SUMMARY:Death & Life at Mt. Moriah Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:Mount Moriah is the largest cemetery in Pennsylvania\, and home to some of our city’s finest grave architecture.\n\n\nMount Moriah is the largest cemetery in Pennsylvania\, and home to some of our city’s finest grave architecture. Trees and vines have engulfed the gravestones in some areas\, giving the place the atmosphere of a lost city in the jungle. Almost every style of tomb can be found here\, from Egyptian Revival to Art Nouveau. Guests will learn about the role of cemeteries as a place for leisure in the Victorian era\, as well as the influence of the Freemasons. Part wilderness and part sculpture-garden\, this city of the dead is by turns eerie and poignant. Join Hidden City as we peel back the canopy and reveal the wonders below. \n \nIMPORTANT DETAILS \nWe’ll meet at the main gate\, where Kingsessing dead-ends at 62nd Street.***If you’re using Google Maps type in 6191 Kingsessing Avenue*** \nThis tour requires significant walking\, so practical shoes and water are a must. There are plenty of ticks\, especially as the weather warms\, so we recommend long pants\, socks\, and most of all a careful check of oneself after the tour is over. \nTour guide John Vidumsky has been exploring abandoned spaces for as long as he can remember. He has an MA in history from Temple University\, where he studied 20th-century Russian history. John was Hidden City’s first intern! \nHidden City Members\, remember to use your promo codes for discounts! \nQuestions\, concerns\, conundrums? Contact Hidden City project coordinator Alyssa Shea at ashea@hiddencityphila.org.

SUMMARY:Olney Youth Arts Festival (+ A Taste of Olney)
DESCRIPTION:A multicultural celebration of youth creativity in dance and movement that highlights different cultural expressions all on one stage!\n\n\nAfter a momentous return from a four year hiatus last fall\, Olney Culture Lab of CultureTrust Greater Philadelphia is excited to announce the Olney Youth Arts Festival will be back again in 2024! This multicultural celebration of youth creativity continues to focus on dance and movement by our young people. The event is designed to highlight different ethnic expressions towards cross-cultural awareness and to showcase the strength of various arts programs serving the children and youth in Philadelphia’s neighborhoods. \nThe vast array of dance featured will include: breaking\, hip hop\, salsa\, tap\, ballet\, modern\, ethnic folk dances\, among others. \nAnd who can forget the debut of A Taste of Olney in tandem with the festival last year! We plan on having an equally vibrant representation of foods both savory and sweet from restaurants and caterers from the neighborhood all throughout the day\, culminating with a dinner around 4 PM. \nLastly\, there will also be a resource fair at the event sharing valuable information for the community. \nMain support for this event is made possible through a generosity of the William Penn Foundation. Additional support includes Collins Shop Rite\, Forman Arts Initiative\, Philadelphia250\, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts\, and Olney Community Collaborative\, with more forthcoming. \nWith almost 800 people in attendance last year\, event sponsorship inquiries can be made to olneyculturelab@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:November First Saturday: Bounce\, Bend or Break: the Science of Flexibility
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we explore the science of flexibility and explore the Wagner’s collections.\n\n\nNOVEMBER’S FIRST SATURDAY OPEN HOUSE\nBounce\, Bend or Break: the Science of Flexibility\n \nFlexibility is a kind of strength! A tree bends in the hurricane but does not break. A snake slithers through a branch and does not fall. A crab scuttles to safety under a rock. Learn how we can harness bendy ideas from nature. Join the Wagner Free Institute of Science\, in partnership with Thomas Jefferson University Chemistry Professor\, Dr. Thomas Twardowski\, for an afternoon exploring the ways flexibility occurs in nature. Investigate the Interesting Ball\, learn about properties of putties\, and make your own glow-in-the-dark slime to take home\, all while enjoying the Wagner’s