Then join longtime Wissahickon steward David Bower\, his dedicated team of Crew Leaders and Trail Ambassadors\, and our partners at Friends of Cresheim Trail for a variety of stewardship projects!\nAll are welcome to attend\, and no experience is needed. We encourage attendees to work within their own comfort level\, and we always strive to accommodate needs on an individual basis. With that being said\, this service day may include the following activities:\n• Trail work: using long-handled tools\, moving heavy objects\n• Invasive plant removal: bending over\, using long handled tools\n• Litter clean-up\n• Repetitive motions\nWe provide gloves\, tools\, and instruction–you just need to show up! Keep your eyes peeled for brilliant bluebirds flitting about\, discover active nests with delicate eggs\, and maybe even spot fuzzy nestlings waiting for their next meal. Along the way\, learn about cavity-nesting birds and how you can help these feathered friends thrive.\nThis program is a perfect outing for curious kids and nature-loving grown-ups alike—bring your binoculars and a sense of wonder!\nWhen you arrive\, please check in first at the Visitor Center\, then meet your guide on the Visitor Center patio by 9:30 am.\nFor this tour\, we will be walking on grassy fields. DESCRIPTION:An Introduction to Setting Type and Printing on a Vandercook Press at the Soapbox Community Print Shop & Zine Library.\n\n\nLearn the basics of printing letterpress at The Soapbox\, from setting type\, to locking up your form on the press\, to printing (and cleaning!) using the Vandercook cylinder press. Other methods of image making will be discussed. Explore our type drawers and gain the basic skills you need to work during Open Hours. A materials fee covers paper\, ink\, other consumables\, and studio maintenance. \nPlease note: Masks are required for this workshop\, regardless of vaccination status. The instructor reserves the right to ask you to leave if you do not comply. \n \nAbout the Instructor \nBelle Handler is a disabled artist living and practicing on Lenapehoking. Her work and studio practice emerge from the intersection of lived experience with disability\, and reproductive print technologies spanning from traditional letterpress printing to contemporary computer-aided design and CNC machining. \nShe is a letterpress fellow and board member at the Soapbox Community Print studio in Philadelphia\, and holds a BA in Environmental Studies from Haverford College. As a studio assistant in the Hurford Center’s Maker Arts Space\, Belle expanded her studio practice to include art education and community-building. Her current work focuses on the history and technology of handset type and the idea that artmaking and printmaking are pivotal resources for disabled communities and individuals. \n \nCost\n$40 for Current Members of the Soapbox/$45 for Non-Members \nPlus a $15 materials fee that covers ink\, paper\, and use of our equipment.

DESCRIPTION:Dispose of your electronic waste sustainably during Earth Week with PAR!\n\n\nHelp us celebrate Earth Week by participating in an electronics recycling drive. This event is a collaboration between Haverford’s Committee for Environmental Responsibility (CER)\, the Arboretum\, and PAR-Recycleworks. Large appliances\, light bulbs\, and batteries will not be accepted. All data on devices is wiped and destroyed. \n \nThis event will take place in the South Lot. The drive will then be open to the entire community from 12:00 noon – 2:00 p.m. Most items are able to be recycled free of cost\, but some items have a cost in order to ensure they are properly taken apart for recycling (please see exact pricing below). Payment can be via cash\, or check (Made Payable to: PAR Recycleworks). \n \nMembers of the Haverford College Community (Students\, Staff\, and Faculty only) will be able to recycle their electronics from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon on the same day\, free of charge. This class is a good beginning to working with air dry clay. \nIn the second class when your piece is dry\, we will be painting them. Class is from 6:00pm-8:00pm. When signing up for this class\, you are comitting to attend both sessions. \nTacony LAB Class Enrollment and Attendance Policy \nAttendance Policy: We understand that traffic and other delays happen\, however we request you to be on time to our events. We have a 15 minute grace period. If we are not notified and you are more than 15 minutes late\, you may not be permitted to join the class. DESCRIPTION:An introduction to Screenprinting at the Soapbox Community Print Shop & Zine Library in West Philadelphia.