Participants will have the opportunity to carve queer botanicals on linoleum and print them on cloth napkins. Additionally\, participants will be invited to print on the table cloths and cloth napkins that will be used for the dinner ritual. \nOpen to all levels of experience. Open to queer and trans folks\, and allies. \n \nVenue Accessibility\nThe session will take place on the first floor of Fleisher Art Memorial\, an ADA accessible space. There are five steps to enter the building\, which is wheelchair accessible through use of a stair lift. The session will take place in the Sanctuary\, approximately 45 feet away from the main entrance and down 2-3 steps into and across the gallery space. A wheelchair ramp is also available to access the Sanctuary. There are gender neutral restrooms in the lobby near the main entrance. Fleisher offers free parking in the lot across the street\, and includes designated accessible parking spaces. The sidewalk surface varies and there is a curb cut at the corner of 7th and Catharine.

SUMMARY:After After After: Poetry Talk and Workshop with Sara Mae
DESCRIPTION:Poet Sara Mae will elucidate their writing process for their new chapbook\, Phantasmagossip. Sara Mae will lead participants in a discussion of the poems that inspire them to write and share from their own work. Centered primarily around visual poetry\, this is a workshop appropriate for writers of all levels. Bring a notebook and invite a friend! Light refreshments offered by the writer! \nRegistration on Eventbrite is required. There are two ticketing tiers\, one tier pay-what-you-can and one tier that includes a copy of Phantasmagossip. Copies of Phantasmagossip will be for sale at H&H Books\, too. (Note: This event will be held in H&H Books’ basement workshop\, which has stairs and is not ADA-accessible.) \nAbout the author: Sara Mae is a genderqueer writer raised on the Chesapeake Bay. They are a 2023 Big Ears Music Festival Artist Scholar\, a 2022 Tinhouse Summer Workshops Attendee\, a 2022 Open Mouth Attendee\, and a 2021 Sewanee Writer’s Conference Scholar. Their work appears in or is forthcoming from the Georgia Review\, POETRY\, The Offing\, and elsewhere. Their first chapbook\, Priestess of Tankinis\, is out via Game Over Books. Their second chapbook\, Phantasmagossip\, won the Vinyl45 chapbook competition and is forthcoming from YesYes Books in 2025. They write shimmery rock music as The Noisy. They received their MFA from UT Knoxville\, and currently live in Philly. You can find them on Instagram @veryverynoisy. \nAbout the book: Phantasmagossip by Sara Mae is a packed funeral. The poems mourn shouting over one another to tell a story\, squeezing hands of strangers and loved ones\, picking at the many homemade mac n cheeses. The game of the Exquisite Corpse\, usually played by many\, is used here as a way into polyvocality\, intimacy\, and remembrance. Here\, the poems infuse formal tradition with discomfort\, adapt the shapes of literary and queer ancestors\, speculate fleeting worlds of gender as the speaker sees theirs through and alongside best friends. Phantasmagossip does not romanticize death\, but instead grapples with the stakes of gendered violence and the simultaneous desire for pleasure\, dissecting accusations of dangerousness levied against women\, fems\, genderqueer speakers. The speakers seek acceptance of their own queer desires\, alongside the grief that being looked at and desired is not always the same as being seen.

