DESCRIPTION:Learn a new craft while exploring place-making in Germantown via GIH’s Zine-making workshops.\n\n\nFor the next few months\, the Germantown Info Hub is happy to host zine-making workshops where neighbors can learn a simple but powerful form of storytelling with ordinary materials that you may have lying around your home. \nThese workshops will blend art\, memory\, journalism\, and narrative to explore community history\, create visions for the future\, and explore our personal utopias. DESCRIPTION:Join the Historical Society of Pennsylvania (HSP)\, in partnership with the Taller Puertorriqueño\, as they host Juan González\, the 200th Anniversary signature speaker for the theme America’s Promise and Its Many Voices. In the talk\, González explores the history of Puerto Rican migration from the island to Pennsylvania\, delving into the economic\, social\, and political factors driving these migrations\, highlighting personal stories and community impact\, and examining Puerto Rico’s complex role within the United States and its effects on migration. González is an award-winning journalist and investigative reporter who spent 29 years as a columnist for the New York Daily News and 10 years with the Philadelphia Daily News. He is a two-time George Polk Award winner and co-host of Democracy Now! since 1996. An accomplished author\, his works include Harvest of Empire and News for All the People. González also served as the Richard D. Heffner Professor at Rutgers University and is a founder of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. Before journalism\, he was a civil rights activist\, co-founding the Young Lords Party in the late 1960s. Born in Ponce\, Puerto Rico\, he grew up in New York City.\nThe event is being offered in a hybrid format\, with tickets available online and onsite. DESCRIPTION:Join us on a special site visit and tour of Dale Hendricks’ home and the site of Green Light Plants in Landenberg\, PA. Dale’s home and plant nursery sit on a 12-acre piece of a formerly abandoned farm. Dale will take us on a tour of the land where we will see a variety of garden areas\, lots of lovely woodland and prairie native plants\, a small nursery area\, and several food forest plantings that include walnuts\, pawpaws\, persimmon\, and a plethora of other multi-functional trees. Dale will also talk and walk us through his work with habitat enhancement using both plantings and seed addition\, also known as rewilding. Dale is a former co-owner of North Creek Nurseries\, a regionally renowned native landscape plug provider. He now owns a part-time nursery business\, Green Light Plants\, a small permaculture plant provider. We will meet at Dale’s home in Landenberg; the address will be emailed to all registrants before the tour.

DESCRIPTION:Observing and recording your backyard biodiversity findings is both an art and a science. Learn some tools for both!\n\n\nExplore the basics of nature journaling with local extraordinaire Carol Welsh\, and bolster your skills in navigating scientific apps like iNaturalist and BirdNet to record your wildlife findings. \nWatercolor paper and paints provided\, although you are welcome to bring your favorite supplies for nature journaling in the field. Participants are responsible for providing their own sturdy shoes\, sun/tick protection\, and refillable water bottle. You are welcome to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy after the class! \nThe Lancaster Conservancy has protected over 10\,000 acres of natural lands\, which are critically important to supporting biodiversity. Smaller patches of native habitats spread throughout urban landscapes are also essential to creating corridors of habitat – food and refuge – for wildlife. This is why we are offering our fall 2024 Habitat Advocate Certification program at Tec Centro in Lancaster City. \nThe cost of the Habitat Advocate classes covers instructor fees. If the cost of this class is prohibitive\, please reach out to Keith Williams\, VP of Engagement and Education\, at kwilliams@lancasterconservancy.org. \n \nYour Presenters\nElyse Jurgen\, owner of Waxwing EcoWorks Co.