\n\n\nAbout this Event \nIn this beginning course you will learn the basics of screenprinting. Participants will bring a prepared image and we will provide all the materials\, tools and training. Learn the protocol of our printshop and darkroom\, as well as health and safety standards for screenprinting. Turn your image into a screen and print an edition of posters\, greeting cards or even t-shirts! With the completion of this beginner course\, students will be prepared to take more specialized\, intermediate courses. Students may also choose to take this beginner course again with a personalized emphasis on multilayer printing. Our classroom environment is welcoming to all skill levels and we strive to make our shop accessible to new and experienced printers alike. A materials fee covers paper\, ink\, use of a screen\, and other consumables.  \nPlease note: Masking is now encouraged\, but optional in the studio space. Cullina is a well-known author and a recognized authority on North American native plants. \n  \nDoris Wagner\nDiMaura Professor of Biology\, \nPenn Arts & Sciences \nDoris Wagner is the inaugural director of the Penn Plant Adaptability and Resilience Center (Plant ARC)\, a multidisciplinary center housed in the Department of Biology. The Center focuses on enhancing plant development and fortitude in the face of increasingly common extreme and unpredictable weather events such as heat waves\, droughts\, and floods. Wagner is a leader in the fields of plant biology\, chromatin modification\, and epigenetics\, which involves the reprogramming of cell identity and function. She has received numerous grants from the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health\, and serves as editor-in-chief of Current Opinions in Plant Biology. SUMMARY:From Kelpius to the Rod of Iron: Cults and New Religious Movements in Pennsylvania
DESCRIPTION:The state of Pennsylvania and the city of Philadelphia are home to a diverse array of churches and religious organizations. This program will outline the history of some of the most famous religious monuments of our region. We will begin in the 17th century with the figure of Johannes Kelpius\, a German Pietist who established an apocalyptic religious community in the Wissahickon Valley. We will then move to the 19th century to examine the Theosophical Society\, a new religion that merged East and West\, whose United Lodge is still located in Center City. We will conclude by discussing the Iron Rod Ministries\, an offshoot of the Korean American Unification Church\, which until recently was headquartered in Wayne County\, east of the city of Scranton. \nOri Tavor is a Senior Lecturer in Chinese Studies and Director of the MA Program at the department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations\, the University of Pennsylvania. DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “The Life of Barbie\,” on a plastic icon and her cultural legacy\, with Emily Aguiló-Pérez\, an associate professor of English at West Chester University of Pennsylvania who has extensively researched Barbie as a scholar of childhood\, media\, and popular culture. \nFew toys have shaped culture quite like Barbie has. From her debut in 1959 to the billion-dollar success of the 2023 film bearing her name\, Barbie has been a mirror of society\, a lightning rod for controversy\, and a symbol of transformation. She often has found herself at the center of society’s evolving conversations about gender\, race\, consumerism\, and identity. \nGet to know Barbie like you never did before with the help of Emily Aguiló-Pérez\, the author of An American Icon in Puerto Rico: Barbie\, Girlhood\, and Colonialism at Play and the forthcoming books Barbie in the Media and Barbie and Social Media. \nDrawing from more than a decade of scholarly research on Barbie’s significance in global contexts\, Professor Aguiló-Pérez will discuss Barbie’s evolution from fashion model to feminist (and anti-feminist) flashpoint. While Barbie wasn’t originally designed as a feminist toy\, she would emerge as an emblem of female empowerment\, with the first astronaut Barbie\, produced in 1965\, exploring space before Neil Armstrong visited the Moon. At the same time\, she would continue to face criticism for reinforcing restrictive beauty norms\, with her measurements remaining unrealistic even in the “body diverse” versions of the doll—curvy\, petite and tall. \nWe’ll explore Barbie’s shifting cultural impact—her role in shaping beauty standards\, gender expectations\, and consumer culture. You’ll learn about Barbie’s global influence and how she continues to spark conversations about identity\, inclusivity\, and play. \nWhether you loved Barbie\, loathed her\, or rediscovered her through Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster Barbie movie\, you’ll find this talk to be a fascinating journey through the life of the world’s most famous doll\, and you’ll learn a lot about what she reveals about us. An executive assistant at an international consulting firm by profession\, Julie shows a clear example of how to be a modern\, lay Buddhist practitioner in a busy city and presents Buddha’s teachings in an eloquent and inspiring manner. \nClasses take place on Tuesdays from 7:00-8:00pm.