SUMMARY:Philly Dreamin' & Becoming
DESCRIPTION:Solo Show of Artist and Educator Dominique Samarco. \nDreams are powerful—they shape our aspirations\, offer direction\, and serve as blueprints for a better future. To build the life we envision\, we must first dare to dream. As educators\, it is our responsibility to nurture and inspire students to transform their dreams into reality. Art educators\, in particular\, play a vital role in helping students manifest their visions\, as dreams are the foundation of success. \nDreaming has been central to my journey. Vivid\, colorful images of my future have always guided me\, a perspective reflected in my artwork. Growing up in Philadelphia—the poorest major city in America—dreams often serve as a beacon of hope\, a means of escaping hardship and achieving stability. My paintings are a visual narrative of my past\, present\, and future—interwoven with my hopes\, challenges\, and growth. \nThis body of work retraces my personal journey and connection to my community through the lens of equity and currere\, an educational method that explores experience in four stages: regressive\, progressive\, analytical\, and synthetic. By revisiting my past and envisioning my future\, I have examined how these timelines intersect to shape my present. My paintings depict meaningful places in Philadelphia\, bridging personal history with the collective experience of my community. Through this work\, I aim to highlight the importance of representation in fine art—how seeing one’s home and experiences reflected in art can foster a sense of belonging\, particularly for those who have historically lacked access to artistic spaces. \nAs both an artist and educator\, I draw from my experiences growing up in a working-class family in Philadelphia. I am the first in my family to pursue higher education\, a journey shaped by resilience and determination. My work reflects not only my own dreams but also my commitment to educational equity and city-based youth. \nPhiladelphia’s deep financial disparities underscore the need for opportunity\, access\, and visibility. These paintings are my visual “Why”—a fusion of dreamlike optimism and gritty realism that embodies my life’s journey and the realities of the students I serve. Together\, we navigate our pasts\, presents\, and futures\, mirroring the broader human experience. \nThis series is a tribute—to my community\, my aspirations\, and the enduring power of dreams. \nPhilly Dreamin’ & Becoming will be on view in Gallery 1 from May 1 – May 25\, 2025 with an opening reception on Sunday\, April 4th from 4-7pm.

SUMMARY:Grid Presents: The People Left Behind
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Public Trust for The People Left Behind\, a conversation on Tuesday\, May 6\, 2025 from 7-8:30pm about the long-term effects of gun violence on local communities beyond the crime scene. The launch event for a new Grid magazine podcast\, the program will be hosted by Afea Tucker and features panelists Vivek Ashok\, Ellie Rushing\, Julien Suaudeau\, and others. Presented in partnership with Grid. \nAbout the Program\nWhy does gun violence reporting in local and national media typically center on the crime scene and the judicial process? How can we break the never-ending loop of the news cycle\, from one shooting to the next? How can we remove the stigma of victimhood and involve local actors (loved ones\, neighbors\, neighborhood associations) in the streamlining of gun violence coverage? Can news outlets shift from emergency reporting about shootings to long form journalism about their personal implications? What kind of storytelling and journalistic standards should we advocate to maximize the agency of survivors and co-victims? What needs to be done to mitigate the risks of exploitation and retraumatization? To what extent is sharing one’s story with the world part of a healing process? \nAbout the Speakers\nDr. Vivek Ashok is an Associate of the Center for Violence Prevention at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia\, and a fellow in the National Clinician Scholars Program at Penn Medicine. His research focuses on the language surrounding firearm related violence\, and disentangling firearm violence from mental illness. \nEllie Rushing is the Justice and Injustice Reporter at the The Philadelphia Inquirer. She covers criminal justice and law enforcement in Philadelphia\, including how crime and the court systems impact communities. \nJulien Suaudeau is a writer and filmmaker. He hosts two Philadelphia-centric podcasts: Song of Philadelphia and The People Left Behind. He teaches French and Film at Bryn Mawr College\, where he is the director of the Film Studies program. \nAfea Tucker is The Trace’s Philadelphia Community Engagement Reporter. She oversees Up the Block\, a resource and information hub for Philadelphians affected by gun violence. A veteran media professional and journalist\, her work has been published in The Philadelphia Tribune\, WHYY\, and The Philadelphia Inquirer. \nTerrez McCleary founded Moms Bonded By Grief. In November 2024\, the organization opened the Moms Bonded By Grief Botanical Garden of Healing\, a space built by mothers of homicide victims to honor Philadelphians lost to gun violence. The memorial garden sits at the corner of 51st Street and Woodland Avenue. \nMichelle Kerr-Spry is a Trauma-Informed Specialist and Behavioral Health Generalist\, as well as the Director of Programs and Development for Mothers In Charge (MIC). She joined MIC in 2006\, shortly after the murders of her only brother\, James\, and then oldest son\, Blain\, and has worked there in various capacities for the last 19 years.
