DESCRIPTION:SUITABLE FOR ADULTS AND TEENS AGES 15-17\nExperience the magic of Tyler at night!\nJoin us for a hike under the light of the full moon. Hiking at night is a unique sensory experience. We will use our senses of hearing\, smell and touch to navigate the forest. Our experienced guides will share points of special interest and seasonal highlights. We hope to see and hear some of the nocturnal wildlife that make a home in Tyler’s natural areas!\nThis moderately paced hike is for adults and teens comfortable walking 3+ miles on uneven terrain\, including short distances along steep trails. A registered adult must accompany teens. Bring a flashlight and wear sturdy hiking boots. Feel free to bring binoculars to observe the moon.\nThis program starts after Tyler’s closing hours. The gates will open 15 minutes before the program begins and close promptly 10 minutes after the start time\, so please be on time. DESCRIPTION:The Weekend Warm-up Hike returns to Tyler’s hiking trails! Start your Friday off right with a brisk\, one-hour hike through Tyler’s gardens and natural areas beyond the deer exclusion fence. This hike is intended as a moderate cardio workout\, and we typically cover 2 1/2 to 3 miles in an hour. However\, we reserve the right to pause and enjoy whatever surprises nature offers. Be prepared for a mix of asphalt\, gravel and natural surfaces. Hikes are not suitable for those with limited mobility. We recommend bringing along a reusable water bottle. Please make sure to pre-register\, as this program takes place outside our normal operating hours.\nGATES OPEN AT 8 am. SUMMARY:2024 Ullyot Public Affairs Lecture and Award: Omar Yaghi
DESCRIPTION:This annual public lecture celebrates the positive role that the chemical and molecular sciences play in our lives.\n\n\nThe 2024 Ullyot Public Affairs Lecture will be presented by Omar Yaghi\, James and Neeltje Tretter Chair Professor of Chemistry\, University of California\, Berkeley. \nEndowed in 1990 by chemist Glenn Edgar Ullyot\, this annual lecture seeks to emphasize to the general public the positive role the chemical and molecular sciences play in our daily lives. It is organized jointly with the Department of Chemistry and the Department of History and Sociology of Science at the University of Pennsylvania; the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of the Sciences; and the Philadelphia and Delaware sections of the American Chemical Society. \n\n\nAbout Omar Yaghi\nYaghi’s work encompasses the synthesis\, structure\, and properties of inorganic and organic compounds and the design and construction of new crystalline materials. He is widely known for pioneering several extensive classes of new materials: Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs)\, Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs)\, and Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks (ZIFs). These materials have the highest surface areas known to date\, making them useful for such purposes as hydrogen and methane storage\, carbon capture and conversion\, water harvesting from desert air\, and catalysis. The building-block approach he developed has led to an exponential growth in the creation of new materials having a diversity and multiplicity previously unknown in chemistry. He termed this field “Reticular Chemistry” and defines it as “stitching molecular building blocks into extended structures by strong bonds.” His work on MOFs\, COFs\, and ZIFs led to over 300 published articles\, which have received a total of more than 227\,000 citations. \nYaghi is the founding director of the Berkeley Global Science Institute\, whose mission is to build centers of research in developing countries and provide opportunities for young scholars to discover and learn. He is also the codirector of the Kavli Energy NanoSciences Institute (Kavli ENSI)\, focusing on the basic science of energy transformation on the molecular level; the California Research Alliance by BASF (CARA)\, supporting joint academia-industry innovations; as well as the Bakar Institute of Digital Materials for the Planet (BIDMaP)\, which aims to develop cost-efficient\, easily deployable versions of two classes of ultra porous materials—MOFs and COFs—to help limit and address the impacts of climate change. \nYaghi is an elected member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (2019)\, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2022)\, and the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina (2022). We are located in studio 14 on the second floor. Unfortunately there are no elevators to the second floor. You will need to go up a very large flight of steps to get to the second floor. The space is heated/cooled inside the pier and there are bathrooms located on site (on the first floor). There are often installations and events around the pier\, and the larger space is open from 12-8pm everyday.

