According to the Farmers Almanac\, November’s moon is called the “Beaver Moon” because it signals the time when beavers begin to take shelter in their lodges before the long winter ahead. Native American tribes have also referred to it as the “Digging Moon”\, “Deer Rutting Moon”\, and “Whitefish Moon”. \nFirst\, we’ll use the moonlight to guide us on a short hike on the Lemon Hill Rim Trail\, appreciating nature lit by the glowing moon. Next\, we’ll turn our attention to the moon itself by ending the hike with a guided moon and planet observation. Novice and experienced astronomers alike will be given insights and tips by experienced instructor Buddy Muhler. Each attendee will have the chance to travel close up to the moon’s surface by looking through Buddy’s high-powered telescope! Buddy will discuss the lunar cycles and point out interesting visible surface features such as dark gray mares (seas) and white reflective highlands. We’ll gaze at planets and discuss other astronomical wonders of the night sky. \nIf you’re a lunar lunatic\, this is an evening not to miss! \nEstimated distance: 2 miles\nLevel: easy to moderate\nTerrain: combination of flat open parkland and hilly trails \nINSTRUCTOR BIO: Buddy Muhler is a passionate astronomer and science educator. He has over 15 years experience operating telescopes and educating the public on astronomy\, first at The Franklin Institute and now in his current position with The Academy of Natural Sciences. \n\nTICKET PRICES: Pay what you can – $10\, $15\, or $20\n[ Not sure what to pay? Please refer to this Sliding Scale Pricing FAQ for additional info. ] \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO: \n\nThis hike is roughly two miles in length over a combination of open parkland and hilly terrain (easy-moderate exertion).\nAppropriate for adults and families with children ages 6 and up. Minors must be registered and accompanied by an adult.\nPlease dress according to weather conditions and wear good hiking shoes (boots/sneakers).\nPlease bring your own water and snacks (drinking water is not available in the park).\nThere are no nearby bathrooms so please plan accordingly.\nWe will leave a few minutes after the scheduled start time. Please arrive at the departure location at least five minutes early. We cannot guarantee that latecomers can join after the group has departed.\nAttendees are encouraged to bring their own telescopes or high-powered binoculars.\nFriendly dogs on leash are welcome.\nWe will use moonlight whenever possible\, but for portions of the trail\, we recommend bringing a flashlight\, headlamp\, or fully charged smartphone.\nFeel free to bring blankets/lawn chairs for the telescope observation portion.\n\n\nPARKING/GETTING THERE: There is plenty of free parking available in the park. As always\, NEVER leave valuables in your car! If traveling by public transit\, the nearest stops are at 31st and Girard Ave and Art Museum Drive – both are a 1/2 mile walk from the start. The nearest Indego bike station is at 31st and Girard – also a 1/2 mile from the start. \n\n\n\n  \n\nQUESTIONS? Please reach out to programs@myphillypark.org \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition and Artist's Talk: Before the Plate: Andrew DeCaen
DESCRIPTION:Holy Family University Art Gallery\nEducation and Technology Center (first floor)\n9801 Frankford Avenue\nPhiladelphia\, Pa 19114\nhttps://holyfamilyartgallery.wordpress.com/\nGallery Hours: 7:30am-5pm\nExhibition Dates: 11/15/23 – 12/4/23\nReception and Artist’s Gallery Talk: Wednesday 11/29\, Noon\nEntrance: Free and open to the public\nContact (gallery Info): Professor Pamela Flynn\, Gallery Director\, pflynn12@holyfamily.edu\nContact (artist): Andrew DeCaen\, andrew@andrewdecaen.com\nPhiladelphia\, PA\, Holy Family University is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of artworks by Andrew DeCaen. The exhibition will include flat and sculptural works on paper using lithography\, screen-printing\, laser-etched and folded paper. The work will be on view from November eleventh to December fourth at the Holy Family University Art Gallery on the first floor of the Education and Technology Center. The artist will be present for a reception and gallery talk on Wednesday 11/29 at Noon. \nEXHIBITION STATEMENT: Before the Plate\nWhy are rituals surrounding a meal so important to all cultures? What does it mean to share a meal with someone? How does this mundane experience shape our lives? This exhibition explores visual metaphors surrounding the psychology of a meal. Andrew DeCaen’s flat and sculptural works on paper depict varied situational meal scenes that ask open-ended questions about fellowship\, community\, influence\, longing\, and instinct. They explore the space and experience of being before the plate.