SUMMARY:Paradoxical Media: Freedom of Speech and Electoral Politics
DESCRIPTION:This grad workshop brings together scholars examining the complex relationship between media\, digital platforms\, and political expression.\n\n\nJoin us for another graduate student workshop\, Paradoxical Media: Freedom of Speech and Electoral Politics. This workshop brings together scholars examining the complex relationship between media\, digital platforms\, and political expression. It delves into how modern media technologies affect freedom of expression\, public discourse\, and electoral processes. The presentations provide critical insights into the paradoxes of media-driven democratization\, particularly through social media and artificial intelligence\, which both expand and limit the public’s engagement with democratic ideals. \n**Papers will be sent immediately after registration. \nPresenter Bios: \nB. Tyler Leigh: B. Tyler Leigh is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Rooney Center for the Study of American Democracy at the University of Notre Dame. Leigh’s research focuses on how media lead the American public to behave in (anti-) democratic ways. He is currently completing a joint PhD in Political Science and Communication from the University of Pennsylvania. \nBizaa Zeynab Ali: Bizaa Zeynab Ali is a doctoral fellow at New York University and The New School for Social Research in New York. Her research focuses on the sociology of digital cultures and platforms\, media industries\, global media ethics and creator cultures on social media. \nPaper Abstracts: \nThe Broken Promise of Free Expression: How Social Media Undermines Public Support for Freedom of ExpressionBy B. Tyler Leigh \nSocial media has democratized expression by giving anyone with an account the ability toexpress nearly any idea into the public sphere. One might expect that Americans would become more supportive of democratic expression as they gain experience and familiarity with it through social media. Using an observational study and two experiments\, I show the opposite is occurring. Social media democratized expression but does not deliver on the promised outcomes that free expression is supposed to provide. As a result\, conspiracy theories\, misinformation\, and hate speech seem more influential than ever before. I show that\, as a result\, people are less willing to allow the exact same expressive acts on social media than in-person. Further\, people are less supportive of free expression overall when primed to think about the democratization of expression social media represents. These findings indicate that social media is undermining public support for freedom of expression. \nComputational Creativity\, Political AI and Artistic Activism in Pakistan: Reflections on the Limits and Possibilities of Generative AI for Contemporary Electoral PoliticsBy Bizaa Zeynab Ali \nThis research will highlight the ways in which Generative AI tools facilitated political mobilization during the 2024 elections in Pakistan. I analyze the paradoxical ways in which generative AI was used to propagate disinformation\, while presenting digital citizens with an opportunity to counter and subvert state led narratives in innovative ways\, by visibilizing violence against women\, fact-checking fake news and deliberate disinformation campaigns\, invoking civic dissent through political satire and developing an extensive electoral campaign with AI tools. The research showcases examples of computational creativity and artistic activism during recent political unrest in Pakistan\, broadly organized in three categories to underline public engagement with AI technology regarding concerns about disinformation\, electoral manipulation and state violence. I highlight the creative use of AI tools like chatbots\, generative art and voice generators for digital dissent and large-scale political marketing in short periods of time\, under the threat of state censorship\, internet shutdowns and social media crackdowns.

SUMMARY:Ecological Arboriculture: Section B
DESCRIPTION:Develop a deeper connection to trees by understanding their outsized role in our natural ecosystems. Trees provide habitat and food. They support nutrient-cycling in forest systems through leaf-drop and decomposition\, mediate temperatures\, mitigate stormwater\, and soil erosion\, and are culturally significant to the mid-Atlantic region. Examine the ecological features of trees while learning about their anatomy and care. Find out how trees contribute\, in both life and death\, to forest ecology. Learn why large\, mature trees need to be conserved and how climate change could impact forests in the future. Outdoor learning conducted to complement the lectures. Dress for the weather. These classes are rain or shine.\nThis program takes place in person at Mt. Cuba Center Three Wednesdays: 10/30 through 11/13.\nAbout the Instructors:\nNicole DeLizzio is the Arborist Assistant at the Mt. Cuba Center. She holds a BS in Agriculture and Natural Resources with a minor in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation from the University of Delaware. Nicole is an ISA certified arborist. In addition to co-teaching the Ecological Arboriculture course with the rest of the arboriculture team\, she can be found sharing her combined passion for trees and art in pyrography\, or the art of woodburning. One of Nicole’s favorite ecological gardening concepts is to allow trees to decay in place\, when it is safe to do so\, to be utilized by wildlife.\nScott Kelley is the Head Arborist at Mt Cuba Center. He is an International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist. Scott has been working with trees since 1980\, and he joined Mt Cuba Center in 1986.\nWilliam Trescott is the Arboriculture Manager at Mt. Cuba Center. He joined the staff fulltime in 1988 and began his arboricultural career as a tree climber in 1989. William is an International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist. In addition to daily tree care duties\, he is currently involved in Mt. Cuba Center’s tree canopy replacement project and development of best practices for ecological arboriculture.

