SUMMARY:Stonewall: The Riot That Built a Community
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an incredible evening with Mark Segal\, a trailblazer and advocate who has played a pivotal role in the LGBTQ+ community\n\n\nMark Segal was 18 years old on the night of June 28th\, 1969\, when he entered the Stonewall Inn. Raised by the only Jewish family in south Philadelphia’s Wilson Park housing project\, Segal was no stranger to being an outsider. He told his parents he was leaving Philly to go to school in New York. In truth\, he’d left to find a gay community. Watching an episode of The David Susskind Show years earlier he’d learned that gay people existed in New York and he knew then that was where he belonged. \nSegal would go on to organize some of the earliest American LGBT organizations\, help plan the first Pride March in 1970\, found the longest running LGBT weekly newspaper\, the Philadelphia Gay News\, and become one of the most important figures in the alternative gay press. But on that night at Stonewall he was still a teenager just exulting in the chance to drink and socialize with other LGBT people at a time when homosexuality was still treated as a psychological affliction by the medical establishment\, immoral by most religions\, and criminal under law. \nPenn State Great Valley encourages persons with disabilities to participate in its programs and activities. If you anticipate needing any type of accommodation or have questions about the physical access provided\, please contact Becky Stanko at rus1078@psu.edu or call 610-648-3236\, ideally 2 weeks prior to the program to allow sufficient time to effectively meet your access needs.

SUMMARY:Art and Connect with NextGen at Bok
DESCRIPTION:Studio Incamminati and Natural Lands’ NextGen Council invite you\, especially if you’re in your 20s\, 30s\, or 40s\, to an exciting exhibit of original art: Gregory Blue and the Landscapes of Stroud Preserve. This special evening celebration will mark the commencement of the dazzling exhibit\, which features 40+ works\, large and small\, inspired by Natural Lands’ Stroud Preserve and created by artist Gregory Blue over the last several years. \nStudio Incamminati\, which will host the exhibit\, has been at the forefront of the contemporary realist art movement for two decades. Founded by Nelson and Leona Shanks\, it is now recognized internationally for its rigorous curriculum\, accomplished instructors\, and diverse outreach efforts. \nStudio Incamminati makes its home in South Philadelphia’s Bok building\,  an old school turned workspace — full of makers\, businesses\, nonprofits\, and artists. Gregory’s work will be showcased from February 29 to May 3. \nNatural Lands’ Next Gen council raises awareness of Natural Lands throughout the region and promotes opportunities for people in their 20s\, 30s\, and 40s to get involved in our work. Join us for a meet and greet with the artist in a unique and fun venue. \nThe Bok Bar is bringing the cash bar to the Studio. If the weather cooperates\, enjoy your drink on the roof of the 7th floor overlooking the skyline of Philadelphia. There is no charge to attend. Bring a friend and enjoy an evening of art at the Bok. \nLove this painting? Attend the event\, finish the scavenger hunt\, and be entered into a raffle for your chance to win this print – a closed edition of 100 prints on German etching paper\, signed and dated by the artist. \n \nAbout the artist – Gregory Blue:  \nFor more than 40 years\, Gregory Blue’s landscape paintings have taken inspiration from the bucolic imagery and natural beauty of the region of Bucks and Chester County\, Pennsylvania. As the first major exhibition of Blue’s work in almost 20 years\, this show opens a fascinating view into the artist’s evolving process and approach. Blue’s world vision is saturated with color\, patterns\, and textures encountered at various times of day under changing light conditions. The resulting exploration is a symphony of highly controlled yet powerfully dramatic tableaux that resound with brilliantly colored\, evocatively illuminated rural scenes typical of southeastern Pennsylvania. \n\n\nGETTING TO STUDIO INCAMMINATI \n\n\n\n\nStudio Incamminati is located in Building Bok at 1901 S 9th Street\, 7th Floor\, and accessible by auto or public transit. We are wheelchair accessible. Here is a floor plan to help you find your way to the elevators. \n\nThe main visitor entrance is located at 821 Dudley Street – there’s a coffee shop and a breakfast/lunch place here if you arrive in the AM or early PM.\nOn-street parking is available (See parking map here). If possible\, we recommend using public transit or rideshare. If you are driving and can’t find a spot on the street there is a free municipal lot at 1628 E. Passyunk Ave. and a pay garage at 1485 McKean Street.\nClosest subway station: Tasker – Morris\, Broad Street Line\nNearby Septa bus routes: 45\, 47\, 47M\, 79\nBicycles: BOK is an Indego bike share location with a kiosk located on the corner of 8th and Mifflin Streets. We also have plenty of bike parking available next to the entrance on 9th Street.