\nThis exhibition explores Andrew DeCaen’s continuing themes of rituals surrounding food. The imagery slows down mundane experiences to linger in the smallest moments. These artworks use the theme of eating as a metaphor to explore the concept of the individual in relation to others and to community. The works use printmaking’s natural layering techniques to explore simultaneous space and time and the processes of learning\, remembering\, and forgetting. These images explore the intimacy of familiar experiences while asking fundamental questions about who we are. \nDecaen’s Blue Plans series and Gathering series are featured prominently in the exhibition. The Blue Plans series employ blue lines as a way of connecting to both the analytical side of planning and the emotional side of accepting imperfect realities. There are references to architectural schematics\, exploded diagrams\, and isometric drawings contrasted by figures inhabiting those theoretical spaces. Among the Blue Plans series\, a paper sculpture called Handle Burn mimics the form of a perforated oven mitt. The Gathering series includes a group of nearly identical prints depicting an extended family meal. Each variation removes different people from the table to suggest shifted family dynamics of those present and those missing. A sculptural piece called Inevitable Object depicts the same imagery on the surface of a holiday party “popper” set on a plate with utensils. \nBIO STATEMENT:\nAndrew DeCaen’s artworks use drawing\, printmaking\, and sculpture to examine rituals and habits surrounding the space\, time\, and ways we eat\, prepare\, and acquire our meals. DeCaen grew up in southern California\, received a BA from the University of Dallas and an MFA from the University of South Dakota. His artworks have been shown broadly in the US and internationally in Argentina\, Brazil\, Bulgaria\, Canada\, China\, Columbia\, Denmark\, England\, Finland\, Italy\, Japan\, Korea\, Romania\, Sweden\, and Turkey. SUMMARY:Business for Impact Workshop: Foundation Funding for Impact-Driven Businesses
DESCRIPTION:Join SBN for an interactive workshop with Elizabeth Killough\, Co-CEO of the UnTours Foundation\, on how impact-driven businesses can apply and work with foundations. \nImpact-driven businesses are often pushed towards traditional bank loans to obtain critical funding for their work. While bank loans are an important source of funding\, they often lead to high levels of debt. Loans are not the only answer. In the greater Philadelphia region\, there is an extensive and growing network of Foundations that are able to lend to impact-driven businesses. During this workshop\, we’ll explore how these foundations operate\, why a business’s impact matters to foundations\, and how businesses can position themselves to receive funding. \nThis workshop will be led by Elizabeth Killough\, Co-CEO of the UnTours Foundation\, an international foundation based in Media\, PA. The foundation provides loans and support to leading-edge businesses that address social\, economic\, and environmental issues\, including creating jobs for vulnerable populations. Guests are encouraged to bring questions to this highly interactive and participatory lunchtime session. \nDate: Wednesday\, November 29 \nTime: 12 – 1pm \nLocation: Virtual (registrants will be sent a Zoom link before program) \nThis program is FREE for SBN members and non-members.

SUMMARY:Firebird: Built to Burn Theatrical Premiere
DESCRIPTION:A Story That’s Waited Eighteen Years To Be Told!\nFirebird: Built to Burn delves into a year in the making of the beloved Firebird Festival\, where a tight-knit community gathers every December to ignite a giant wooden phoenix. Fueled by their rustbelt spirit\, a diverse group of volunteers persevere through pandemic restrictions\, local government negotiations\, and months of arduous building to orchestrate a cathartic come-back festival after their absence in 2020. Told through intimate interviews and fly-on-the-wall verité\, Firebird: Built to Burn is a wholesome look into an unconventional tradition.\nThe premiere of ‘Firebird: Built to Burn’ is Wednesday\, November 29th\, at 7:00 PM. There will be a post-film discussion with the filmmakers after the screening. You can purchase tickets at The Colonial Theatre’s website. A limited engagement will continue through December 14th.

DeCaen’s artworks have been featured in publications as Drawing magazine\, Printmaking Today\, and 500 Paper Objects. DeCaen lives and works in Denton\, Texas where he is an Associate Professor of Art at the University of North Texas.\nwww.andrewdecaen.com
