SUMMARY:More Than Murals w/ Dominique Smack: Artist Appreciation Month
DESCRIPTION:Our dynamic monthly speaking series returns for happy hour\, candid conversation\, and a panel discussion at W Philadelphia.\n\n\nMural Arts’ Dominique Smack will host a panel of local emerging artists who have grown their practice through community collaboration and fellowship opportunities\, including the Philadelphia Fellowship for Black Artists. \nStay tuned for more panelist details. \nAbout Mural Than Murals\nMore Than Murals w/ Dominique Smack is a dynamic monthly speaking series presented by Mural Arts Philadelphia that brings the organization’s broader mission to life—demonstrating that Mural Arts is not only about public art\, but also about social justice\, restorative justice\, art education\, workforce development\, and deep community impact throughout Philadelphia. Through candid conversations with community leaders\, cultural changemakers\, program participants\, and local partners\, the series spotlights individuals whose lives and neighborhoods have been shaped by Mural Arts while reinforcing the importance of sustained investment in the organization’s transformative work. \nThe series is hosted on the 7th floor of W Philadelphia\, reimagining Philadelphia’s iconic First Fridays tradition through a vibrant blend of thought leadership\, culture\, and hospitality. Set across the hotel’s elevated social spaces\, each event will feature curated conversations hosted by Dominique Smack\, alongside happy hour\, live DJs\, artist showcases\, and creative networking opportunities. SUMMARY:Future/Past/Present - July Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate Future/Past/Present at InLiquid Gallery!\n@ InLiquid Gallery\, 1400 N American St\, Philadelphia PA\, 19122\nReception: July 9th\, 6p – 9p \nFeaturing artists: Randall Cleaver\, Billy Colbert\, Carolyn Harper\, Candace Karch\, James Labold\, Carole Loeffler\, Benjamin B. Olshin \nThis multi-media exhibition features seven InLiquid Artist Members making work about the United States’ past\, present\, and future. Using photos\, sculpture\, painting\, and other mediums\, these artists bring various cultural phenomena to coexist on a single plane. Through this exhibition\, we’re reminded that the American political landscape is intersectional and extends beyond our immediate line of sight\, our present. As we celebrate the United States’ 250th Anniversary\, we take this time to reflect on how we’ve evolved as a nation and who we might dream of becoming. \nEach artist examines the American political landscape through a different lens. As viewers move through the gallery\, they are placed in different states of time\, both factual and imagined. Portraits throughout the gallery depict individuals whose future has been stolen\, whose past has been forgotten\, and whose history is remembered—three very different outcomes of existence. Portraiture is employed as a means of preserving an identity and reshaping the historical footprint of the subjects they honor. \nSculptures throughout the space draw caricatures of political figures\, creating tongue-in-cheek compositions critiquing the lawmakers and the state legislature in the US. Mockery has been a long-standing tool of opposition to identify the downfalls of political figures\, typically seen in newspaper cartoons; these narratives shape the perceived effectiveness of government officials. \nBut what if the past looked different? Artifacts from alternate timelines\, items that could not possibly exist in our reality\, highlight the obvious: our actions will impact our future. As for the timeline we exist in\, there are moments in history that simply can’t be overlooked. The collection of work in the back of the gallery puts viewers face-to-face with the not often-seen lives of Black Americans from the 1800s to the 1950s. As we imagine how our future might be shaped\, we must remember what shaped our present.

SUMMARY:First Friday August 7th @ Arch Enemy Arts
DESCRIPTION:August is STACKED at Arch Enemy Arts. Nine new shows—seven solos and two new group shows\, INSEPARABLE and THE ORNITHOLOGIST’S CABINET—are adorning our walls with all the beautiful absurdity you’ve come to know and love. Check out the details below\, and join us on your First Friday crawl\, 5PM – 9PM at 109 Arch Street\, Old City Philadelphia. \nBeatriz Bradaschii – ODE TO FEELING is a collection of eight surreal oil paintings and two drawings that honor emotion as a source of intuition\, self-knowledge\, and transformation in glowing\, earthy palettes. \nCalamity Cole – GODS & PROPHETS is a collection of twelve mixed-media watercolor paintings that unfold like strange parables and holy hallucinations\, reimagined through the visual language of Byzantine icons and illuminated manuscripts. \nEgo – OTHER is a collection of six meticulously rendered paintings steeped in Ego’s signature hypnotic\, post-apocalyptic atmosphere. Each intimate portrait centers an otherworldly outsider refusing to mask what they are\, \nGerlanda di Francia – BEAST AND BEING is a collection of eight acrylic paintings exploring a surreal symbiosis between the human body and the natural world. Rendered in Gerlanda di Francia’s delicate crosshatched linework\, these strange metamorphoses dissolve the boundaries between person\, animal\, and ecosystem \nJB Burke – STEP RIGHT UP is a series of hypperreal colored pencil drawings set in the artist’s candy-colored world\, inspired by circus and carnival culture from the late 19th to early 20th centuries. \nMarek Osedowski – THE WHEEL OF THE YEAR is a collection of eight mixed-media paintings\, each named for a seasonal sabbat celebrated in Celtic\, Wiccan\, and Neo-Pagan traditions. Elegant and enigmatic\, the series blends occult symbolism\, Alberta’s shifting seasons\, and the theatrical romanticism of high fashion \nWiley Wallace – NIGHT BLOOM is a collection of intimae paintings that combine surreal metaphysical narratives and childlike wonder rendered in the artist’s incredible realism and psychedelic palette.
