SUMMARY:Clothing Swap at STITCH AND DESTROY
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to donate your clothing to STITCH AND DESTROY? Now you can at our monthly Clothing Swaps! Bring your unwanted clothing and textiles- wearable or not- and take home something new. Any clothing and textiles left over from the swap will be used to create our upcycled fashions. Our monthly Clothing Swaps will take place every last Saturday of the month unless otherwise stated. \nWhy a clothing swap? We want to keep as much textile waste out of the landfill as possible\, but first we want this clothing to be worn by our community. While our upcycled garments are made only from textile waste (and we save every scrap)\, the most sustainable garment is what’s already in your (or someone else’s) closet. Plus\, we only have so much storage space 🙂 \nBring a maximum of 20 garments or textiles to STITCH AND DESTROY at any time during the Clothing Swap hours (noon-5pm)\, and take home as many garments from the swap as you’d like! There will be clothing that is damaged/unwearable so if you upcycle too\, this swap is also for you! You do not have to bring clothing to take clothing and vice-versa. This is a FREE event. RSVP ticket not required. Any items brought to the swap and not taken during the event are considered donated to STITCH AND DESTROY. SUMMARY:Designing Layered Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:Are you seeking a design process to build a resilient native garden that wildlife loves and weeds struggle to take root? Inspiration from nature is our best teacher when we create ecosystems in human spaces. We will practice drawing to scale the anatomy of a designed ecosystem\, from essential native groundcovers or “green mulch” to structural canopy trees.\nThis program takes place in-person at Mt. Cuba Center Saturday\, April 26\, 2025.\nAbout the Instructor:\nElyse Jurgen\, owner of Waxwing EcoWorks Co.\, rebuilds ecological literacy and biodiversity through hands-on ecological gardening experiences for all ages. She is CBLP Certified\, Ecological/Permaculture Certified Designer\, Mt. Cuba Center Ecological Gardening Certified\, and holds a Master’s Degree in Environmental Education. She facilitates trainings and certificates for home gardeners and landscaping crews and coordinates Lancaster Schoolyard Habitat. In addition\, Elyse uses a participatory approach with land owners\, during the design/install/steward process\, to maximize the potential in enhancing human well-being and supporting dwindling wildlife populations.

SUMMARY:Wissahickon Valley Park Rim to Rim\, Part Two with Lisa Kleiman\, Debra Brackett\, and Sheryl Neckritz
DESCRIPTION:Photo courtesy of Melvin Chappell\nMeeting at 100 Steps\n 100 Steps\, courtesy of Gordon Henderson\nHiking Rim to Rim in Wissahickon Valley Park may not offer the same ‘bragging rights’ as a rim to rim hike of the Grand Canyon\, but it will surely provide you with beautiful scenery\, a rewarding hike on both sides of Wissahickon Creek\, wonderful views\, and friendly folks to enjoy it with! Come join us for the second of our Rim to Rim hikes\, this time on the south side of the park.\nWe will meet at the 100 Steps trailhead and hike along the yellow trail which offers great creek views. We’ll cross Wissahickon Creek and head toward Historic RittenhouseTown where we can explore the newly certified Arboretum (aided in part by FOW volunteers!). We will then cross Lincoln Drive and hike the ‘less-travelled’ trails before returning to our starting point.\nThe hike will be 5.5-6.5 miles with several stops to discuss points of interest. The terrain is hilly with rocks and roots. Steady rain cancels.\nDistance: 5.5-6.5 miles\nLevel: Difficult (many inclines and declines\, uneven surfaces)\nRegistration is required for all hikes so that participants can be informed of weather or other emergency cancellations. \nUnless otherwise specified\, Trail Ambassador Walks may be on rocky\, rugged trails that may be wet and slippery. Wear sturdy shoes or boots with socks. Walks are cancelled in heavy rain. Service animals are always welcome. For more information contact Marisa Miller at miller@fow.org. Visit www.fow.org for updates.\nRegister below!

