SUMMARY:Earth Day Bells Mill Road Clean-Up
DESCRIPTION:Meeting at Bells Mill Road and Forbidden Drive\nOur meeting location is about a .5-mile hike from both primary parking locations\, as Bells Mill Road will be closed from Lykens Lane to Germantown Ave starting around 7:00 am. Regardless of where you park\, be sure to refrain from leaving any valuables in your car.\nPlease note that there will only be porta potty access during the service day.\nEven though every day is Earth Day for us as FOW\, we always love to do something extra special for the Wissahickon around April 22nd. This year\, we’ll be showing some extra love to one of the main roads through our park with a litter clean-up! Come out to help us make our little corner of the world cleaner\, healthier\, and more beautiful.\nAll are welcome to attend\, and no experience is needed. We encourage attendees to work within their own comfort level\, and we always strive to accommodate needs on an individual basis. With that being said\, this service day may include the following activities:\n• Litter clean-up: carrying trash bags up to 20 lbs\n• Hiking up to 1 mile (we’ll be traveling up and down Bell’s Mill Road picking up trash)\n• Repetitive motions\nWe provide gloves\, tools\, and instruction—you just need to show up! SUMMARY:Earth Day Stewardship Saturday Volunteer Opportunity
DESCRIPTION:Join us with your family to help the Riverbend Preserve blossom!\n\n\nVolunteers are invited to help ready the preserve for the spring and summer seasons. This event is free and open to all. \nSpring is a wonderful time to plant trees and work on the preserve just before the warmth of summer! Planting trees and tending gardens at the preserve helps to combat climate change and helps to maintain our local water supply as the trees we plant keep runoff from heading to the Schuylkill River watershed. \nRegistration is required as spaces are limited. Please bring your own water and work gloves to the event. \nThis is a Riverbend PAY WHAT YOU WISH Event: \nThe true cost to Riverbend to offer this educational event to the public is $35 per family. We recognize that for some families\, this is unaffordable. Therefore\, we invite you to choose the price you wish to pay for this event. In doing so\, you help make environmental education accessible to ALL children\, regardless of their family’s financial situation.

SUMMARY:Campus Architecture & History Tour for Int'l Day of Monuments and Sites
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate IDMS with a guided history and architectural tour behind the 10-foot wall of Girard College .\n\n\nDid you know Philadelphia is home to 67 of the country’s 2\,618 National Historic Landmarks? On the weekend of April 19\, many of Philadelphia’s landmarks will offer special events as part of an annual celebration of the International Day of Monuments and Sites (IDMS) organized by the Global Philadelphia Association. \nWe will be celebrating IDMS with a guided walking tour behind the famous 10-foot wall of Girard College with Director of Historical Resources Kathy Haas. As we stroll around this 43-acre oasis in the middle of the city\, we’ll examine the campus as it exists today\, along with archival drawings and photographs that document its design\, history\, and growth. \nWe’ll look at the monumental architecture of Founder’s Hall\, a National Historic Landmark\, as well as other sites on our campus\, all of which is on the National Register. We will also touch on Stephen Girard\, the 19th-century multi-millionaire who left his fortune to create a school for financially-disadvantaged children; the generations of students who have lived and learned here (and still do); and the powerful civil rights activism that led to the school’s desegregation. \nThe tour will begin and end at Founder’s Hall. The museum in Founder’s Hall is open 10-2\, so feel free to come early or stay afterwards to explore the exhibit. \n \nBefore you go\n\nThis walk will cover about 3/4 mile and will include stairs and uneven surfaces\nBecause Girard College is an active school\, you will quickly check in with security when arriving on campus.\nParking is available for free on-site; we are also accessible by several bus lines and are a half-mile walk from the Girard Avenue subway stop.\nCheck out www.foundershall.org for more information about our programs\, collections\, and online resources

SUMMARY:The Battle of the Vines: Mount Vernon Cemetery Civil War Veterans Tour
DESCRIPTION:A guided tour devoted to those who fought for freedom during the American Civil War.\n\n\nMany of you have asked for it\, and we’re both honored and pleased to finally be able to offer it to you: Mount Vernon Cemetery’s first ever CIVIL WAR VETERANS TOUR. \nAfter 3 long years of battling the vines\, the Friends of Mount Vernon Cemetery have located a sizable number of graves of those who fought (and in some cases died) during the American Civil War. \nJoin us for this inaugural off-roads guided tour that is not only designed to take visitors all throughout the property’s 28 acres of rolling hills and overgrown fields\, but will include a diverse selection of incredible stories about MVC’s more significant veteran burials. Stops and stories include: medal of honor awardees\, naval engineers\, men killed in the Battles of Gettysburg and Williamsburg\, famous physicians\, a POW of Libby Prison\, a member of the Pennsylvania Cavalry who went on to become the city’s first mass murderer\, and more!! \nThe tales (and tombstones) the Friends have unearthed for this tour are truly incredible. We look forward to sharing them all with you\, many for the first time. \nFor those of you who are into historical reinactments\, feel free to dress in costume! \n \nThis tour is sponsored and conducted by members of the Friends of Mount Vernon Cemetery. \nReminders: \n\nPlease meet at MVC’s main gate. Located at the corner of Ridge and Lehigh Avenues.\nThe tour will be going offroad. Regardless of weather – or costume – we strongly recommend wearing comfortable closed-toed shoes.\nIt is essential to arrive on time. If you arrive late\, once the gate is closed and locked\, there is no coming back for you.\nMVC is in a court-appointed conservatorship. As such\, all visitors will need to sign an access waiver. Paperwork will be provided to you upon arrival.\nAll visitors are required to follow all rules and guidelines set forth by the cemetery’s conservators and by the Friends of Mount Vernon Cemetery. Failure to adhere to these rules will result in immediate expulsion from the grounds without refund\, and you will be banned from participating in future MVC public events.
