DESCRIPTION:Welsh Road Library will host Minas for a small music program. \nMinas introduces students to the country of Brazil through its music\, Samba and Bossa Nova. After performing examples of Brazilian music and presenting historic\, geographical and educational references\, they introduce Brazil’s famous festival Carnaval\, demonstrating authentic Brazilian percussion instruments – surdo\, tamborim\, repinique\, agogô\, reco-reco\, ganzá\, pandeiro\, and cuíca. Participation is enhanced by engaging students to sing in Portuguese (the language of Brazil)\, scat\, and play Brazilian samba percussion (instruments supplied). Then join us for a variety of stewardship projects!\nAll are welcome to attend\, and no experience is needed. We encourage attendees to work within their own comfort level\, and we always strive to accommodate needs on an individual basis. With that being said\, this service day may include the following activities:\n• Trail work: using long-handled tools\, moving heavy objects\n• Plantings: bending over\, crouching/squatting\, carrying up to 20 lbs\n• Invasive plant removal: bending over\, using long handled tools\n• Litter clean-up\n• Repetitive motions\nWe provide gloves\, tools\, and instruction–you just need to show up! DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion with Ruth Ben-Ghiat for a conversation on the role that media must play in keeping democracy alive and well.\n\n\nIf 2024 was the year of democracy—a year that saw more people worldwide heading to the polls than ever before—then what is in store for 2025? Early returns are worrisome: political repression continues to throttle civil society movements while global media struggles to keep pace with rampant information manipulation and propaganda. In many places autocratic leaders are tightening their grip on power and democratic backsliding seems to be on the rise globally. Join Perry World House as we welcome Ruth Ben-Ghiat\, an expert on fascism and authoritarian movements\, who will talk about our current global political moment in history\, how it echoes with authoritarianism of the past\, and the critical role media must play in order to keep democracy alive and well. \n\n\nSPEAKER\n \nRuth Ben-Ghiat is Professor of History and Italian Studies at New York University. She writes about authoritarianism\, propaganda\, and democracy protection. She is the recipient of Guggenheim and other fellowships and appears frequently on MSNBC She publishes Lucid\, a Substack newsletter on threats to democracy in the U.S. and abroad. \nHer latest book\, Strongmen: Mussolini to the Present examines how authoritarian leaders use corruption\, violence\, propaganda\, and machismo to stay in power\, and how resistance to them has unfolded over a century. She is also a consultant for television and film productions\, including the Academy Award-winning 2022 movie Pinocchio (Guillermo del Toro\, 2022)\, and the Netflix docuseries Hitler and the Nazis: Evil on Trial (Joe Berlinguer\, 2024). \nShe testified to the House Jan. 6 Committee and advises civil society organizations\, including churches and multinational corporations\, that face autocratic interferences in the US and around the world. As an advisor to Protect Democracy\, she was part of a 2019 Amicus Curiae brief in the context of PEN America’s lawsuit against the Trump administration’s attempts to stifle press freedoms. And in January 2024 she co-authored an amicus brief submitted to the Supreme Court on the January 6 insurrection seen through the lens of the history of international anti-democratic violence. \n \nMODERATOR\nSarah Banet-Weiser\, the Walter H. Annenberg Dean of the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania\, is also its Lauren Berlant Professor of Communication. In addition\, she is a research professor at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism and the founding director of the Center for Collaborative Communication at the Annenberg Schools (C3). \nHer teaching and research interests include gender in the media\, identity\, citizenship\, and cultural politics\, consumer culture and popular media\, race and the media\, and intersectional feminism. Committed to intellectual and activist conversations that explore how global media politics are exercised\, expressed\, and perpetuated in different cultural contexts\, she has authored or edited eight books\, including Believability: Sexual Violence\, Media\, and the Politics of Doubt (Polity Press\, 2023)\, the award-winning Authentic™: The Politics of Ambivalence in a Brand Culture (NYU Press\, 2012)\, Empowered: Popular Feminism and Popular Misogyny (Duke\, 2018)\, and dozens of peer-reviewed articles\, book chapters\, and essays. In 2019-2020\, she had a regular column on popular feminism in the Los Angeles Review of Books. \nHer research is deeply interdisciplinary\, as is her scholarly editorial work. She was formerly the editor of the flagship journal of the American Studies Association\, American Quarterly\, as well as co-editor of the International Communication Association journal\, Communication\, Culture\, Critique\, and was the founding co-editor of the New York University Press book series\, Critical Cultural Communication Studies. Banet-Weiser has been the recipient of international fellowships and visiting professorships at\, among others\, the Fondation Maison des sciences de l’homme in Paris\, France; the Gulbenkian Foundation and the University of Portugal in Lisbon\, Portugal; Microsoft Research New England (the social media collective); and McGill University in Montreal (Media@McGill Scholar). She is also a Fellow of the International Communication Association. \nBanet-Weiser is the recipient of scholarly and mentoring awards\, including the Constance Rourke Prize for Best Article in American Quarterly\, and the Mellon Graduate Student Mentoring Award. She is a Distinguished Faculty Fellow at the Center for Excellence in Teaching at the University of Southern California. DESCRIPTION:A textile reuse\, mending\, and upcycling gathering. Drop-in every other week!