Why do we have lawns? They were at first a symbol of wealth and only became commonplace after the Industrial Revolution. But lawns are an invasive species!  They require large amounts of water consumption and chemicals to keep pristine and green\, killing off the beneficial insects (bees!!)\, and endless mowing contributes to unnecessary carbon emissions. \n     \nJudy Wicks and Paige Menton will offer you alternatives that are easier to care for and better for the environment. Native plants attract beneficial insects and other pollinators and are drought-tolerant. \nOur lives depend on our little pollinator friends. There is no us without them. Come enjoy Earth Day with friends\, listen to live music\, and hear about alternatives to traditional lawns. Learn how to turn your yard into a meadow\, add a few pollinator garden beds to your yard\, or add some native pots to your stoop. No matter the size of your property\, your budget\, or your gardening expertise\, you can make whatever changes work for you. We will have native plants for sale.  \n \nJudy Wicks\n \nJudy Wicks grew up on the outskirts of Ingomar\, Pennsylvania\, where she developed a love for nature and an appreciation for the role of small businesses in community life. After earning a BA in English in 1969\, she spent a year as a VISTA volunteer in Chefornak\, Alaska\, where she experienced a culture rooted in sharing and cooperation. This insight deepened during the 1990s when she worked with Zapatista revolutionaries in Chiapas\, Mexico\, to establish a fair-trade coffee initiative. Her work with small farmers in Chiapas and Pennsylvania helped shape her vision of a global economy based on self-reliant\, sustainable local economies connected through fair trade relationships. \nIn pursuit of this vision\, Judy founded the Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia in 2001 and co-founded the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE)\, now Common Future. She is best known as the founder of Philadelphia’s landmark White Dog Cafe\, a pioneer in the farm-to-table movement\, which she ran for 26 years. Under her leadership\, White Dog gained national recognition for its commitment to local food sourcing\, sustainability\, and community engagement. The restaurant set industry standards by purchasing only humanely raised meats\, sustainably harvested seafood\, and fair-trade products while also implementing eco-friendly practices like composting\, solar heating\, and 100% renewable energy use. \nBeyond the restaurant industry\, Judy launched initiatives to support sustainable local economies. She founded Fair Food Philly to connect local family farms with urban markets and operated Black Cat\, a fair-trade gift shop. In 2015\, she established the Circle of Aunts & Uncles\, a microloan fund providing low-interest loans to entrepreneurs lacking traditional startup capital. Responding to the climate crisis\, she founded All Together Now Pennsylvania in 2019 to build resilient\, just\, and regenerative regional economies. After retiring from organizational leadership in 2023\, she passed the torch to her successors\, who rebranded the initiative as PA Fibershed to focus on sustainable regional textiles. \nCurrently\, Judy and her daughter\, Grace\, are creating a sustainable\, solar-powered homestead\, transforming a two-acre lawn into a thriving meadow\, orchard\, and vegetable garden. The homestead will serve as an educational and community gathering space. Throughout her career\, Judy has received numerous accolades\, including the James Beard Foundation Humanitarian of the Year Award and recognition from Oprah Magazine\, Inc.\, and Conde Nast Traveler. Her book Good Morning Beautiful Business won the Nautilus Book Award for Business Leadership and has been translated into Chinese and Korean. \n  \n\nAbout journeywork\n\n\nJourneywork collaborates with neighborhoods\, schools\, and congregations to give people the tools to enhance the ecological value of their landscapes. They grow and source plants\, provide design guidance\, and engage volunteers to help people improve the habitats they steward. They foster community dialogue\, education\, skill-building & sharing through workshops\, consultations\, and client work. Journeywork meets people where they are and seeks to revitalize the land\, one lawn at a time.  Their mission is to restore the land together\, joyfully.  \n\nPaige Menton\n \nPaige has been growing flowers and food for over twenty years. She took David Attenborough’s A Life on Our Planet as a call to action and founded Journeywork to offer people hopeful\, energizing ways to respond to climate change together. She has a permaculture design certification\, has taught gardening to children for several years\, and is the land manager at Gwynedd Friends Meeting. She is a former elementary school teacher and has a master’s in environmental education. She grew up in the Cahaba River watershed\, now lives near the headwaters of the Wissahickon\, and enjoys birding in both of those places and everywhere else. \n  \nBackyard Biome Design\nAt Backyard Biome Design\, we specialize in native landscape design and installation\, offering sustainable\, eco-friendly solutions for traditional landscapes. Our designs focus on enhancing local plant communities\, providing habitat and food for pollinators and wildlife. Using resilient native plants\, we create low-maintenance\, seasonally blooming gardens that thrive in harmony with the environment\, contributing meaningful ecological impact\, no matter the size of the space.\n\n \nJulie Britton\n \nJulie’s love for nature began in the rich forests of North Jersey\, which inspired her to earn a degree in Evolutionary Anthropology from Rutgers University. Her academic journey also led her to Kenya\, where she deepened her understanding of conservation and the natural world. Over the past 10+ years in Philadelphia\, Julie has continued to expand her expertise by studying horticulture and ecology at prestigious institutions like Longwood Gardens and Mt. Cuba. Currently she is working towards her Pennsylvania Master Naturalist certification. As a horticulturist\, she combines her knowledge of ecosystems\, sustainability\, and design to create beautiful landscapes that foster a healthier\, more balanced environment.\n\n \nMiles Christenson\n \nWith a diverse background in the arts\, Miles perceives nature not just as a landscape\, but as a vibrant palette from which to craft beautiful and diverse gardens that endure over time. His many years of field experience has led him to create innovative and sustainable landscape management solutions to offer quality service. The deep love and connection to nature inspires his designs and keeps his hands dirty in the field.\n \n \nJeff Alexander \n \n\nJeff Alexander is a seasoned and dynamic musician. His specialties in guitar and vocals showcase Jeff’s personal influences from artists like Jimi Hendrix\, Tommy Emmanuel\, Ritchie Kotzen\, and Al Dimeola\, with his unique flare. He delivers recognizable songs that are proven ‘crowd-pleasers’\, and incorporates climactic originals. \nJeff has organized\, played in and collaborated with multiple Philly-based bands\, cataloging original and cover songs. He has been featured on film\, wedding bands\, played in local festivals such as Roxyunk Porchfest and currently hosts the monthly open mic at The Fallser Club.
