SUMMARY:Arbor Day Tree Planting
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Arbor Day with the Arboretum!\n\n\nThe Arboretum has a longstanding tradition of planting trees on Arbor Day. First observed at Haverford on April 4\, 1902\, representatives of the Pennsylvania Forestry Association came out to the campus to celebrate the holiday. It became such a popular celebration that in the early 1900s a song was arranged by J. H. Redfield\, Class of 1899\, and published by Hums and Noble. Over the years\, the Arboretum has planted hundreds of trees in honor of this special day. \nThis year Luke Hamilton will be our guest speaker. Luke is a preserve manager with Natural Lands Trust\, an Arboretum member\, and a member of the Arboretum’s Advisory Committee. We will be planting a Emerald Spire® flowering crabapple on the south side of the Morris Infirmary. Members of Haverford College Arboretum will be able to take home their membership perk of a dividend plant during this event. Parking for off-campus community members can be found in the visitor parking lot.

She created and directs the DAACS Summer Institute\, the first of its kind program for training scholars in material culture identification\, analysis \, and data collection. She has active fieldwork collaborations in Jamaica and has led fieldwork in Nevis\, St. Kitts\, Virginia\, and Tennessee. SUMMARY:Old City Untapped
DESCRIPTION:This month\, step into the past at A Man Full of Trouble Tavern for an evening of drinks and discussion.\n\n\nJoin us for Old City Untapped\, a free gathering where history and hops come together! This month\, step into the past at A Man Full of Trouble Tavern for an evening of drinks and discussion. This is a free event open to the public but please RSVP so we have an idea of how many to expect. The only way to guarantee a seat is to arrive early! \nHistorical romance author Rose Lerner shares her research into Jewish social\, legal\, and political life around the time of the American Revolution. Pennsylvania’s Quaker founding offered Jews a kind of civic equality that was unavailable to them in Europe. Rose will shine a spotlight on the tumultuous career of Philadelphia-born Lt. Colonel David Salisbury Franks\, who served under Benedict Arnold at West Point\, George Washington at Valley Forge\, and diplomats Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson in Europe. He later returned home to Philadelphia to work in Alexander Hamilton’s national bank\, until his early death in the yellow fever epidemic. \n📍 A Man Full of Trouble Tavern🎟 FREE📅 April 24 at 5:00pm \nRaise a glass to history—because in Philly\, the past is always on tap! 🍻

SUMMARY:Mindful Birding Walk: Scott Arboretum at Swarthmore College
DESCRIPTION:Combining nature\, mindfulness\, and community engagement is such a powerful way to connect people to the environment.\n\n\nJoin us in this collaborative effort with Wild Birds Unlimited in Glen Mills\, Holly Merker (co-author of the book “Ornitherapy”\, A Mindful Birding and Forest Bathing Guide\, and Co-host of the Mindful Birding PodcastMindful Birding Network\, Founder & Member)\, and Scott Arboretum at Swarthmore College. (We will meet at the entrance of the Arboretum. Look for the sign). \nMindful Birding pairs observing birds with mindfulness techniques\, creating a practice that cultivates a heightened awareness and fosters connections. Labeling or identifying birds is not the primary focus\, but instead the intention is slowing down and noticing\, using birds as our guides. \nThrough guided instruction\, we’ll practice simple mindfulness exercises to engage our sensory awareness while intentionally tuning into the birds surrounding us. Techniques and prompts will accompany the gently guided walk\, which can enhance our observation skills\, deepening our experiences with wild birds around us. This in turn amplifies the positive benefits birds provide to our overall wellness. Participants will receive a take-home journal to foster observation and awareness\, and provide take-away techniques. \nAccessibility information: This program has been developed for most all mobility levels. This will be a slow-paced walk on wide and flat unpaved trails\, where we might sit and sometimes stand\, for short periods of time as we observe birds. “ \nPhoto of Northern Parula and apple blossoms attached. SUMMARY:Provisions | A Virtual Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Attend this virtual session to discuss the exhibit Provisions with artist Rainey Tildale ’94 and poet Charlotte Boulay\n\n\nProvisions is a collaboration between artist Rainey Tisdale ’94 and poet Charlotte Boulay (HC staff)\, which will be on display at the Entrance Ramp Gallery of Lutnick Library from April 1 – June 2\, 2025. Join us for a behind-the-scenes discussion on the making of the exhibit with Rainey and Charlotte. \nProvisions invites the Haverford community to experience poetry as tangible nourishment that girds us for the work of being human. The exhibit showcases Rainey’s “poem preserves”—buckeyes inscribed with carefully selected poems\, nestled in glass jars like summer produce put by for winter. Opening during National Poetry Month\, with poems curated by Charlotte and Rainey\, Provisions offers words to sustain us on seeds that grow toward light. A number of the poems were written or contributed by Fords\, and at least one buckeye in every jar is from the Haverford Arboretum. The jars line the library’s Entrance Ramp Gallery shelves like a community larder\, where we can reach for exactly the words we need when winter settles into our bones\, when we forget how many ways there are to be alive and tender together in this beautiful\, troubled world. \nThe event link will be emailed to participants in the confirmation email generated from program registration.

SUMMARY:The reimagining of the oldest building on Broad Street
DESCRIPTION:Lindsey Scannapieco will discuss the approach and ethos in reimagining the iconic buildings at Broad and Pine.\n\n\nThis presentation by Lindsey Scannapieco\, the Founder of Scout\, will focus on the approach and ethos in reimagining the iconic buildings at Broad and Pine\, where Strickland\, Furness\, and Haviland left their influence. Since 1892\, these spaces have nurtured artists\, makers\, and educators — giving rise to institutions like the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Now\, we have the opportunity to build on that foundation\, transforming these interconnected buildings into a dynamic ecosystem of studios\, small businesses\, non-profits\, and artist residences—an open-ended\, ever-evolving place of exchange. Informed by experience executing incremental development and a vision of reanimating these spaces with meaning and possibility\, we are hoping to not merely preserve the architecture; but also seek to restore the conditions for creativity and community to grow. \nPhoto Credit: Michael Bixler \n \nThis event will be held at the Center for Design Philadelphia. \nLight refreshments will be served. \n \nFor more information\, click HERE!