\n\n\nBYO mending projects. I’ll be on hand to help\, whether it’s darning\, patching\, or something else. Some basic supplies (needles\, embroidery thread\, pins\, scissors\, sewing machine\, iron\, interfacing\, basic thread) will be provided. \nFeel free to BYO handcraft\, specific color thread\, etc. \nThis gathering is about repairing our clothes and extending the life of our textile belongings\, together. Come fix that hole in your sock\, sew on that button\, hem that pair of pants. \nShow up\, hang out\, and fix your things. \nWhile this isn’t a formal workshop or class\, support is available for problem solving and technique. We can look at things and figure them out together. Some sewing experience is helpful\, but not required. Demos are available for new techniques and tricks. \nEvery other Wednesday evening\, 6:30-8:30pm\, at Starr Garden Community Center. Suggested donation is $10 for supplies\, but everyone is welcome regardless. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the natural beauty of Mt. Cuba’s forests and meadows this fall and winter as you experience the change of seasons – from autumn’s foliage to winter’s serenity. Become familiar with our native flora as you improve your health and explore the extensive walking trails in our natural lands.\nEach walk will be different and will cover approximately 2.5 to 3 miles. Dress for the weather\, bring a water bottle\, and be prepared for hilly (sometimes steep) and uneven terrain.\nThis program takes place in person in Mt. Cuba Center natural lands on Three Thursdays: 2/13\, 2/20\, & 2/27 (Rain Date: Thursday\, March 6).\nAbout the Instructor:\nEileen Hazard\, community outreach coordinator at Mt. Cuba Center\, enjoys connecting people to nature through gardening and science. She earned a BS in Civil Engineering from Lafayette College and an MS in Water Resources from the University of Vermont. She has supplemented her degrees with plant-focused biology classes at West Chester University\, a PA Master Naturalist certification\, and an Ecological Gardening Certificate. Prior to joining Mt. Cuba Center in 2014\, Eileen worked in environmental consulting and education.

DESCRIPTION:Building Ghosts: Past Lives and Lost Places in a Changing City (Temple University Press\, 2024) and the ghosts that reveal new truths.\n\n\n“Building ghosts” are the idiosyncratic remnants or imprints of demolished buildings\, left behind on the sides of neighboring structures. Mostly seen in older Northeastern cities with rowhomes or party-wall adjacencies\, they can reveal remarkable things\, such as an old staircase going up the side of a building or plaster traces left by a set of shelves in an attic gable. As history in our changing cities is erased and remade\, these ghosts can be ephemeral or enduring. They can be quickly revealed and replaced in a neighborhood seeing rapid change or unveiled and never re-covered in a neighborhood that has not seen new construction in a long time. For this event\, author Molly Lester and photographer Michael Bixler will discuss their new book\, Building Ghosts: Past Lives and Lost Places in a Changing City (Temple University Press\, November 2024) and the ghosts that reveal new truths and provocations about the changing city. \n \nThis event will be held at the Center for Design Philadelphia\, 1218 Arch Street\, Philadelphia PA 19107. \n \nRegistration is not required for in-person events\, however it is helpful for our planning. Join this Zine-Making and Bookbinding Workshop\, no experience is required! Zines are a great way of sharing your ideas with your community\, and we’ll work together to craft your zine! \nThis class will focus on creating a zine out of your idea\, covering how to make zines and bind small books. We’ll learn how to make 3 styles of zines. and 2 bookbinding styles. You can decide what matches your project best and by the end of class\, you’ll have a finished zine\, several blank zines and small books\, and knowledge of how to produce more copies! \nPlease note: We require all visitors to the Soapbox to wear masks\, regardless of their vaccination status. The instructor reserves the right to ask you to leave if you do not comply. \nAbout the instructor \nBread Tarleton is an award-winning cartoonist and zine-maker based in Philadelphia. They are a graduate of The Center for Cartoon Studies\, where they taught classes in Zine-making and Comics Publication\, and received an MFA in Cartooning. They are currently a fellow at The Soapbox Community Print Shop and the book editor at A.B.O. Comix\, a publisher that puts out the work of Incarcerated LGBTQ+ people. Their next book Soften the Blow is coming out with Fieldmouse Press in 2024. \nCost \n$40 for Current Soapbox Members/$45 for Non-Members \nPlus a $15 materials fee that covers paper\, thread\, and use of all tools and equipment.