With that being said\, this service day may include the following activities:\n• Trail work: carrying and using long-handled tools\, moving large rocks\n• Drain-clearing: carrying and using long handled tools\n• Planting: bending over\, crouching/squatting\, carrying up to 20 lbs\n• Invasive plant removal: bending over\, using long handled tools\n• Litter clean-up\n• Repetitive motions\nWe provide gloves\, tools\, and instruction–you just need to show up! Kesha continues to stay active outside of work as a beadwork artist and an advocate of black and indigenous history\, culture\, and environment. \nKelly Gutshall – Land Studies\, Inc.Kelly Gutshall\, RLA\, ASLA is president of LandStudies\, Inc.\, an ecological restoration design/build firm providing design\, engineering\, construction\, and maintenance services throughout the mid-Atlantic region. Kelly and her team of 45 professionals including Landscape Architects\, Engineers\, Scientists and Restoration Ecologists\, have pioneered solutions that utilize floodplain restoration and functional natural landscapes to solve some of the most pressing water resource and bio-diversity issues of our time. She particularly enjoys working collaboratively with community leaders at the local and state levels to help change perceptions about the landscape from purely aesthetic\, to one of working\, functional environments. Among other awards\, in 2019\, she was recognized by PennFuture with a Lifetime Achievement in Conservation for her contributions to the environment\, community\, water quality\, land protection and conservation. \nEva Monheim – Verdant Earth EducatorsEva Monheim is a speaker and an award-winning educator. She is a faculty member at Longwood Gardens for the Professional Horticulture Program and Continuing Education Department. She was an assistant professor at Temple University where she taught numerous subjects to undergraduate and graduate students in horticulture and landscape architecture. Investigating contexts from South Africa\, India\, Ireland\, the United States\, and Iran\, historian Nayan Shah explores the visceral ways that hunger striking communicates through media and political movements\, and how it can turn a personal agony into a call for collective action. \nCosponsored by The Andrea Mitchell Center for the Study of Democracy\, the Center for Advanced Research in Global Communication (CARGC)\, and the Department of History. \nNayan Shah is a historian whose books uncover how people struggle with incarceration\, migration\, and illness in the United States and across the globe. SUMMARY:Paradoxical Media: Freedom of Speech and Electoral Politics
DESCRIPTION:This grad workshop brings together scholars examining the complex relationship between media\, digital platforms\, and political expression.\n\n\nJoin us for another graduate student workshop\, Paradoxical Media: Freedom of Speech and Electoral Politics. This workshop brings together scholars examining the complex relationship between media\, digital platforms\, and political expression. It delves into how modern media technologies affect freedom of expression\, public discourse\, and electoral processes. The presentations provide critical insights into the paradoxes of media-driven democratization\, particularly through social media and artificial intelligence\, which both expand and limit the public’s engagement with democratic ideals. \n**Papers will be sent immediately after registration. \nPresenter Bios: \nB. Tyler Leigh: B. Tyler Leigh is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Rooney Center for the Study of American Democracy at the University of Notre Dame. Leigh’s research focuses on how media lead the American public to behave in (anti-) democratic ways. He is currently completing a joint PhD in Political Science and Communication from the University of Pennsylvania. \nBizaa Zeynab Ali: Bizaa Zeynab Ali is a doctoral fellow at New York University and The New School for Social Research in New York. Her research focuses on the sociology of digital cultures and platforms\, media industries\, global media ethics and creator cultures on social media. \nPaper Abstracts: \nThe Broken Promise of Free Expression: How Social Media Undermines Public Support for Freedom of ExpressionBy B. Tyler Leigh \nSocial media has democratized expression by giving anyone with an account the ability toexpress nearly any idea into the public sphere. One might expect that Americans would become more supportive of democratic expression as they gain experience and familiarity with it through social media. Using an observational study and two experiments\, I show the opposite is occurring. Social media democratized expression but does not deliver on the promised outcomes that free expression is supposed to provide. As a result\, conspiracy theories\, misinformation\, and hate speech seem more influential than ever before. I show that\, as a result\, people are less willing to allow the exact same expressive acts on social media than in-person. Further\, people are less supportive of free expression overall when primed to think about the democratization of expression social media represents. These findings indicate that social media is undermining public support for freedom of expression. \nComputational Creativity\, Political AI and Artistic Activism in Pakistan: Reflections on the Limits and Possibilities of Generative AI for Contemporary Electoral PoliticsBy Bizaa Zeynab Ali \nThis research will highlight the ways in which Generative AI tools facilitated political mobilization during the 2024 elections in Pakistan. I analyze the paradoxical ways in which generative AI was used to propagate disinformation\, while presenting digital citizens with an opportunity to counter and subvert state led narratives in innovative ways\, by visibilizing violence against women\, fact-checking fake news and deliberate disinformation campaigns\, invoking civic dissent through political satire and developing an extensive electoral campaign with AI tools. The research showcases examples of computational creativity and artistic activism during recent political unrest in Pakistan\, broadly organized in three categories to underline public engagement with AI technology regarding concerns about disinformation\, electoral manipulation and state violence. I highlight the creative use of AI tools like chatbots\, generative art and voice generators for digital dissent and large-scale political marketing in short periods of time\, under the threat of state censorship\, internet shutdowns and social media crackdowns.
