequoia Road and Grakyn Lane\, and you can find additional parking on the surrounding neighborhood streets. Bus 62 (9th-Market to Andorra) stops right next to the playground on Wissahickon Avenue and Grakyn Lane. DESCRIPTION:Meeting at Northwestern Avenue Kiosk (Northwestern Avenue and Forbidden Drive)\nParking and Transit: There is plenty of parking in the Northwestern Avenue Parking Area near our meeting location\, as well as additional free parking on nearby neighborhood streets. The nearest bus stop at Germantown Ave and Northwestern Ave is a 5-minute\, flat walk from our meeting location and services the 51 and 97 buses. If you’re coming from the Roxborough side of the park\, the nearest stop is at Ridge Ave and Northwestern Ave which services the 27 bus. See map for details.\nBathrooms: Porta potties at Northwestern\nDistance: 2 miles\nDifficulty Level: Easy (flat walking)\nAudience: Ages 12+ \nJoin Trail Ambassadors Sheryl Rose\, Leigh Ashbrook\, and Dave Cohen on an adventure to appreciate and learn about birds and trees. As we stroll up and down Forbidden Drive\, we’ll observe birds and enjoy their evening songs. DESCRIPTION:Meeting at Crefeld Street Trailhead (8900 Crefeld Street)\nDistance: 4 miles\nLevel: Moderate (some inclines and declines\, uneven surfaces)\nAudience: 18 years old+\nParking and Transit: If you’re coming by car\, there is nearby street parking all along Crefeld Street. The nearest transit options are the 51 and 97 buses at Germantown Ave & Norman Ln and the Chestnut Hill West train station. See map for details.\nBathrooms: No \nJoin Trail Ambassadors Pat Jacona and Margaret Kinnevy on a silent hike along the Lavender Trail. Focus your mind and body as we as silently walk some of the most beautiful trails in the park. This peaceful experience\, while the sun is low on the horizon\, will culminate in a view of the sun setting over the creek (weather permitting\, of course). There will also be time to connect with your fellow hikers. This will be a moderately paced fitness hike of 4 miles with a good stretch of rocky terrain. \nRegistration is required for all hikes so that participants can be informed of weather or other emergency cancellations. Airy Avenue and Mt. Airy Terrace and a stop for Bus 53 on Sedgwick Street & Wayne Ave. See map for details.\nRestrooms: There will be a composting toilet available for use at Kitchen’s Lane. \nJoin Trail Ambassadors Doug Gibson\, Courtney Malley\, Jill Curatolo\, and Peter Curatolo for a leisurely\, kids centered family-friendly loop hike in the Wissahickon\, paced to the age and abilities of participants. Starting at the Mt. Airy Trailhead\, we’ll head toward Frog Pond to talk about stormwater management and how frogs survive and thrive year round. We’ll continue along the White Trail to Kitchen’s Lane\, with stops to share the history of the mill\, bridge\, and surrounding landscape. \nThe hike will also pass through the Monastery grounds\, where we’ll see the historic house and barn and learn about the site’s origins. If we are lucky\, we will see some of the horses and donkeys that live there. Along the way\, children can participate in a nature bingo activity\, and we’ll pause to observe mosses\, fungi\, and plants we encounter. \nAll children must be accompanied by an adult; no dogs except for service animals\, please. \nRegistration is required for all events so that participants can be informed of weather or other emergency cancellations. DESCRIPTION:Meeting at Northwestern Avenue and Forbidden Drive (200 W Northwestern Ave)\nParking: There should be plenty of parking in the nearby Northwestern Ave Parking Area. See map for details.\nBathrooms: Porta potties at Northwestern Ave\nDistance: 7 miles\, with options to shorten it\nDifficulty Level: Moderate (some inclines and declines\, uneven surfaces)\nAudience: Ages 18+\nRain Date: Sunday\, July 5 \nThe Wissahickon is known for its hilly\, rocky terrain\, but it is also the home of three meadows! Join Trail Ambassadors Lisa Kleiman and Susie Gettes for an early 7-8 mile hike linking these three meadows as we enjoy the morning light\, the sounds of the birds\, and the varying terrain. \nThe hike will be at a moderate pace over hilly rocky trails which may be muddy. Restroom stop 1/4 of a mile into the hike. For those interested in a shorter distance\, hikers will have the option to return to the starting point after looping through each meadow. Those interested in additional exploration will also have the option to explore one of the feeder creeks in the park\, adding 1.5 miles to the total distance. This will primarily be an exploration/fitness hike\, but we will stop briefly to discuss the history of each meadow. \nRegistration is required for all events so that participants can be informed of weather or other emergency cancellations. DESCRIPTION:Meeting at Houston Playground (900 Grakyn Lane)\nJoin Debbie Hoellein\, Jim McClory\, and Paul Ricker on a summer hike in the Wissahickon. We’ll be hiking on both sides of the creek\, through meadow and woods. Courtesy Stable is on our route along with 2 bridges. We’ll see what is growing and blooming in July.