\, is a community collaborator working to rebuild ecological literacy and biodiversity through hands-on ecological gardening experiences in South Central PA. She is certified as a Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional and Ecological/Permaculture Designer\, along with earning an Ecological Gardening Certification from Mt. Cuba Center. She has a master’s degree in Environmental Education\, 7-12 Biology Teaching Certification\, and participated in Cornell University’s Civic Ecology program. \nElyse works alongside homeowners in a participatory approach to their gardening for wildlife needs\, infusing educational opportunities during the design\, installation\, and stewarding process. She invites homeowners to deeply engage with their land to maximize its potential in enhancing human well-being and supporting dwindling wildlife populations. \nCarol Welsh began the practice of nature journaling as she retired from the Educational Foundations Department at Millersville University. She has studied with John Muir Laws in California and with various instructors at the Hog Island ME Audubon Camp. Carol has provided journaling workshops in numerous locations including most recently with the PA State Park Educators. Carol serves as VP of the board at Homefields Organic Care Farm and enjoys creating journal pages through the year at the farm and at the Conservancy’s properties. \n \nAbout this Class\nNote\, you must have taken the prerequisite “Habitat Advocate: Building Biodiversity in our Community” prior to taking this course. Plus a Live Performance of Kelpius’ Hymns.\nWe will explore some of the mysticism\, mythology\, religion\, legends\, history\, art\, music\, and architecture found within the Wissahickon. We will have ample time to examine these from the three different perspectives of history\, theology\, and psychology. Along the way\, we will visit Lover’s Leap\, the Henry Avenue Bridge\, the Hermitage\, and Kelpius’ Cave. At each of these sites\, we will consider topics ranging from hidden subway stations\, apocalyptic movements\, and the Wissahickon’s most famous hermit.\nFor the first time we will hear a live performance of the rich sounds and words of some of the most loved hymns that Kelpius composed\, performed live at his cave. Not to be missed!\nThis hike is suitable for ages 12+\nDistance: 2.5 miles\nLevel: Moderate (some inclines and declines\, uneven surfaces)\nRegistration is required for all hikes so that participants can be informed of weather or other emergency cancellations.\nUnless otherwise specified\, Trail Ambassador Walks may be on rocky\, rugged trails that may be wet and slippery. SUMMARY:American Chestnut Tour
DESCRIPTION:FOR ADULTS AND TEENS AGES 15-17\nIn the first half of the 20th century\, the American chestnut tree was all but eliminated from the forests of eastern North America by an imported fungal disease\, commonly known as chestnut blight. In cooperation with the American Chestnut Foundation\, Tyler Arboretum is host to a preservation orchard where surviving examples of this tree are raised and bred as part of the conservation effort to restore this iconic tree to eastern forests. Join expert Dan O’Keefe for a tour of the orchard to learn about the American chestnut tree\, its significance\, and efforts to achieve resistance to the fungal blight. September is harvest time in the Chestnut Orchard. Dan will have seeds for all!\nPlease arrive by 10:15 am and go directly to the Chestnut Orchard\, not Tyler’s Visitor Center. Directions to the Chestnut Orchard from Tyler’s main entrance: turn left onto Painter Road and travel 3/10 of a mile; the Orchard entrance will be on your right. (If you pass the fenced-in giant sequoia tree on your left\, you’ve gone slightly too far). A guide will be stationed at the entrance to direct you to the parking area.\nPRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED\nMEMBERS (sign in for your discount!): $5 per adult; $3 per teen ages 15-17\nAMERICAN CHESTNUT FOUNDATION MEMBERS: $5 per adult\nNON-MEMBERS: $21 per adult; $13 per teen ages 15-17. The non-member fee includes admission to Tyler for the day. Stay as long as you’d like!\nGUEST PASS HOLDERS (for non-members only): $5 per adult guest; $3 per teen guest. This rally will\nlaunch the TAKE 5: Stop the Violence Campaign with an active response to the need for\naccessible strategies that promote and support violence de-escalation. The event will\nhighlight a sequence of concerted efforts designed to saturate the City of Philadelphia with a\nmessage Proposing Personal Pause\, Teaching Tangible Tolerance and Cultivating a Culture of\nPeace (Count\, “1\,2\,3\,4\,5 Take 5). The day will also gather Philadelphia’s Community of Peace\nWorkers to celebrate the work done during the United Nations’ International Peace Week.\nViolence is a pervasive presence in our society. How do we stop its spread\, and how can we\nmanage the anger and frustration that can often result in a violent outcome? Philadelphia\nnative Warren Cooper is on a mission to Pass The Peace! The TAKE 5: Stop the Violence\nCampaign is a behavioral science approach to what is\, at its root\, a behavioral health\nissue. The approach of Taking 5 is a simple hands-on way to begin the process of adjusting\nthe hardwired default settings in our communities from entitled reactivity to proactive\npeacekeeping – one person at a time – one situation at a time – one community at a time. In\nthe weeks and months to follow\, Berean will serve as a Peace destination for workshops and\nmeetings on anti-violence programs and services.