natural history museum\, historic building and teaching garden. \nAs always\, The Exhibit Hall will be open for self-guided exploration of the natural history collection throughout the day. Explore our 100\,000 natural history specimens\, including ancient fossils\, glowing minerals and animals from around the globe. Wander at your own pace or follow the path of one of our themed scavenger hunts. You can also pick up pencils and paper to draw from the specimens on display. \nThis event is offered in conjunction with STEM Equity Week. Organized by the Philadelphia STEM Equity Collective (PSEC)\, this groundbreaking initiative aims to unite educators\, students\, professionals\, community leaders\, and families in both addressing systemic barriers and promoting equitable access to STEM fields and showcasing the vibrant STEM programs Philadelphia has to offer. Today\, the Wagner offers more programs to more people than ever before! Your support helps us provide free education\, not only through the museum\, but through a wide range of courses\, lectures\, field trips\, and children’s science programs. SUMMARY:Adopt-a-Tree Tree Planting Event
DESCRIPTION:Join us with your family to adopt and plant trees at Riverbend. \nFall is a wonderful time to plant trees just before it turns colder in the winter months. Planting trees at the preserve helps to provide habitat to local wildlife\, combat climate change and helps to maintain our local water supply as the trees we plant keep runoff from heading to the Schuylkill River watershed. \nRegistration is required as spaces are limited. This event is open to all ages. Please bring your own water and work gloves to the event. \nThis is a Riverbend PAY WHAT YOU WISH Event: \nThe true cost to Riverbend to offer this educational event to the public is $35 per family. We recognize that for some families\, this is unaffordable. Therefore\, we invite you to choose the price you wish to pay for this event. In doing so\, you help make environmental education accessible to ALL children\, regardless of their family’s financial situation.

SUMMARY:Five Trails\, One Hike: The Original Redux\, with Debra Brackett\, Jean McWilliams\, and Sue Amon
DESCRIPTION:Photo courtesy of Marian Racette\nMeet at the Courtesy Stables Trailhead Kiosk\nInspired by the 2023 All Trails Challenge\, we created an “abridged” all-trails loop walk that includes five major trails in the Wissahickon. This route became the first of a Five Trails\, One Hike series. It was a great hike in Spring of 2024 and we’re excited to revisit it this fall. We’ll start and finish at the kiosk at Courtesy Stables on Cathedral Road\, and enjoy the variety of vistas from both sides of the creek. Along the way\, we’ll observe points of natural and historic interest\, as well as ongoing water management projects. This rigorous route includes some steep and rocky ascents and descents and is about 4-4.5 miles long. Children 12 years of age and older are welcome when accompanied by an adult; no dogs except for service animals\, please.\nDistance: 4.5 miles\nLevel: Difficult (many inclines and declines\, uneven surfaces)\nRegistration is required for all hikes so that participants can be informed of weather or other emergency cancellations. \nUnless otherwise specified\, Trail Ambassador Walks may be on rocky\, rugged trails that may be wet and slippery. Wear sturdy shoes or boots with socks. Walks are cancelled in heavy rain. Service animals are always welcome. For more information contact Marisa Miller at miller@fow.org. When industry moved downtown\, the area was preserved to protect the water supply for the region\, producing an environment that became world renowned for its beauty and inspired the works of Walt Whitman\, John Greenleaf Whittier\, Edgar Allen Poe\, Christopher Morley\, and Currier and Ives. Forbidden Drive is so named for its prohibition of all motor vehicles. The Wissahickon Valley has a stillness untouched by time\, strange for one of the world’s larger cities\, and is surely Philadelphia’s best kept secret\, offering as appealing a walking route as is available for a hundred miles around. \n“The Wissahickon is of so remarkable a loveliness that\, were it flowing in England\, it would be the theme of every bard.” — Poe \n \n“Some of