SUMMARY:Uncle Bobbie's X Mike Africa Jr. - On A Move
DESCRIPTION:Join Uncle Bobbie’s as we welcome activist and writer\, Mike Africa Jr. to discuss his book\, “On A Move”\n\n\nMay 13\, 1985 – a city bombed it’s own people. \nJoin us for an important discussion with with activist and writer whose family was targeted in the MOVE bombings\, Mike Africa Jr. Mike is the author of\, On A Move: Philadelphia’s Notorious Bombing and a Native Son’s Lifelong Battle for Justice. \nHe will be in conversation with our own Marc Lamont Hill to discuss the book\, and his incredible journey since the bombing almost 40 years ago. You do not want to miss this important event. \nA community Q&A will follow the discussion. \nIn addition\, all copies of On A Move will be signed. \nMake sure you’re a part of this one. \n****** \nAbout the book: \nThe incredible story of MOVE\, the revolutionary Black civil liberties group that Philadelphia police bombed in 1985\, killing 11 civilians—by one of the few people born into the organization\, raised during the bombing’s tumultuous aftermath\, and entrusted with repairing what was left of his family. \nOn a Move is one of the most unimaginable stories of injustice and resilience in recent American history. But it is not only one of tragedy. It is about coming-of-age for a young activist\, the strong ties of family\, and\, against all odds\, learning how to take indignities on the chin and to work within the very system that created them. At once a harrowing personal account and an impassioned examination of racism and police violence\, On a Move testifies to the power of love and hope\, in the face of astonishing wrongdoing. \nAbout the author: \nMike Africa Jr. is a sought-after speaker and writer who has been featured in The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, The Guardian and on NPR. He starred in the HBO documentary 40 Years a Prisoner and was featured in the Audible original docu-series about the MOVE bombing\, Summer of ’85\, produced by Kevin Hart and Charlamagne tha God\, and narrated by Hart. As a keynote speaker\, Mike has been invited to speak everywhere from the Smithsonian and the University of Pennsylvania to the 55 Year Anniversary of the Black Panther Party. \n… \nDoors open at 6:00pm. \nBuy your book now and save on the General Admission fee! \nAll tickets are non-refundable. \nStreet parking available. Wheelchair accessible entrance also available through the rear parking lot. \nChildren older than 5-years old need a ticket for entry.

See you there! \n\n\n\n\nMore about Black Lotus HHC \n \nBlack Lotus Holistic Healing Collective is known for is a space designed for BIPOC healers/practitioners to be centered in the healing in order for them to heal those in the BIPOC community. Vibrational healing is the ancient art of healing with sound; it traces back to ancient Egypt & Tibet. Sound vibrations can heal the physical body at a cellular level by adjusting blockages and imbalances. These imbalances can cause the body to have a slower frequency vibration which may lead to dis-ease or illnesses. Natural healing sound frequencies can be transferred or introduced externally or directly into the body to create a more harmonious state. \nAt Black Lotus\, we combine the use of crystal chakra singing bowls\, gongs\, tuning forks\, and more to give a relaxing & transformative experience. We can balance chakras\, repair auras\, uplift the mood or help with grounding. Vibrational healing is a great tool for meditation\, alleviating stress\, and relaxing stiff or sore muscles. \nFor more visit: www.diasporaeducationalservices.org/black-lotus \nhttps://linktr.ee/blacklotushhc \n\n\n\nDIRECTIONS: \n \nBlack Lotus is not on Lincoln Drive despite the address…it is actually on Rittenhousetown Lane.
