SUMMARY:Community Paint Day with the Tacony CDC and Mat Tomeszko
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday March 23rd from 1:00pm-3:00pm for a Community Paint Day\n\n\nStill Life is a genre of art that typically depicts ordinary objects from everyday life. It is deceptive in its simplicity\, because by recording these objects in paint\, over time it becomes a record of history\, and speaks volumes about individuals and a community. \n \nThe Tacony Community Development Corporation is working with artist Mat Tomeszko to create a community Still Life Project inspired by the stories of Tacony. This Spring\, we’ve been collecting stories about the neighborhood and what it means to Tacony’s residents and visitors. These stories will be turned into series of temporarily installed murals at multiple locations along Torresdale Avenue\, with three large\, central compositions containing all the objects from our stories in a classical arrangement\, as well as several small\, individual objects installed throughout the community. \nThis event is the first of a series of Community Paint sessions\, to be hosted at the Tacony LAB Community Arts Center (6918 Torresdale) on March 23rd from 1-3 PM. Join us to contribute to this Still Life Project and to make your mark on the Tacony neighborhood! \nRegistration is not required.

SUMMARY:A World of Discovery with Science and Heart (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Much has been written about gardening for human senses\, but how do plants and animals perceive the world around them? What do we miss when we landscape for human visual appeal but neglect the sensory experiences of our wild neighbors? Noise\, light and odor pollution can have many unintended consequences. Our Houseplant Manager will share tips and tricks that she has learned working with houseplants in The Garden Shop at Jenkins and in her own home. \n▶Each participant can bring up to three plants. \n▶Plants should be in a two-gallon pot or smaller. \n▶Plants must be healthy—this is not a pest and/or disease diagnostic workshop. \n▶Participants need to be able to carry their own plants to and from the clinic and be ready to get their hands dirty. \n▶In most cases\, the containers plants arrive in will work fine; however\, participants will need to supply a larger container if plants require one. \nMembers: $30 | Non-Members: $40

SUMMARY:The Troubled History of Alternative Medicine
DESCRIPTION:Shireen Hamza examines the incorporation of non-Western medicine into biomedical institutions in the United States.\n\n\nThe incorporation of elements of non-Western medicine by biomedical institutions in the United States has been called complementary\, integrative\, or “alternative” medicine. But to offer acupuncture\, yoga\, or herbal medicine within a biomedical clinic is a radically different context from those in which these therapeutic practices were first developed. \nIn this lecture\, Shireen Hamza will explore the long histories of these traditions\, their transformation through colonialism\, and the plural approach of several “people’s medicine” initiatives\, including the Black Panthers. The history and philosophy of science can help us understand the epistemological and political choices behind the inclusion of certain practices\, and not others\, within “alternative” or “integrative” medicine today. \n \nAbout the speaker\nShireen Hamza’s dissertation project is a reassessment of the concept of “Islamic medicine” by studying this scholarly medical tradition\, ṭibb\, across the Indian Ocean World. Working on texts of both Galenic and Ayurvedic medicine composed in Arabic and Persian between the 13th and 15th centuries\, she shows the coexistence of and exchange between multiple traditions of healing. Focusing on medicine at medieval courts\, madrasas\, and port cities in Yemen and Gujarat\, she traces the circulation and transformation of disease categories and medicinal substances. Her work has been supported by the Social Science Research Council and the Fulbright Commission. \nAs part of her secondary field in critical media practice\, she explores questions of gender and historical memory with contemporary practitioners of Unani medicine in India. She is a managing editor for the Ottoman History Podcast\, and wrote and produced Ventricles\, a podcast on science outside the West. \n\n\nAbout the series\nOur Science and Society speaker series explores the history of science embedded in our everyday lives. We invite scientists\, historians\, policymakers\, and educators for engaging\, in-depth conversations that expand our perspectives. Program formats include lectures\, interviews\, roundtables\, and book launches. Science and Society events are curated for an adult audience\, fostering curiosity\, conversation\, and interactivity. Each evening concludes with a free reception with the speakers. \n\n\nFeatured image from Medicinal Plants: An Illustrated and Descriptive Guide to Plants Indigenous to and Naturalized in the United States\, Volume I\, by Charles Frederick Millspaugh\, 1892.