my happiest hours have been spent there\, some of my freest hours.” — Whitman \nOur journey begins at 30th Street Station\, with convenient connections to Septa\, NJ Transit\, Amtrak and Megabus. The walk ends in the tony main-street neighborhood of Chestnut Hill\, where we shall meet for eats and libations\, with two train stations available to carry us back to 30th Street. Easy gravel and paved terrain\, with very few road crossings after one leaves Center City. Two snack bars with nearby bathrooms assist along the way. \n \nThe half-marathon route is a shortest-distance trek along the Schuylkill and Wissahickon. The full route provides a broad and meandering treatment of all of the many highlights of sprawling Fairmount Park\, along with visits to the places of debate and worship of our founding fathers\, the site of the 1876 Centennial Exposition\, the world’s tallest masonry building\, dozens of works of public art\, and the nation’s most pioneering and pedestrian-friendly cemetery\, replete with graves of countless war heroes\, inventors\, tycoons and even local icons like Harry Kalas and Rocky’s Adrian Balboa. \nVisit FreeWalkers.org for more walks like this!\n \nMap of walking route\nMARATHON WALK Highlights\n\nUniversity of Pennsylvania\nSchuylkill Banks Boardwalk\nRittenhouse Square\nWashington Square\nIndependence Hall\nCarpenters Hall\nSpruce Street Harbor Park\nPenns Landing\nChrist Church\nCity Hall\nLogan Circle\nBen Franklin Parkway\nArt Museum steps\nFairmount Waterworks\nBoathouse Row\nKelly Drive\nMemorial Hall\nJapanese House and Garden\nBelmont Plateau\nStrawberry Mansion Bridge\nLaurel Hill Cemetery\nFalls Bridge\nWissahickon Creek\nBattle of Germantown\nForbidden Drive\nValley Green Inn\nMagarge Dam\nCovered bridge\nChestnut Hill\n\nHALF-MARATHON Highlights\n\nFairmount Waterworks\nBoathouse Row\nKelly Drive\nFalls Bridge\nWissahickon Creek\nBattle of Germantown\nForbidden Drive\nValley Green Inn\nMagarge Dam\nCovered bridge\nChestnut Hill\n\nVisit freewalkers.org for ongoing event info: http://freewalkers.org/events \n \nPartners:The East Coast Greenway Alliance is a non-profit organization developing a public multi-use 3\,000 mile trail from Canada to Key West through New Jersey and New York. SUMMARY:November Featured Collections Opening Reception at Paradigm Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for First Friday to celebrate new releases from over 8 artists and view/collect on all gallery floors.\n\n\nParadigm Gallery + Studio is pleased to present three distinct collections championing craft and reinvention for CraftNOW 2024. Artists Ulla-Stina Wikander\, Yoonmi Nam\, and Andrew Jeffrey Wright have spent many years honing in on their respective crafts that incorporate the use and repetition of found materials. In a time where new objects are constantly produced with diminishing relevance and single-use purpose\, we uplift unique methods of upcycling in art that recontextualizes material to expand on larger ideas of craftsmanship\, methods of production\, and the functionality of objects. Each artist creates artwork through layering of old and new construction\, bringing new life to past pieces and not letting matter go to waste. Featured Collections: Ulla-Stina Wikander\, Yoonmi Nam\, & Andrew Jeffrey Wright will be on view on the first floor of the Paradigm Arts Building (12 N 3rd St) from November through December 1\, 2024\, with a public opening reception on Friday\, November 1 from 6:00-8:00 pm. \nPlease join us for the first in-person look at our newest collections: \nUlla-Stina Wikander: Communication \nYoonmi Nam: Generally Meant to Be Discarded \nAndrew Jeffrey Wright: Super Rare series \nRead the press release here: \nhttps://www.paradigmarts.org/blogs/news/featured-collections-ulla-stina-wikander-yoonmi-nam-and-andrew-jeffrey-wright \nAlso on display for First Friday: \nShawn Theodore: A Race of Angels \nRead the press release here: \nhttps://www.paradigmarts.org/blogs/news/shawn-theodore-a-race-of-angels \nKyle Montgomery: Crystal Mary series \nNazeer Sabree: TRF-98 series \nAndré Schulze: Pixelated Paintings \n+ \na variety of curated books and limited edition prints ready to be taken home and gifted for the holiday season. \n \nAll artwork will be available for purchase.