SUMMARY:Trillium and Wine: Complementary Pairings
DESCRIPTION:Great wine and food pairings either emphasize the similarities or highlight the differences between the two. Dr. Raguso studies the floral scents of native plant species\, including trilliums\, a core collection at Mt. Cuba. Trilliums are noteworthy for not smelling like conventional flowers\, with fragrances that evoke wine\, cheese\, fruit\, and spices. He has assembled a “flight” of Mt. Cuba trilliums and several wines that complement their woodsy aroma. Explore the chemistry and ecological value of various trillium scents and take note of the pairings you like. (Ages 21 and over)\nThis program takes place in person at Mt. Cuba Center on Saturday\, April 26\, 2025.\nAbout the Instructor:\nRobert Raguso\, PhD\, is a professor of Chemical Ecology at Cornell University. His research interests run the spectrum of insect-plant interactions mediated by chemistry\, especially the role of fragrance in pollination ecology and animal behavior. He has promoted his research by organizing symposia\, short courses\, and workshops world-wide.

SUMMARY:Self Care Sundays

Join us on Sundays at 11:00 AM for some time dedicated to self-care and relaxation. This event will take place at Black Lotus HHC at 206 Rittenhousetown Lane\, where you can unwind and focus on yourself. \nTake part in yoga sessions\, meditation exercises\, and mindfulness activities to rejuvenate your mind and body. Treat yourself to healthy snacks and refreshments while connecting with like-minded individuals. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to prioritize your well-being and practice self-love. See you there! \n\n\n\n\nMore about Black Lotus HHC \n \nBlack Lotus Holistic Healing Collective is known for is a space designed for BIPOC healers/practitioners to be centered in the healing in order for them to heal those in the BIPOC community. Vibrational healing is the ancient art of healing with sound; it traces back to ancient Egypt & Tibet. Sound vibrations can heal the physical body at a cellular level by adjusting blockages and imbalances. These imbalances can cause the body to have a slower frequency vibration which may lead to dis-ease or illnesses. Natural healing sound frequencies can be transferred or introduced externally or directly into the body to create a more harmonious state. \nAt Black Lotus\, we combine the use of crystal chakra singing bowls\, gongs\, tuning forks\, and more to give a relaxing & transformative experience. We can balance chakras\, repair auras\, uplift the mood or help with grounding. Vibrational healing is a great tool for meditation\, alleviating stress\, and relaxing stiff or sore muscles. \nFor more visit: www.diasporaeducationalservices.org/black-lotus \nhttps://linktr.ee/blacklotushhc \n\n\n\nDIRECTIONS: \n \nBlack Lotus is not on Lincoln Drive despite the address…it is actually on Rittenhousetown Lane. From there\, we’ll head out on a hike where Troy will guide us as we look and listen for birds in both open fields and more forested areas. As we hike\, participants are encouraged (but definitely not required) to use the iNaturalist app to take pictures of plants and animals to add to Philadelphia’s City Nature Challenge totals. \nAfter the hike\, we’ll return to Ohio House where staff will be available to assist with uploading any observations to iNaturalist. We’ll also have a monitor setup so we can see in real time all of the observations made throughout the park and city. \nLooking for another City Nature Challenge event in Fairmount Park? Check out our friends at the Discovery Center’s City Nature Challenge event on April 26. \nINSTRUCTOR BIO: Troy Bynum\, owner of TB Wildlife Photography LLC\, is not only an enthusiastic birder but also a passionate wildlife photographer from Philadelphia\, PA. Troy’s work focuses on capturing and showcasing the remarkable colors\, intricate patterns\, and rich textures that are abundant throughout the natural world. In his work\, Troy draws attention to the oftentimes overlooked naturally occurring beauty found in the wild. Troy is on a mission to accentuate and celebrate the inherent magnificence of nature. \nTICKETS: Free**\, donations appreciated. Registration is required.\n**We are proud to be able to offer a free ticket option for this event. However\, there is limited capacity for all of our hikes.