SUMMARY:Watershed Wellness Walk at Blue Bell Hill with Margaret Kinnevy and Lisa Kleiman
DESCRIPTION:Meet at Blue Bell Hill Parking Lot\nIf you visited the Blue Bell Hill in March\, return with us in April to delight in the exuberance of spring. Evident in the woodlands will be the spring ephemeral flowers and vernal streams. Learn of the role they play in the ecosystem of the watershed.\nDuring our walk\, we will be guided into slowness\, stillness\, and quietude to better receive what is happening in the life around us and within.\nOur path will take us on trails of varied terrain\, connecting with nature through slow paced observation and sensory awareness intended to increase our appreciation of the environment and enhance our connection to nature.\nDuring the first hour of the walk\, we will explore deliberately\, covering only about 1 mile in distance. We will approach the area slowly and quietly\, tuning in to the environment with our senses; invitations and prompts will be offered to heighten our awareness of all the forest has to offer us.\nAfter we return to our starting point\, those interested can continue the experience with a more traditionally paced hike on different trails on the hill allowing for observation and appreciation of another landscape and adding another hour and about 1.5 – 2 miles of distance.\nWhile the distance and elevation experienced on this hike are not difficult\, it’s important to be prepared with footwear appropriate for roots\, rocks\, dirt and possibly mud. Dress in layers for the weather\, and bring along water and snacks for one or two hours in the woods.\n \nDistance: ~1.5- 2 miles\nLevel: Moderate (some inclines and declines\, uneven surfaces)\nRegistration is required for all hikes so that participants can be informed of weather or other emergency cancellations. \nUnless otherwise specified\, Trail Ambassador Walks may be on rocky\, rugged trails that may be wet and slippery. Wear sturdy shoes or boots with socks. Walks are cancelled in heavy rain or icy conditions. Service animals are always welcome. For more information contact Marisa Miller at miller@fow.org. Visit www.fow.org for updates.\nRegister Below!

SUMMARY:Classical Concert
DESCRIPTION:…with Organist Tim Evers and the Faith Wasson Flute Studio Ensemble. \nStoneleigh: a natural garden and Media Arts Council (MAC) are excited to partner for opening night of the MAC Classical Festival & Academy. \nResidence organs\, like Stoneleigh’s magnificent 1931 Aeolian-Skinner\, offered in-home entertainment for those who could afford them. This program will include repertoire that would have been played on this organ in the 1930’s\, as well as timeless favorites. Friday night’s featured performer and master class instructor is Tim Evers\, director of music at Westminster Presbyterian in West Chester. The student ensemble is made up of players from the Faith Wasson Flute Studio in Glenside. \nThis three-day festival brings together professional musicians and selected high school ensembles from around Pennsylvania for a master class during the day and a joint performance in the evening. This event gives students a chance to learn and grow from experienced professionals while performing in a setting outside of their schools and allows audiences to gather a deeper understanding of music in a relaxed and open atmosphere. \nClick here for more information and tickets. \n

SUMMARY:Native Plants of Spring Hybrid
DESCRIPTION:Our highly popular Native Plants Series is available in a new course format. View the prerecorded lectures at your own pace prior to joining Mt. Cuba staff for scheduled onsite garden tours. Please note – attendance to garden tours and exam are required if you are working towards the Ecological Gardening Certificate. As Earth awakens from its winter slumber\, experience the colors\, fragrances\, and rapid progression of spring-flowering native plants. Through lectures and outdoor labs\, learn to identify 60 beautiful and ecologically valuable trees\, shrubs\, and herbaceous perennials. Examine the identifying characteristics of each plant and its preferred growing conditions\, overall size\, and environmental significance. With this knowledge\, make informed plant selections for your spring garden.\nThis program takes place online with separate in-person tours of Mt. Cuba Center’s gardens. Six prerecorded online lectures will be available starting Monday April 1. Three garden tours Saturdays take place April 13\, 27\, May 11.\nOptional Exam: Saturday May 18.\nAbout the Instructors:\nLiz Allen is an Educator at Mt. Cuba Center and a Delaware Master Naturalist with the University of Delaware. She provides gardening consultations to local homeowners and schools who are looking to diversify and improve their landscape value with native plants. Liz is also the grounds manager for a school\, and has converted the entire property to native plants for children to study and enjoy. She also leads groups in invasive removal efforts\, as well as creating public plantings. Liz is passionate about restoring nature’s balance by actively influencing plant communities.\nJay Kratz is a Mt Cuba Center educator. Before coming to Mt Cuba\, he spent twenty years as a college instructor\, and working with his wife at her family business\, Hill House Herb Gardens in Providence\, RI. In addition to being the luckiest boy in the world to spend his days with guests marveling at Mt Cuba’s gardens\, he shares his enthusiasm for native plants outside Mt Cuba’s gates as the co-horticulturist and Rancocas chapter leader for the Native Plant Society of NJ\, and as a native plant garden designer and landscaper.
