SUMMARY:The Hype About Hydrogen - A Book Event with Dr. Joseph Romm
DESCRIPTION:Join PCSSM in hosting Dr. Romm to talk about his new book!\n\n\nPlease join the Penn Center for Science\, Sustainability and the Media (PCSSM) in hosting PCSSM Senior Research Fellow Dr. Joseph Romm for a book talk and event on his upcoming book “The Hype About Hydrogen: False Promises and Real Solutions in the Race to Save the Climate” which critically examines hydrogen and other “false promises” as well as the real climate solutions that can be scaled up now. It is a complete revision and update to his 2004 book. He presents a compelling analysis of the risks and inefficiencies of hydrogen\, fusion\, e-fuels\, and small nuclear reactors—warning that misallocated investments in these technologies could exceed $1 trillion by 2040. \nRomm was Acting Assistant Secretary of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy in the 1990s\, overseeing a $1 billion budget on climate solutions. He holds an MIT physics PhD\, has authored 11 books\, and is a Senior Research Fellow at the UPenn Center for Science\, Sustainability\, and the Media where he researches climate solutions. In 2009\, Rolling Stone named him one of 100 “People Who Are Reinventing America” and Time named him “The Web’s most influential climate-change blogger.” Nobel-prize-winning economist Paul Krugman said\, “I have learned a lot of what I know about energy economics from Joe Romm.” \nWith decades of expertise\, Romm delivers well-researched and thought-provoking insights that are essential to the climate conversation. We hope you can join us for this engaging discussion! \nPCSSM Director Dr. Michael Mann will introduce Dr. Romm and the event. \nThis event will be in person and books will be available for purchase and signing at the end of the event. Beverages and snacks will be available for event attendees. \n\nDate: April 17\, 2025 \nTime: 4-5pm \nLocation: The Agora Room (1st Floor)\, Annenberg Public Policy Center\, 202 S 36th Street\, Philadelphia\, PA 19104 \n \nPlease note that while this event is organized by PCSSM\, the views\, opinions\, and statements are that of the speaker and do not necessarily reflect the views of PCSSM. PCSSM aims to promote varied viewpoints in fostering productive conversations in the climate and energy space.

SUMMARY:Human Rights and Migration: Solutions for A World on the Move
DESCRIPTION:Amy Pope\, Director General of the International Organization for Migration\, will discuss more efficient migration systems.\n\n\nToday the world is experiencing unprecedented levels of displacement\, driven by conflict\, economic instability and the impacts of climate change. These challenges have brought about a rising amount of irregular and often dangerous migration\, exacerbating the increasingly divisive political debate around migrants and migration. \nMigration\, however\, is a permanent reality and a key driver of growth and innovation. Join IOM Director General Amy Pope for a discussion about how safe\, orderly\, and more efficient migration systems help create well-managed borders\, reduce irregular migration and promote shared prosperity. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is the world’s leading intergovernmental organization in the field of migration\, committed to the principle that safe and orderly migration benefits migrants\, governments\, and society. \n \nSpeakers\nAmy Pope became Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) on 1 October 2023\, bringing a wealth of experience in addressing complex migration issues and passion for changing the global narrative about people on the move. She is the first woman to hold the post in IOM’s 73-year history. Before joining IOM\, D.G. Pope served as the senior advisor on migration to U.S. President Joe Biden and served as the deputy homeland security advisor to President Barack Obama. While at the White House\, Ms. Pope developed and implemented comprehensive strategies to address migration in areas such as countering trafficking in persons\, resettling refugees\, and vulnerable people\, and preparing communities to respond and adapt to climate-related crises. Ms. Pope has also occupied positions at the U.S. Department of Justice and U.S. Senate and was a partner in the London-based law firm\, Schillings. She graduated magna cum laude from the Duke University School of Law with a JD and has a BA in political science (with honors) from Haverford College in Pennsylvania.

SUMMARY:Historical Society of Pennsylvania presents Gallery Talk with 1838 Black Metropolis
DESCRIPTION:Join the curators of Free\, As One: Black Worldmaking in the Pennsylvania Abolition Society Papers\, and 1838 Black Metropolis co-founders Morgan Lloyd and Michiko Quinones for an in-depth look at some of the compelling stories from the Historical Society of Pennsylvania (HSP) archives. HSP’s newest exhibit highlights themes of Black self-determination and leadership from the 1770s onward in the abolition movement of the Mid-Atlantic region. Drawing from the Pennsylvania Abolition Society (PAS) collection and commemorating the 250th anniversary of its founding\, the exhibit refocuses attention on abolition as a global Black-led political movement championed by the PAS. Through an assembly of primary source documents\, dive deeper into the family\, community\, and freedom for future generations that were key drivers for Black abolitionists in the Philadelphia area and beyond. Morgan and Quinones guide visitors through history during this free public event.
