SUMMARY:WORLD PREMIERE: Sister of Mine by Kate McGunagle
DESCRIPTION:The Strides Collective Presents: \nA World Premiere production of Sister of Mine by Kate McGunagle \nDirected by Jonathan V. Edmondson\nAssistant Directed by Caitlin Alvarez\nHonorary Producer: Lauren Hughes \nFeaturing:\nA – Eliza Waterman\nZ – MJ Santry \nWednesday\, October 25 – Sunday\, October 29\, 2023\, at the Community Education Center (3500 Lancaster Ave\, Philadelphia\, PA 19104). Sister of Mine runs approximately 90 minutes with no intermission. \nAbout the Play: A and Z\, former childhood friends recovering from compulsory heterosexuality\, imagine a series of encounters in which they unexpectedly reunite after substantial time apart\, exposing longings\, secrets\, and betrayals. A love letter to the intricacy of first queer friendship\, Sister of Mine is a meditation on the queer experience of searching for an identity within a world that both imposes and resists categorization. \nAbout the Playwright: A queer writer and artist from rural Montana\, Kate is deeply interested in stories that wrestle with the seemingly impossible – those that examine queer bodies\, experience\, and pleasure\, interrogate rape culture and gendered violence\, and revel in the spaces between social categories and within ordinary life. Her first play M\, developed through the Tennessee Playwrights Studio fellowship program in 2022\, examines what it is to document a queer woman’s life and longings\, on the page and on the screen. Sister of Mine will be her first formally produced piece. \nKate holds a B.A. in English from Princeton University and M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Boston University\, and her short fiction and personal essays have appeared or are forthcoming in The Whitefish Review\, Five Points\, Passages North\, and The North American Review; her essay “Passive Voice\,” which examines the language of rape\, was the recipient of the 2021 Terry Tempest Williams Prize in Creative Nonfiction and named a Notable Essay in the Best American Essays 2022. She is an active collaborator within The Pipeline Collective\, which first led her to playwriting\, and author behind the playful Substack Bardette\, which examines daily queer encounters. \nAbout The Strides Collective: Founded in 2020\, The Strides Collective is a nonprofit queer theatre company in Philadelphia that produces and develops theatrical work by emerging playwrights that embraces the queer experience through authentic\, modern\, and innovative storytelling. The Germantown Arts District\, in partnership with St. Luke’s Episcopal Church of Germantown\, will be hosting the GAD October Fourth Friday Autumn Nights on October 27\, 2023\, from 6:00 PM – 10:00 PM on the 5400 Block of Germantown Avenue (From 5421 Germantown Ave to 5427 Germantown Ave). \nIn the heart of the season\, there is magic in creating a community-driven\, family-friendly\, Halloween-themed event like the GAD October Fourth Friday Autumn Night. Beyond the candy and costumes\, the event will provide a safe space where neighbors\, friends\, and families can converge and enjoy the night. The event will also feature local vendors and artists who will be able to sell and showcase their work to the public. The GAD October Fourth Friday Autumn Night event will be frighteningly good\, from trick or treating to costume contests\, tasty food\, and family activities.

The name says it all — it’s the neighborhood beside West Fairmount Park. Similarly to Strawberry Mansion on the other side of the Schuylkill\, Parkside is where the city grid meets the greenspace\, buffered by a boulevard of grand homes facing the park. Much of the Parkside neighborhood was built during the 1876 Centennial Exhibition. Originally populated by German-Americans and Jewish immigrants of Russian descent\, after World War II\, the Great Migration coupled with ‘white flight’ transformed Parkside into a predominantly African-American neighborhood\, which it remains to this day. In 1983\, community organizers had the neighborhood listed on the National Register of Historic Places because of its cultural legacy and many fine examples of Victorian architecture. \nTour highlights include: \n\nCentennial Exposition model in Please Touch Museum\nSmith Memorial Arch\nParkside Apartments. (when built it was one of the tallest apartment buildings in the city)\nChrist Community Baptist Church (built from an Old synagogue)\nLansdowne Apartment Building built in 1897\nCentennial Commons\nPhiladelphia Stars Negro League Memorial Park and mural\n\n\nEstimated distance: about 2.5 miles\nLevel: easy to moderate\nTerrain: mainly flat sidewalks/trails\n \n\nTICKET PRICES: Pay what you can – $15\, $20\, or $25\n[ Not sure what to pay? Please refer to this Sliding Scale Pricing FAQ for additional info. ]\n\nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO: \n\nThe tour covers about 2.5 miles on foot. Not all areas will be ADA-accessible.\nAppropriate for adults and families with children ages 12 and up. Minors must be registered and accompanied by an adult.\nPlease wear comfortable shoes.\nPlease dress for weather conditions.\nBring your own water and snack (drinking water is not available in the park).\nThere are porta-potties available along the tour route.\nDogs on leashes are welcome; however\, you will not be able to enter the Please Touch Museum.\n\n\nPARKING/GETTING THERE: There is plenty of free parking available in the School of the Future parking lot closer to Girard Ave. As always\, never leave valuables in your car! If you are traveling by public transit\, the nearest station is at Parkside Ave and 40th Street. The nearest Indego bike station is roughly 1/2 mile away at the Philadelphia Zoo (1046 North 34th Street). \n\nQUESTIONS? Please reach out to programs@myphillypark.org

SUMMARY:Hidden Geology Biking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Our once-a-season\, bicycle-based field trip exploring Philadelphia’s 500 million years of geologic history!\n\n\nHidden Geology Bike Tour \nMeet in the garden of the American Philosophical Society\, southeast corner of 5th and Chestnut across the street from the Monaco Hotel \nIt’s back! Our once-a-season\, bicycle-based field trip exploring Philadelphia’s 500 million years of geologic history\, which is all around us yet rarely seen. We’ll start in Old City near Independence Hall\, ride to the beautiful and scenic banks of the Schuylkill River\, and then on to Manayunk where we will have a tasty snack before returning to Center City. We’ll stop at a number of locations along the way\, where guide Ray Scheinfeld will talk about the complex geology of this area as well as the surface water drainage and cultural features that shaped over 300 years of development. These geologic features presented numerous engineering design\, environmental\, and construction challenges during Philadelphia’s history and development. \nThe trip will proceed at a pace of 9-12 miles per hour with frequent stops. The tour will cover a round trip distance of approximately 18 miles and there will be several opportunities to shorten the trip if desired. The terrain is generally level with a few small (<30 feet) gradual elevation changes. The entire trip is on paved streets and bicycle paths. \nHelmets are required for the trip (bring your own). No bicycle repair support will be provided during the trip. \n A refreshing snack will be provided to participants on the return leg of the trip. \nTrip is limited to 20 participants. Minimum age is 16 years old. \nRain date: Sunday\, October 29th\, 11:00am. \nHidden City Members\, don’t forget to use your promo codes for discounts on tickets! \nQuestions\, concerns\, conundrums? Contact Hidden City project coordinator Alyssa Shea at ashea@hiddencityphila.org.
